There was a clock on the wall of our classroom. It wasn’t special—just a white face with black numbers. For three years, I never 1 it. It was simply there, like the desks or the chalkboard.
Then came ninth grade, the year of the high school entrance exam. 2 , everything felt different. The lessons got harder. The days got longer. And the 3 ? It started to catch my eye slowly. During maths tests, when my mind went blank (空白的), I’d look up at it. Its hands kept moving—neither faster nor slower. It never rushed. It never stopped. It just did what it was 4 to do, day after day.
One afternoon, I had to stay after school to finish some exercises. With the classroom empty, the clock tick sounded 5 . I stared at it, and for the first time, I really thought about it. This clock had been hanging here for years, watching thousands of students come and go. It watched us laugh, try, fail, and try again. And through it all, it just kept telling time, 6 no one was watching and praising. That was simply its job.
I remembered my mother’s words: “The 7 thing isn’t doing something big. It’s doing the small thing, every single day, without anyone 8 . ” Maybe that was it.
Feeling a little 9 , I turned back to my desk and opened my textbook. There was still a lot to do. But somehow, I felt like I had all the 10 I needed. Not because the clock would stop-it wouldn’t. It would keep going, and so would I.

Teenagers often go online when they are bored, but they find it can sometimes bring more anxiety (焦虑). That’s when the “Boredom Buster” comes to help. It offers advice on keeping busy depending on how you feel.
The Boredom Buster is a part of an app called Saplings. It was made to help teenagers deal with a restless mind. Created in 2021 by 16-year-old Vaishnavi Kumbala from the US, the app was born out of her worry for people of her age with mental (精神的) health problems.
“A lot of mental health resources out there are for adults or younger kids,” Kumbala told The Washington Post. She saw many teenagers feel lonely and sad. Some of them are too shy to reach out for help.
While it can’t take the place of doctors, the app can work together with their help.
“The prompts (提醒) in the guided diary are made just for teens,” Kumbala said.
Prompts include questions like “What are the simple things in your life that you shouldn’t take for granted (想当然)?” and “What is your greatest interest? How can you use it in your life every day in a small way?” There are also encouraging sayings, including “Stay hungry, stay foolish”.
“I wanted to create something that was by a teen for teens,” Kumbala said. Her app won the 2021 Congressional App Challenge in Louisiana’s First District. The purpose of the competition is to help middle and high school students explore computer science.

Why is the sea salty? Long before we discovered scientific ways of thinking about it, we explained it in a story. Even though the answer isn’t scientific, it holds some other truth in it — especially about the human heart.
Long ago, a poor old couple lived on the coast. One day, an old storyteller came to their village. The old couple gave him a meal. In return, he gave them a coffee mill(磨粉机) and said, “Say, ‘Mill, please grind(磨粉)’, and it’ll make whatever you want, to stop it, say ‘Mill, please cease(停止) grinding’.”
Soon the old couple had a much better life. They’d been happy people, and they didn’t need much more. But the young couple next door were never satisfied. When they saw the old couple wearing good clothes and buying good food, they burnt with envy(羡慕). So one day, the young husband went to the old couple’s house secretly and heard, “Mill, please grind hot chocolate!” He was surprised to see it coming out.
Then the young couple stole the mill from the old couple. With it, they rode a horse and set off down the coast, where no one would know them. Along the way, the husband showed proudly and asked, “What do you want it to make?” “Oh. I don’t know. Why not salt?” the wife said. “Mill, please grind salt!” he said. “It works!” the wife shouted. But then they noticed the salt went everywhere. “Make it stop,” the wife said. But the husband didn’t know how. “Mill, please stop grinding! Please, no more!” His words didn’t work. The mill kept grinding. Finally, the young husband threw the mill into the sea as far as he could.
And there it’s been, for hundreds of years, endlessly grinding salt. That’s why the sea is salt.
18.What is the passage?

19.What is the right order of the following facts from the passage?
①It began to produce salt. ②The young husband threw it.

C.④→①→③→② D.④→③→①→②
20.Look at the mind map.Which of the following can be put in the __△__?
A.thankful; stop the mill B.proud; make the mill work
C.nervous; ride a horse D.surprised; throw the mill
21.What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A.A shared joy is a double joy. B.With age come wisdom.
C.Greed breaks the bag. D.No pains, no gains.

Toad is very unhappy in prison.
“This is the end!” he says. “It is the end of Toad. Popular, handsome Toad. Rich, clever Toad. I am a stupid animal,” he says. “And I miss my friends Badger, Rat and Mole!”
Toad cries and cries in his cell (牢房) for weeks. He does not eat.
But the prison guard has a daughter. She helps her father in the prison. She loves animals and she is sad when Toad cries. One day she asks her father, “Father! Toad is very unhappy. He’s thin, because he does not eat. Can I visit him?”
“Okay,” replies her father. He doesn’t like Toad. So the guard’s daughter visits Toad and takes him some dinner.
“Now, cheer up, Toad,” she says. “Stop crying and eat some dinner.”
Toad smells the food. It smells good. But he lies on the floor, and cries and kicks.
At last Toad stops crying and eats the dinner. It is delicious. Then he tells the guard’s daughter about Toad Hall and his adventures with the caravan, and his friends, Rat, Mole and Badger.
“Toad Hall sounds beautiful,” she says.
Toad tells the girl about the gardens and the big rooms at Toad Hall. When she leaves, Toad is happy again. He sings a little song,(Toad likes singing songs) and sleeps well.
The girl likes Toad. She visits him every day.
“Poor Toad!” she says. “In prison for twenty years! Because of a car!”
One day she thinks of a plan to help Toad.
“Listen, Toad,” says the girl. “I have a plan. My aunt is a washerwoman, she does the washing for the prisoners here. She comes to the prison on Monday, and returns with clean clothes on Friday. Today is Thursday. You are rich. If you give my aunt some money, you can have her dress and bonnet (女帽).”
“Me? In a dress and bonnet?!” laughs Toad.
“Wear her dress and bonnet. Then you can get away from the prison, disguised (伪装) as the washerwoman.”
“Oh, no!” says Toad. “Toad of Toad Hall, disguised as a washerwoman? I don’t think so!”
“Then Toad of Toad Hall can stay here in prison,” replies the girl.
Toad is silent. Then he says, “You are a kind, clever girl, and I am a stupid toad. Please tell your aunt to come and visit me.”

Putting things off is something a lot of students are troubled with. Between schoolwork, after school activities and everyday worries, there are too many things you have to deal with every day. 26 You might start falling behind and your grades might get lower.
One smart way to fight back is to break big tasks into tiny pieces. Huge projects can feel like a mountain. But if you cut them into smaller steps, it will make it less scary. Procrastination (拖延) can make you feel overwhelmed (被淹没) by all the tasks. For example, you’ve got to write a five-page paper. Just tell yourself, “Today, I’ll choose my topic and write a little. I’ll take care of more tomorrow.” 27
The “work and rest” way is also a smart choice for being productive. Set a timer for 25 minutes—go all in, full attention. 28 Have some cookies. Walk around. Once you get going, it’s easier to keep it up.
Also, stay away from what pulls your attention. 29 Find a quiet place where you won’t get interrupted (打扰) at all. The less noise, the better your brain can lock in.
30 For example, listen to your favorite song, or watch an interesting TV program.
These little things keep you going. Change doesn’t happen overnight, so stick to it every day. Finally, you are sure to see the payoff.
A.Step by step, it gets done.
B.Then take a five-minute break.
C.And don’t forget to treat yourself.
D.Put away your MP3 player and any kind of toy.
E.But if you keep putting them off, they can snowball.
F.You should always ask for help when you can’t finish tasks on time.
G.Sometimes, procrastination can make you feel stressed and worried.

The topic of China’s “slash youths (斜杠青年)” has been hot on social media for some time, drawing attention to the different pursuits (追求) of the young people nowadays.
The “slash youths” refers to those who have more than one personal identity (身份). They like to show or describe themselves with different identities, such as a nurse and a model, a teacher and an excellent singer, or an engineer and band player. Li Lan is one of them. She mainly works as a tour guide, and she is also known as a great designer who created many great book covers. She gives up her comfortable life because she wants to pursue more meaningful achievements.
A different job can make them get new experiences and talents. What’s more, when accepted by others, they can have a sense of satisfaction.
A study on “slash youths” in the China Youth Research magazine talks about the background of this phenomenon (现象). From the point of social development, changeable job markets have appeared because the modern society’s usual organization is partly broken. As for young people themselves, when they try to redefine the meaning of work, they face the difficulty of self-development, like feeling powerless, worthless in the job, and so on.
Clearly, the appearance of the slash life leads to some changes. “The slash life shows that our society is changing for the better in some ways, and it welcomes everyone’s self-development,” said Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to depend on work and money for their sense of self-development. They would like to create their own identities.” The researcher added that because people have different interests and are willing to pay for these interests nowadays, the slash life of the youth would drive the growth of a new economy (经济) and its development.
54.Why does Li Lan give up her comfortable life?
55.In the passage, what is the background of the “slash youths” phenomenon?
56.What will be your identities if you are encouraged to be one of the “slash youths” in the future? Why?

1.C 2.D 3.B 4.A 5.C 6.A 7.C 8.B 9.D 10.A
be supposed to do sth.

第二个△对应“excited”的节点,是磨粉机开始磨盐,即make the mill work时的状态。

Today is Thursday. You are rich. If you give my aunt some money, you can have her dress and bonnet (女帽).”
“Me? In a dress and bonnet?!” laughs Toad.
“Wear her dress and bonnet. Then you can get away from the prison, disguised (伪装) as the washerwoman.”

B“Then take a five-minute break.”
D“Put away your MP3 player and any kind of toy.”
C“And don’t forget to treat yourself.”中的“treat yourself”与后文的“listen to your favorite song, or watch an interesting TV program”形成总分关系,是本段的主题句。

I’m sorry to hear that. It’s really easy to lose ourselves in short videos. They are highly entertaining, but spending too much time on them will not only make our grades drop but also hurt our eyes and waste precious time.
As for me, I use my smartphone wisely. I only check my phone for necessary information during breaks and never scroll through videos for hours. I prefer reading books or doing sports in my free time, which makes me healthier and more energetic.
To help you, I have some practical advice. First, set a strict time limit for using your phone, like only 30 minutes a day.
