A I'm ashamed to say that as the years have gone by, I haven't taken the time to walk around my neighborhood. Sure.I'm out and about all the time but always in the car to my way out of the neighborhood. The main reason is that I don't love my neighborhood anymore.I'm referring to the place, not the people. My street used to come to an end in a forest. We would walk the dogs in the forest that always had nice, seasonal flowers and shrubs (灌木) coming up all year round. Now it's gone and been replaced by a forest of high-rise buildings. Pretty down because of some annoying office work these days, I decided I just had to get out and walk today. It started at the building “forest”. I still felt pain in my heart from the sight and I missed those days of walking the dog and taking in the beauty of the trees, shrubs and flowers. As I continued on, though, I came across this. Some very artistic children created some lovely, colorful artwork and I couldn't help but think they must have been trying to make me and everyone else just feel better. It certainly worked on me. Thank you, thoughtful artists! At one point, I saw a man walking across one of the wider, busier streets. I shouted, “I just wanted to say hi to someone!” He answered, looking very friendly and happy, smiling and waving. As I walked near the last couple of streets of my walk, the winds began to blow. There were dark clouds behind me so I decided to head home. Luckily, the rain didn't come down until I was resting on the sofa. I was glad I went out. 1.Why did the author seldom walk around his neighborhood? A.He was a homebody. B.He didn't like the environment anymore. C.He was too busy with his work. D.He didn't get along with the people. 2.How did the author feel at the start of his walk? A.Surprised. B.Angry. C.Lonely. D.Sad. 根据第三段中的“It started ...shrubs and flowers.” 3.What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 5 refer to? A.Creating artwork. B.Meeting famous artists. C.What the children did. D.How to cheer people up. 根据第五段中的“Some very ...worked on me.” 4.What happened during the author's walk? A.He made a neighborly connection with a stranger. B.He was caught in the rain suddenly. C.He received children's artwork as a gift. D.He came across an old friend. B My childhood was a painted picture of sunny sky and rolling green fields stretching to the horizon. It tasted of sharp berries and smelt of sour grapes. My family lived in a cabin (小木屋) in the countryside but I lived in my mother's arms. They were so delicate but strong, her red hair falling around me like a curtain separating me from the world. Childhood was simple. The borders of my village were the furthest my troubles went and strange animals only lived in the pages of books. Every day was a waking dream of running races and muddy knees. My village was archaic,_dying cabins housing dying farmers with dying traditions. There weren't many children but me and the other boys; boys of butchers and sellers formed our own group. They called us wild. I suppose we were. Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter. Liberated from the restrictions of society, we would bound into the woods, deeper and deeper until we found a lake which, with a wild yell, we would jump into all at once. My most vivid memories from boyhood center around that lake. Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams broke into the outcry from birds. The shock of cold water against sweating skin would wake every nerve in my body and my bare feet would hit the sinking muddy bottom. As we submerged (潜入水中), time would suspend, movements slowing as bubbles rose around us. I was drowning. I was living. I was living. I was drowning. For timelessness or a second (both felt the same), we would suspend, curl up, and then be forced back out into breathing air. We should have known that it wouldn't last forever. Yet, even under the best circumstances, there's something so tragic about growing up: to have your perspective on the people and life around you change;to always struggle to reach a mirror only to find yourself tall enough to see your reflection one day, and find a different person staring back at you. 5.What does the underlined word “archaic” mean in paragraph 2? A.Borderless. B.Valueless. C.Old-fashioned. D.Poverty-stricken. 根据画线词所在句子“My village was archaic, dying cabins housing dying farmers with dying traditions.” 6.Why did the author consider himself and other children wild? A.They played in the woods crazily. B.They tricked others purposefully. C.They frequently broke social rules. D.They firmly refused school education. 根据第三段中的“Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter ...we would jump into all at once.”,可知,作者之所以认为自己和其他孩子都是野孩子,是因为他们在树林里疯狂地玩耍。 7.How does the author introduce his memories of the lake? A.By sharing feelings. B.By expressing ideas. C.By making comparisons. D.By describing characters. 根据第四段中的“Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams ...bubbles rose around us.” 8.What message does the author seem to convey in the last paragraph? A.Loneliness and challenges make a man grow up. B.The regret of growth is that you have never tried. C.Growth is often accompanied by sad goodbyes to the past. D.Growth begins when we begin to accept our own weakness. 根据最后一段“We should have known that it wouldn't last forever ... a different person staring back out at you.” In higher education, 21st-century librarians are seeing their roles changing.University library buildings are also taking a new look. However, one thing is clear:__9__ Libraries meet students' new needs digitally To support modern research, libraries will need to offer students access to the digital versions of scholarly research.Ringling College of Art and Design set out to create a library that would better provide its students with the services they actually need.__10__ Flexible workspaces __11__ Most commonly, universities are redesigning libraries to make them suitable for collaboration (合作) — meaning open, social spaces where small and large groups can gather and share materials. For example,Norwich University in Vermont decided to create more high-tech collaboration spaces in its library by designing 11 group study rooms that have movable furniture.
