At first, I didn't recognize the symptoms that we all had in common.Friends mentioned that they were having trouble concentrating. It wasn't burnout — we still had energy. It wasn't depression — we didn't feel hopeless. We just felt somewhat joyless and aimless.
It turns out that there's a name for that: languishing.
Languishing is a sense of inactivity and emptiness. It feels as if you're muddling (混淆) your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield (挡风玻璃).
In psychology, we think about mental health on a spectrum (范围) from depression to flourishing (健康幸福).Flourishing is the peak of well-being.Depression is the valley of ill-being.Languishing is the neglected middle child of mental health. It's the emptiness between depression and flourishing — the absence of well-being.You're not functioning at full capacity.Languishing dulls your motivation, disrupts your ability to focus, and greatly increases the possibility that you'll cut back on work.
Part of the danger is that when you're languishing, you might not notice the dulling of delight or the decreasing of drive. You don't catch yourself slipping slowly into aloneness; you're indifferent to your indifference. When you can't see your own suffering, you don't seek help or even do much to help yourself.
So what can we do about it? People who become more focused on their work manage to avoid languishing.Interrupted attention is an enemy of engagement and excellence. To go beyond languishing, give yourself some uninterrupted time.It clears out constant distractions (使人分心的事) and gives us the freedom to focus. And try starting with small wins by focusing on a challenge that matters to you — an interesting project, a worthwhile goal, or a meaningful conversation.
We still have a lot to learn about what causes languishing and how to cure it, but naming it might be a first step.It could help to defog our vision, giving us a clearer window into what has been an unclear experience. It could remind us that we weren't alone: languishing is common and shared.
By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of emptiness.
4.Which definition can best suit the word “languishing”?
A.Feeling exhausted and without hope.
B.Becoming weaker or failing to improve.
C.Making someone want to achieve something.
D.Going beyond the usual limits of something.
根据第一段中的“We just felt somewhat joyless and aimless”和第三段中的“Languishing is a sense of inactivity and emptiness.”
5.Which of the following can be described as languishing?
A.Seeking help when you are suffering.
B.Realizing that you are not alone in despair.
C.Giving yourself some uninterrupted time.
D.Being indifferent to your lack of enthusiasm.
6.What could psychologists do to help solve the problems of languishing?
A.Give people more freedom.
B.See it as depression.
C.Name it clearly.
D.Remove it from a spectrum.
根据倒数第二段中的“We still have a lot to learn about what causes languishing and how to cure it, but naming it might be a first step.”
7.Why is it significant to know languishing is common and shared?
A.We can let the silent despair speak up and find a way out.
B.We can continue to learn more about languishing.
C.We can see it as basically the same as depression.
D.We can study it as the complete opposite of flourishing.

Are you always looking at your mobile phone as you're walking, playing with it as you're studying, and reluctant to put it down as you go to bed? Tired of a life controlled by their mobile phones, many young people seem to be intent on working out how to overcome it.
One of the popular gadgets (装置) is the mobile phone isolation box. Users simply put their mobile phone in the box and set a time lock that will ban them from having access to the phone for a set time. Some boxes allow users to respond to emergencies. These isolation boxes can be adapted to almost all types of mobile phones on the market. The locking time generally ranges from one minute to 12 hours, and the price is generally about 100-200 yuan. One of the sellers says: “Our main customers are students and office workers. They usually ask for engraving some inspirational quotes on the box when buying. Some parents who feel their children are wasting time on social media and ruining their studies are also buying them. This physical box is much better than software on phones.” The seller's after-sales comment section is filled with positive comment from buyers who say the box has helped them become more self-disciplined.
However, Lin Tianqi, a college student says, because the lock time is set by users, whether they can achieve their goal depends on the individual. A five-hour lockup is too harsh, she says, but one of her friends locks the box for just 30 minutes, she seems to delude herself. Liang Wenyu, another college student, sneers at these “flashy” attempts. “Regardless of the effectiveness of the isolation box, you might as well lock yourself up. As simple as that.” he says. “I can understand why they need these blood pumping quotes on the box — because they lack discipline. How about simply taking back your time?Self-disciplined people are bound to succeed without such gimmicks.”
8.What can we learn about the mobile phone isolation box?
A.It adapts to all types of mobile phones.
B.It allows users to use their mobile phones for a set time.
C.It has good market prospects.
D.It helps users abandon their mobile phones.
和“The seller's after-sales ... more self-disciplined.”
9.What does the underlined word “delude” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Abandon. B.Enjoy.
C.Satisfy. D.Cheat.
10.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The lock time is a key factor for self-discipline.
B.Self-discipline is up to the person, not an isolation box.
C.Two college students' views on isolation box are unreasonable.
D.The isolation box needs improving due to its ineffectiveness.
根据最后一段中Lin Tianqi的观点“the lock time ... individual”和Liang Wenyu的观点“I can understand ... gimmicks.”
11.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Many young people attempt to stay away from mobile phones.
B.Different views on the mobile phone isolation box.
C.The mobile phone isolation box is used to help reduce mobile phone use.
D.Self-discipline is of great importance.
D
We have a strange obsession (迷恋) with the concept of perfection.Driven by our culture, we struggle for an unattainable ideal: If I had the perfect parents, perfect grades, perfect ..., then I would be happy. We seek what we can't have without remembering that we don't actually need to be perfect.Imperfection allows us to be human.
Parents, teachers and other high-achieving peers will have us believe that we must be perfect if we wish to remain competitive. However, what job or school requires you to develop a cure for some form of cancer by the age of 18? Although those grades would be admirable achievements, are they worth losing sleep over? We feel like we need the perfect grades to get into the perfect college that will provide us with the perfect education necessary to obtain the perfect job.Making use of our thirst for perfection, some college and career industries have arisen claiming to help us reach our goals.
The truth is, you only need to be good enough.Don't worry about anything secondary to your passions. You won't become an expert in anything if you spend your time trying to succeed in everything you do.You can only become an expert when you devote your time to the project that truly brings you joy.
As members of this society, we have a responsibility to be excellent in what we do, not perfect.Although perfection can be a goal, it should not be the only goal.We only have 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week. Thus, we need to prioritize (优先处理) what we want to do and cut out the activities we cannot do.
With everything, though, make sure you're doing enough.Going after your passions is not a reason to completely give up anything else.Try as hard as you can and let your future take its own course.Worry about your task at hand and you will be successful in achieving your dreams. Most of all, remember that you're going to be okay.

A.A perfect grade is worth losing sleep over.
B.The whole college and career industries are perfect.
C.Some schools ask students to invent some medicine.

根据第二段中的“Making use of our thirst for perfection, some college and career industries have arisen claiming to help us reach our goals.”
14.According to the author, we should ________.
A.worry about our future dreams
B.deal with what we hope to do first
C.set a goal to be a success in our life

15.What might be the most suitable title for the text?

My opinion on smartphone addiction among teenagers
Nowadays, young people have become more dependent on smartphones, resulting in conflicts between them and their parents sometimes. Here is my opinion on how to deal with such conflicts.
First of all, it is necessary for us to talk with our parents and set rules on how to use our phones.Once we have reached an agreement, it has to be strictly followed.Being more active and participating in more activities will also help reduce our reliance on phones.Last but not least, turn to professionals for help, if necessary.
No matter what approach we use, we have to realize that it is our parents who we should always trust and depend on in life.
Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge bunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.

With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then, my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she's the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can't wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!
