The Best Medicine
<m></m><uw>As I approach<m></m> the hospital wearing my white coat</uw>, I look just like any other doctor. That is until I put on my curly<m></m> rainbow wig<m></m>, big red nose, and add my name badge<m></m> “Doctor Larry Laugh-Out-Loud”. I walk through the doors into the waiting area, <m></m><uw>where there's a familiar atmosphere of boredom<m></m> and
11
tension</uw>. People sit uncomfortably on plastic chairs, looking through<m></m> old magazines, all of which have been read hundreds of times previously. Anxious<m></m> parents do <m></m><uw>what they can to comfort nervous and crying children</uw>.
[3]此处的what they can是what they can do的省略形式;to comfort nervous and crying children为动词不定式短语作目的状语。
13
In the middle of this particular scene I spot<m></m> a small girl <m></m><uw>whose ankle<m></m> is twice its normal size</uw>. I speak with the on-duty<m></m> nurse, who tells me that Lara's parents rushed<m></m>her to the hospital after she fell off her bicycle. Since getting here, Lara has spent her time crying in pain<m></m>. <m></m><uw>Although it's the doctors and nurses who will treat her injury, it's my job to make her feel better.</uw>
[4]此处为关系代词whose引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a small girl; twice its normal size是倍数表达法。
[5]本句中“Although...her injury”是由although引导的让步状语从句,其中“it's the doctors and nurses who will treat her injury”是强调句型,强调主语the doctors and nurses;主句中的it是形式主语,真正的主语是to make her feel better。
15
Scientific studies show that laughter produces chemicals<m></m> to make people feel better, which means clown doctors can be helpful. <m></m><uw>We are specially trained clowns who work as part of a programme known as “hospital clowning”.</uw> I chose this career because of my experience of going to hospital when I was a kid. Although the doctors and nurses did a great job<m></m>, hospitals weren't really designed for<m></m> children. I spent much of the time when I
16
was there feeling frightened and more than a little<m></m> bored! <m></m><uw>Being a clown doctor</uw> means I can help people by entertaining<m></m> them.
<m></m><uw>Visiting hospitals and other health care<m></m> facilities, we clown doctors work together with medical professionals<m></m>.</uw> On a typical day, we spend our time cheering up<m></m> patients, their families, and more often than not<m></m>, the hospital staff<m></m>, too! We do this by doing magic tricks<m></m>, singing songs, telling stories and, of course, telling silly jokes. Some children, though<m></m>, don't feel
18
like laughing<m></m>, especially if they're in pain. We have to be very sensitive<m></m> and work closely with<m></m> the doctors and nurses, who <m></m><uw>keep us updated<m></m> on each patient</uw>.
[8]本句中的“Visiting...facilities”是动词-ing形式作时间状语;we clown doctors中的clown doctors是主语we的同位语。
<m></m><uw>And my magic medicine does indeed<m></m> seem to do the trick<m></m>.</uw> While the doctor concentrates on<m>㉛</m> examining<m>㉜</m> Lara's ankle, I get her attention by doing a magic trick. Although she is clearly still in some pain, her scared<m></m> and anxious look has been replaced<m></m>—first by a small smile, and then by loud laughter as I “magically” produce<m></m> her sock from out of<m></m> my pocket.
20
Seeing their daughter so much happier has in turn made Lara's parents more relaxed<m></m>.
[10]本句中does indeed seem为“助动词do/does/did+动词原形”结构,对谓语动词进行强调,意为“的确……”。
And as for<m></m> me? Well, when I take off<m></m> my wig and my red nose, I'm still wearing a big smile<m></m>, <m></m><uw>as I remember all the fun and laughter of the day</uw>. While there might be more hospital visits ahead<m></m> for Lara and others, I hope that clown doctors help make it a friendlier place to visit. After all<m></m>, <m></m><uw>it really is true that “laughter is the best medicine”</uw>.
