The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 when Vincent van Gogh was staying at a home for the mentally ill. Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window—the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. However, he didn't just paint the clouds. He also painted the massive circles of white and yellow racing across the sky.The stars and the moon hang bright in the night sky. Beneath this amazing sky, we see a sleeping village and a dark, lonely tree.
His unusual use of colour has led experts to think that Van Gogh's mental illness may have affected his sense of sight. He also took a drug that can make people see yellow spots, just like the stars in The Starry Night.
Unfortunately, Van Gogh's unique paintings weren't very popular and he only sold one painting in his lifetime. He also thought The Starry Night was a failure. However, the fact remains that The Starry Night is now one of the world's most famous paintings.
The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893.What makes it striking is that it shows a thin figure with an expression of fear—the figure's mouth is wide open and letting out a powerful scream. The figure covers his or her ears and looks directly at the viewer. This figure is set on a bridge above a dark, stormy sea, and against a burning orangered sky.
In his diary, Munch talked about what inspired him. “I was walking down the road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly the sky turned as red as blood...I stood there shaking. Then I heard the scream of nature.”
Many experts say that The Scream is connected to Munch's mental health problems, which caused him a lot of pain.

(2025·山东六校联考)Cimabue, the greatest painter of the Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on.He patted the fly,but it did not move.He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint.Turning around,he saw that his apprentice (学徒),Giotto, was laughing.Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village.Story has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside,he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so real that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto's story began in Florence, where the young student flourished under Cimabue's instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.
At that time, people in paintings didn't look real, and the symbolism (象征主义) of art was difficult for viewers to connect with it.Innovation (创新) was not stressed, so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.
However,Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way.His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes (壁画) for the Arena Chapel.Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then,he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created threedimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times.
In addition to painting,Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties,he painted the Ognissanti Madonna, another famous work of art.He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life influenced the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.

A talented teen painter in Waterbury is helping her very sick father with her love of art. The 15yearold girl from Waterbury could become a wellknown artist one day. For now, though, part of her love for painting is the chance to help her dad, who's ill. “It's kind of like an ache—a heartbreak,” she said. “You never want to see one of your loved ones get hurt.”
Her father is suffering from typeone diabetes (糖尿病) and is having trouble affording his mounting medical bills. “I'm suffering from heart disease, and blindness from my diabetes,” her father said. Angie has decided to put her talent as an artist to good use.
On Saturday, Sept. 23 from noon to 4 p.m., she's hosting her own oneday art exhibition to sell her paintings and raise money mainly for her father's medical bills. “Angie's Art Exhibition” will be at the North End Recreation Centre, located at 262 North Main Street in Waterbury. She's also using it to help the Fairfield Animal Shelter. Angie loves animals—you see that on many of her paintings.
This isn't the first time that Angie has put her paintbrush to good use helping others. Her mother tells News 8 that Angie has also used her work to help her community: a local family who lost their father, and children who needed school supplies.
“She has an angelic heart. If there were more people like her in the world, there wouldn't be so much chaos (混乱) and hate. I just look up to her and say ‘I'm very proud of you,’” her father said.
“My dad is a great person. Though he goes through this, he still loves me and supports me in any way he can. It makes me feel important,” she said.
