【改编自人教选必一U2】
Have you ever forgotten to lock the door of your house? Or, have you ever forgotten to switch off the TV or computer? These kinds of things happen to us all the time, waste resources, and can sometimes lead to problems. However, in the nottoodistant future, we will be living in smart homes that will lock the door for us when we are away and remember to switch off the TV when we forget. These smart homes will keep us secure, save us energy, and provide a more comfortable environment to live in.
Intelligent Controls
Today, we have to use switches for our lights, knobs for our appliances, and remote controls for our TVs and air conditioners. In the future, we will be using advanced technology every day for automatic control of just about everything in our home. The future home will use integrated sensors to tell when you leave home each morning, and then go into an energyefficient mode all by itself. You will no longer have to think about turning switches on and off yourself. Your home will also learn your daily routine and preferences, so everything will be ready for you when you get home each evening. Your lights will come on the instant you enter the door along with your favourite music or TV programmes, and you will find your dinner already prepared for you. All controls will respond to voice commands, so if you want to change your routine, you just say aloud what you want and the home system will obey.
Regular Health Checks
In addition, your smart home will be monitoring your health for you every day. Your bed, for example, will record how well you sleep every night. It will also be checking your body weight. If you start to have sleep or weight problems, it will send a warning to your phone. It will also give you suggestions on a healthier diet and how to sleep better.Smart toilets will be keeping constant track of your health as well. They can warn you early on if there is something abnormal or if you have a critical illness, such as cancer, and potentially save your life.
1.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Smart homes will cause more problems.
B.Smart homes will cost a lot of money.
C.People won't need to do anything in smart homes.
D.People will live a more comfortable life in smart homes.
2.What does the underlined word “integrated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Simple. B.Combined.
C.Separate. D.Basic.
3.How will the smart home help with people's health?
A.By giving them medicine.
B.By curing their diseases.
C.By sending them to the hospital.
D.By monitoring their sleep and weight.
4.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of the smart home?
A.Locking the door automatically.
B.Preparing dinner automatically.
C.Monitoring the environment outside.
D.Responding to voice commands.

(2025·重庆八中高一期末)Michael Faraday was an English chemist and physicist born into a workingclass family on 22 September, 1791. Faraday's father suffered from longterm health problems that often impeded his work. As a result, Faraday's family had little money and Faraday got very little formal schooling. But Faraday had active curiosity and determination to learn. While working in London as a teenager, he had access to a wide range of books and read everything he could get his hands on. By doing a lot of reading, Faraday soon educated himself on many scientific subjects, and his life as a scientist began.
In 1812, Faraday attended four lectures at the Royal Society given by a famous chemist named Humphry Davy. Afterwards Faraday sent a letter to Davy, expressing a strong interest in the subjects covered in the lectures and offering his service as a lab assistant. A year later, Davy accepted Faraday as his lab assistant. Thanks to his work with Davy, Faraday got a complete scientific education.
He soon began to do research and experiments on electricity. Although his time was mostly spent helping Davy, Faraday began to work on his own as a chemist and scientist of great importance. When Davy retired in 1827, Faraday took his place as the head of the chemistry department of the Royal Society. Upon taking up the position he could focus on his own research, and Faraday's most influential and celebrated work began in the 1830s. In 1831, he discovered electromagnetic induction (电磁感应), a breakthrough in the field of technology. In 1846, he gave a lecture that presented important ideas about the magnetooptical effect(磁光效应), and these later inspired the historical work of James Clerk Maxwell related to the electromagnetic field theory.

(2025·重庆高一检测)What kind of people can become scientists? When a group of researchers posed that question to 9thand 10thgraders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or “Anyone who seems interested in the field of science.”
Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I'm not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It's easy for them to see a scientist's work as arising from an inborn talent.
But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science.Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention (干预) to change students' beliefs that scientific achievement depends on ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.
During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday.Intellectual (智力的) struggle stories: stories about how scientists “struggled intellectually,” such as making mistakes while addressing a scientific problem and learning from them.Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support.Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of coexisting challenges.
Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their science performance afterintervention, compared to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom being exposed to struggling stories led to significantly better scienceclass performance than lowperforming students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling more personally connected to the scientists.By recognizing a scientist's struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize (共情) with the scientists during their own struggles.

6.Which stories will probably motivate students most?
A.Michael Faraday was interested in chemistry and physics from a young age.
B.Marie Curie got involved in aiding soldiers of World War Ⅰ.
