Columbus was born in a port city of Italy in 1451. As a teenager, he loved sailing, and he showed great interest in geography, which inspired him to begin his career as a seaman. Columbus insisted on searching for a direct sea route to the East Indies by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. After continuous attempts, he received financial support from the King and Queen of Spain. On 3 August 1492, he departed from Spain with three ships carrying about 90 crewmen. The journey was full of challenges: it took longer than expected, they faced a shortage of food, and one of the ships was leaking badly, which put everyone on this ship in grave danger. The men on board were in panic. Regardless of all the challenges, Columbus managed to keep everyone out of danger with his knowledge and bravery across the ocean. Finally, on 12 October, the crew spotted land in the distance. Columbus called the natives living on the islands Indians because he was convinced that he was in the East Indies. However, the shores they had reached were of the Caribbean, not the East Indies. Between 1493 and 1504, Columbus found more land over the course of his three subsequent voyages. The major contribution of this great explorer is that he “discovered” the New World. His discovery inspired explorers such as Captain James Cook to explore and discover more vast areas of the world. His voyages opened a new chapter of the Age of Exploration, a period which witnessed many important geographical findings. This period also allowed for an international exchange of ideas and cultures. 1.What inspired Columbus to start his sailing career?( ) A.Love of the sea. B.Interest in geography. C.Passion for adventure. D.Attachment to a foreign culture. 答案:B 2.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?( ) A.Financial support. B.Enough food. C.The journey. D.A sea route. 答案:C 3.Which is NOT one of the challenges that Christopher Columbus and his crew encountered?( ) A.A lack of financial support. B.A shortage of food. C.One of the ships was leaking badly. D.The journey took longer than expected. 答案:A 4.Which of the following about Columbus is TRUE according to the passage?( ) A.The New World Columbus “discovered” was India. B.Columbus and his crewmen finally arrived at the East Indies. C.Columbus received financial support from the King and Queen of Italy. D.Columbus and his ships set sail from Spain and finally reached the shores of the Caribbean. A As an astronomer, I am accustomed to observing the universe in quiet places.I observe galaxies in the deep universe—places so far away that their light takes billions of years to reach our eyes. Sometimes I wonder what our own galaxy looked like billions of years ago before our solar system was born.I often stare at the Hubble Deep Field (哈勃深空区) searching for clues: galaxies colliding(碰撞), stars exploding, and stellar nurseries. Can looking to the stars bring us closer together? A couple of months ago, Betelgeuse, a bright star in the Orion constellation (猎户星座) started to get dimmer and dimmer.Astronomers all over the world thought this might be a signal that the star was about to explode.Though it might not happen for another 1,000 years or more, still I went outside every night to check it out.I was hoping that it would explode.Imagine seeing a star shining as bright as the full moon even during the day. I started dreaming about using such_an_event to remind everyone that stars produce nearly all of the chemical elements in the universe, which came directly out of the Big Bang.Everything we breathe, touch and see was made inside of stars. The iron in our blood, calcium in our bones, and almost the entire periodic table are products of stellar evolution. Betelgeuse did not explode, and more recent observations note that it is actually returning to normal. But nothing is normal here on Earth now.I am beginning to realise that we did not need a star to explode to unite us.All we needed was a common problem. I am hoping that everyone on the planet is saving some time to contemplate (凝视) the universe and to realise we are not alone. No matter where we are or who we are, we are on this planet together.Since we are all made of stars, looking up at the night sky gives us a glimpse of our past and our future, and we can contemplate both together. 1.According to the article, what do we know about Betelgeuse?( ) A.It is a star the author tracked for years. B.It will produce chemical elements if it explodes. C.It is a normal star which is disappearing. D.It will explode in ten thousand years. 根据第四段中的“to remind everyone that stars produce nearly...which came directly out of the Big Bang”可知,宇宙大爆炸后,星球创造了宇宙中几乎一切的化学元素;而参宿四是一个星球,因此如果它爆炸,可以释放化学元素。 2.What does the underlined phrase “such an event” in paragraph 4 refer to? ( ) A.Betelgeuse's potential explosion. B.Betelgeuse's getting dimmer and dimmer. C.The author's checking out every night. D.A star's shining as bright as the sun. 根据第三段中的“Astronomers all over the world thought this might be a signal that the star was about to explode.” 3.Why does the author write this passage? ( ) A.To advise others to stare at a potentially exploding star recently. B.To research into the scientific mystery in the universe with readers. C.To discuss the proper relationship between humans and the universe. D.To advise us to think about the way human beings live in this world. 4.What's the best title for this passage? ( ) A.What Should an Astronomer Do? B.Should We Know More About the Universe? C.Looking to the Stars Can Bring Us Closer Together D.Getting United Is a Problem Impossible to Solve C B (2025·中山高一检测)Some breathtaking blue lakes may not be so blue in the future, thanks to climate change. In the first global record of lake color, researchers find that roughly onethird of Earth's lakes are blue. But, should average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, some of those clear waters could turn a cloudy green or brown, the team reports in the Geophysical Research Letters. The changing colors could change how people use those waters and offer information about the balance of lake ecosystems. The lake color depends in part on what's in the water, but factors such as water depth and surrounding land use also matter.Compared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more algae (水藻) and organic matter, says one of the researchers. The scientists then look at local climates during that time to see how they may be linked to lake colors around the world.Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were below 19 ℃ were more likely to be blue than lakes with warmer summers, the researchers find.If average summer temperatures increase another 3℃—an amount that scientists think is possible by the end of the century—those 3,800 lakes could turn green or brown. That's because warmer water helps algae produce more flowers, which changes the qualities of the water, giving it a greenbrown color. If some lakes do become less blue, people will probably lose some of the resources they have come to value, says O'Reilly, a scientist at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. But the color changes wouldn't necessarily mean that the lakes are any less healthy.“Humans don't value lots of algae in a lake, but if you're a certain type of fish species, you might be like this is great,” O'Reilly says. The lake color can hint at the balance of a lake's ecosystem and it gives a baseline for assessing how climate change is affecting Earth's freshwater resources.Continued monitoring of lakes could help scientists discover future changes. 5.Which factor connecting the lake color isn't mentioned?( ) A.Water depth. B.People's use of water. C.Surrounding land use. D.Contents in the water. 根据第三段中的“The lake color depends...also matter.” 6.Why could the lake color change if average summer temperatures rise by 3 ℃?( ) A.Because people will lose what they value. B.Because the quantities of the water is changed. C.Because algae grows more in warmer water. D.Because 3,800 lakes could turn green or brown. 7.What is O'Reilly's attitude toward the color change of the lakes?( ) A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Disapproving. D.Objective. 8.What is the main idea of the passage?( ) A.Climate change could change the lake color. B.The lake color shows the health conditions of lakes. C.The change of the lake color affects the lake ecosystem. D.The color change in lakes does harm to the environment. Ⅱ.七选五 (2025·蚌埠期末)Have you ever come back from a vacation feeling more tired than you were?
