(Text 10) W:A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling left out at break because her best friend wasn't around.⑱ Here's our advice to her, and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.⑲⑳ It's hard when a best friend isn't around, maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class.⑳ You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make new friends? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there's always room for more friends. Start by looking around your classroom⑳—thinking about which kids you'd like to play with at break. Look for chances to say “hi” to them, smile and be friendly. Offer to share something with or express your appreciation to them, invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” at lunchtime. If you have trouble doing this or if you're feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help, and pretty soon you'll have one, or two, or even more new friends. A There is a kind of woman in the world who has the ability to accomplish the difficult challenges of their own life and to inspire others to achieve great things. They're strong and independent, wise and successful, talented and brave, and can teach all of us a lot. Still Alice In this film, we can catch a glimpse of a family's relationships, fears, concerns and struggles. The film's main character Alice, aged 50, copes bravely with Alzheimer's disease: she's the perfect example of an iron-willed woman. The leading actress' amazing performance adds extra charm to this character. Erin Brockovich The film is about Erin Brockovich, a strong yet easily-hurt woman, but ordinary weakness is not allowed in her situation. She may not be a genius, but her persistence and concern for others allow her to achieve the impossible: a victory over a powerful and major corporation that is literally poisoning people. When you are about to give up on something, simply watch this movie for motivation. The Devil Wears Prada As assistant to impossibly demanding New York fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, young Andy Sachs has landed a job that “a million girls would die for”. Unfortunately, her heaven-sent appointment as Miranda's assistant just might be the death of her! There's a very classic line in the film: Let me know when your whole life goes up in smoke. That means it's time for a promotion. Mona Lisa Smile This movie teaches you about dignity, courage and persistence, and the central theme is learning to have a mind of your own. Katherine Watson is a recent UCLA graduate hired to teach art history at the all-female Wellesley College, in 1953. Determined to face up to the outdated customs of society, Katherine inspires her traditional students to challenge the lives they are expected to lead. 21.Which film would you recommend to your grandmother if she were seriously ill?( ) A.Erin Brockovich. But at the age of 67, and fresh off her retirement, she surprised everyone with a decision to travel 4,000 km northwest, starting a new chapter as a volunteer teacher. In September 2021, Xu joined a national silver-age teacher action plan, a programme launched by the Ministry of Education to take advantage of the wealth of experience and knowledge of retired educators to promote the educational quality of universities in the western regions. Most of the retired teachers come from the economically developed large cities in the central and eastern regions. However, they were not afraid of Xinjiang's dry climate, sandy weather and relatively modest living facilities. Despite being a volunteer, the teachers work with great energy. Take 63-year-old Zhong Dakang, for instance. He works overtime and is frequently seen focusing all his attention on the computer in his office throughout the day. Due to his devotion, he often forgets to take his blood-pressure pills. Chen Xiaohe, 70, is a retired teacher from a university in Shanghai. Having difficulty walking following a car accident, he still enjoys standing in front of a class. Chen even stayed on the Karamay campus during the winter and summer vacations, preparing lessons and teaching materials. He has extended his first one-year volunteering contract (合同) to three years. The praise he received from his students might be the reason behind his decision to extend his stay. The course he teaches has often been praised for its “clarity” and being “easy to comprehend”. The term “Silver-haired Power” has emerged as one of China's top 10 buzzwords this year. It means that the vitality of the elderly should not be held back by aging, as they deserve care and happiness, as well as opportunities to continue making contributions to society. 24.Why did Xu Shuangmin surprise everyone after retirement?( ) A.Because she moved northwest with her family. But when it comes to who will send the message first to get reconnected, most people just can't make up their mind. According to a new study, everyone expects to rebuild old friendships, but surprisingly we are often afraid to take the first step. The study has also provided helpful suggestions on picking up old friendships. The researchers conducted a survey of almost 530 people. As the findings showed, over 90 percent of them said that they could think of a long-lost friend and would like to speak with him again. However, when they were asked to send a message, only about one out of ten actually did. “We all know that trying to change people's minds might not be the best practice,” says Nora Marshal, lead researcher of the study. “Instead of changing people's minds, we needed to change their behavior.” The research team came up with a new strategy, which was tested out by conducting a “warm-up” practice. One group spent three minutes sending messages to their present friends, while the other group spent three minutes watching videos on their phones. Then, everyone was asked to write and send a message to an old friend. The practice task proved successful: 62 percent of those who had warmed up did send the message—a two-thirds increase over those who hadn't. By contrast, only 11 percent of those watching videos reached out to an old friend. So why is getting old friends reconnected difficult and why do we need to practise some warm-ups first? Over time, old friends can start to feel like strangers. That is why people feel worried about reconnecting. “We advise people not to overthink the situation and just press ‘send’,” said Nora. “Just take their friend's position and think about how much they would appreciate receiving a note from an old friend.” 28.What does the new study show?( ) A.People are afraid to lose their old friends. C.By teaming up with other groups. D.By comparing people's minds and behavior. 根据第三段中的“The researchers conducted a survey of almost 530 people.” 30.What is the key step of the new strategy?( ) A.Changing people's minds. B.Reading some warm-up messages. C.Watching videos related to friendship. D.Contacting present friends to warm up. 根据第五段中的“The research team came up with a new strategy...on their phones.”和第六段中的“The practice task proved successful...those who hadn't.” 31.What is Nora Marshal's suggestion for us?( ) A.Appreciate your friend's efforts. Lead researcher Jared Ott and his co-workers made two lists of 20 films produced after 1985.One list contained films described by users of a movie website as meaningful and inspiring, including films like Up.Films included in the second list were considered less meaningful, like Ratatouille. The study included 1,098 participants of different ages.Individuals were randomly (随机地) selected to receive one of the two lists and then were asked to identify which movies they'd seen. They then were asked to respond to a survey regarding one of the films they'd seen. The survey questions were about how they felt about the film, how it matched their values and how it might have changed their thought of life experience. The results showed that participants who discussed meaningful movies were more likely to say the film helped them understand difficulties in life. These participants also felt more encouraged to help others. Researchers found the key to these positive effects of more meaningful films lies in their emotional range, mixture of happiness and sadness and their ability to inspire viewers.“They help make people realize that life often involves both joy and gains, as well as sadness and losses, and that the very coexistence of such elements adds meaning to our life,” Ott says.“A focus on more universal themes of what it means to be human might resonate (引起共鸣) with people in a more long-lasting way—it makes sense.” While a causal (因果关系的) relationship between meaningful films and psychological well-being can't necessarily be built through this research,Ott points out that films are a readily available resource that can possibly help individuals achieve a greater sense of self. 32.How can Up benefit movie-goers according to the study?( ) A.By enriching their daily life. However, what I value most is honesty. As the saying goes,“Honesty is the best policy.” This is absolutely true. As one of the core socialist values, honesty is the fundamental factor on which all human relationships are based. Without honesty, our society will be filled with lies and fake products. As a result, nobody can be trusted and nothing can be achieved. My fellow students, let's always be honest. An honest person will win friends, an honest company will win customers, and an honest country will win the respect from the whole world. When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother as she read stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her. I will never forget one day when I was in the third grade. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl. I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home after school that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden. It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden.” “But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.” My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn't it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled, patting me gently. “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After the play, I took home the dandelions. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One possible version: “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. “The narrator's part is just as important as the part of a princess.” Her wise words inspired me with courage and confidence. But on the evening of the performance, I suddenly felt nervous backstage again. My teacher came over to me. “Your mother asked me to give you this,” she said, handing me some dandelions. Looking at them, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down. After the play, I took home the dandelions. My mother made them into dried flowers and put them into a glass bottle. Every time I see them, I am reminded of this unforgettable experience. I have taken part in many school plays, tried different roles and made many speeches ever since. Gradually, I've become really good at performing and public speaking, seldom feeling nervous onstage now. For this, I am forever grateful to my mother, who has made me what I am today. Text, one concert tickets are eight dollars for adults, half Price for . children. Here's our advice to her and to all kids who feel lonely. Sometimes it's hard when a best friend isn't around, maybe because he moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunch time. You want to have new friends, but how do you make new friends? Maybe IT seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there's always room for more friends. Start by looking around your classroom, thinking about which kids you'd like to play with that break, look for chances to say hi to them, smile and be friendly, offer to share something with or express your appreciation to them, invite someone to play with you, or say, do you want to sit here at lunch time if you have trouble doing this, or if you're feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend, be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help. And pretty soon you'll have one or two or even more new friends. A reader, roden, to say that he was feeling left doubt break because her best friend wasn't around.
