In-Person Travel vs Online Travel: Which Do You Prefer?
Today, people have two main ways to explore the world: in-person travel and online travel. Both allow you to discover new places, but they offer very different experiences.
In-person travel means visiting places in real life. You can walk through historic streets, taste local food, and talk to local people. For example, if you visit the ancient town of Wuzhen, you can touch the stone bridges and feel the river breeze. This kind of travel usually requires time and money—you may need to book transport and accommodation. However, it provides real experiences and lasting memories.
Online travel, on the other hand, is done through the internet. With virtual tours, you can “walk” through the Forbidden City or “visit” the Louvre Museum from your home. It is low-cost and convenient—no packing, no waiting in lines. But you cannot smell the flowers or taste the local dishes.
Many students have different preferences. Zhang Wei, a 14-year-old, enjoys in-person travel. “Last summer, I went to Chengdu. I tried hotpot and saw pandas. It was much better than watching videos,” he said. His classmate Liu Mei prefers online travel. “After I finish my homework, I can easily ‘visit’ a museum in just a few minutes. It helps me learn about the world even when I’m busy,” she explained.
Whether you choose in-person or online travel, the most important thing is to stay curious and enjoy the journey of discovery.
1.What does in-person travel mean according to the passage?
2.How can people take virtual tours?
3.Why does Liu Mei prefer online travel?
4.What is the most important thing no matter which kind of travel people choose?
5.What is one advantage of online travel mentioned in the passage?
Reading is very important for students. It helps us learn more, open our minds and improve our writing. There is a famous saying, “Read ten thousand books; travel ten thousand miles.”
We can read different types of books. Fiction is interesting and exciting. Novels like Gulliver’s Travels bring us amazing stories. Non-fiction helps us learn facts about history, science and nature.
We can borrow books from the school library. We can borrow three books at a time and must return them within a month. We must keep quiet in the library and take good care of books.
We should write a reading journal after reading. We can write down the title, writer, main ideas and our opinions. It helps us understand the book better.
Reading good books makes us wise and happy. Let’s make reading a lifelong habit.
1.What does reading help us do?
2.What are the two main types of books in the passage?
3.How many books can we borrow at a time from the library?
4.What should we write in a reading journal?
5.What does the writer think of reading?
Reading is not just about finishing a book. It can also be a wonderful activity to share with others. Here are some reasons why reading with others is great.
Enjoy quiet moments together
Reading with a friend or family member doesn’t always mean talking. Sometimes, sitting together and reading quietly can help both of you relax. It is a simple way to enjoy each other’s company without any pressure. You can read side by side in a comfortable place, like a sofa or under a tree. Just being together while reading can make the experience more enjoyable.
Learn from each other
When you read the same book as someone else, you can share your thoughts about it. You might notice different things in the story. One person may like the main character, while the other may enjoy the setting. Talking about these differences helps you see the story from another point of view. It also helps you understand your friend better.
Build a habit together
If you find it hard to read regularly, having a reading partner can help. When you know someone is reading the same book, you will feel more motivated to keep going. You can set goals together, such as reading a few chapters each week. This shared goal makes reading a habit that is easier to keep.
Feel more connected
Books often talk about feelings and experiences that are common to everyone. When you read about a character who faces a challenge, you might think about your own life. Sharing these thoughts with someone else can make you feel less alone. It builds a deeper connection between you and your reading partner.
1.What kind of place does the text suggest for reading quietly with others?
2.How can talking about the same book help you understand your friend?
3.Why does having a reading partner help you build a reading habit?
4.What can books help readers think about according to the last paragraph?
5.Would you like to read a book with a friend? Why or why not? (请自拟一句话作答)

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (《穿条纹睡衣的男孩》) is a novel by Irish author John Boyne. This book describes World War Ⅱ from a child’s eyes. A nine-year-old German boy, Bruno, grows up in Berlin. He loves his peaceful life, with his parents, sister and three best friends.
But after a visit from Adolf Hitler, Bruno’s father, Ralf, becomes the head of the death camp Auschwitz. Bruno and his family have to move there. He sees the wire fence (电线围栏) around the death camp, and the prisoners’ (犯人) uniforms—“striped pyjamas”. In the camp, he meets a Jewish boy from Poland named Shmuel. The two become good friends.
It turns out that they share the same age and birthday. If you look deeper, the boys actually mirror each other. They are both naive (天真的) children, unaware of (未察觉) the bad times they live in.
At the end of the book Bruno dresses in “striped pyjamas” and sneaks into the camp to help Shmuel find his missing father.
After searching for a while and not finding anything, Bruno gets ready to sneak back home when the soldiers start gathering Jews for a “march”. They all enter a gas chamber (毒气室) and are never heard from again.
This story tells us that people aren’t born bad or evil, and we are all more alike than different. Bruno and Shmuel wanted nothing more than a friendship, but because of the horrible world they were in, even that was just a dream.

There are more than 30 lakes named “West Lake” in China. But the West Lake in Hangzhou is the most famous of them all. It lies in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province on the southeastern coast. And the city is well known as a paradise in China.

Since the 9th century AD, the beautiful scenery of the West Lake in all seasons has appeared in poems, stories and legends. It’s roughly estimated (估计) that there are about 630 legends of the West Lake alone.

Going camping is the best fun in the world if we know how to do it. Every healthy boy and girl, if possible, should enjoy living outdoors for a week or two every year.
A group of four members makes a good number for a camping trip. They may agree better than two or three. They can do much of the camp work with two people. No one needs to be left alone to look after the camp while the others go fishing or to find food and water.
It is always better to go camping with someone who “camped out” before. If you can’t find such people, then make your plans, decide what you will do and how you will do it, and take a few cooking lessons from your mother or someone else.
First, choose a leader, not because he is more important than the rest but because if someone goes ahead and gives directions, the life in camp will run much more easily and everyone will have a better time.
If it is your first experience in camping, you had better go somewhere near home. The best place is the one that you can get to by car. If you have to carry your supplies on your back, the amount you can take will be much less.
After you have some experience near home, you can safely try the other way. It doesn’t matter where you go. Near every large city there are some lakes or rivers where you can find a good camping place. Campers always have more fun if they are near some water, but if you can’t find such a place, go into the forest. Try to get away from towns or villages. The wilder the place is, the better.
1.What does the writer think is the best fun in the world?
2.How many members make a good number for a camping trip?
3.Where should you go if it’s your first time to go camping?
4.What does a leader usually do while camping?
5.Do you enjoy camping? Why or why not?

In the early days of history, being a good neighbor was very important. Neighbors helped one another build houses, and clear fields. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment.
But today in our cities and suburbs, friendly relationship between neighbors is not common. A family may not even know the other families that live next door to them. We live in an age of machines, and each family may have its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did. Machines keep people apart in other ways. In our grandparents’ time, women met while they hung out the washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed the lawns. Today, they cannot hear anything above the noise of their power lawn mowers. And women stay inside with their electrical dryers, which help dry their clothes. Children are inside watching their favorite TV shows. Is the idea of being a good neighbor old-fashioned?
In 1965, a power cut hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left helpless. Suddenly, everyone shared the same problem, and the largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other people helped direct traffic. In elevators, people played word games and helped cheer each other up.
In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbor is important.
1.What did neighbours do to help each other in the early days of history?
2.Why do people no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did?
3.What do women use their electrical dryers to do?
4.How did New Yorkers feel during the power cut in 1965?
5.What do you think of being a good neighbor? Why?

One day Anne’s stepmother Marilla told Anne that Miss Stacey, a new teacher, came to Green Gables. “Anne, Miss Stacey says you are doing well in school. If you can study better, you will pass the exam for Queen’s College. Then, after a year at the college, you can become a teacher!” said Marilla. Anne was very happy. “Oh, I’d love to be a teacher!” Then in the afternoons, Anne and some of her friends studied late at school for the exam and Miss Stacey helped them.
The time passed quickly. On a warm summer day in early June, Anne took the exam. Three weeks later, Diana, one of Anne’s friends, ran into the kitchen at Green Gables, waving (挥动) a newspaper. “Look, Anne!” she shouted. “You came in first!” Anne took the newspaper and saw her name at the top of two hundred students. For the first time in her life, she was too excited to say a word.
The evening before Anne left for college, her stepmother cried. “I was just thinking of the time when you were a little girl,” said Marilla. “And, now you are going away...” Anne held Marilla’s hands and said, “Marilla, nothing will change. I may be bigger and older, but I’ll always be your little Anne.”

2.How many members make a good number for a camping trip?

Chen Daming is a 65-year-old villager from Shandong Province. He has been a village doctor for more than 40 years.

【导语】本文节选自《绿山墙的安妮》,主要介绍了Anne努力学习最后考出好成绩以及她的继母对她的疼爱。
1.根据“Anne’s stepmother Marilla told Anne that Miss Stacey, a new teacher, came to Green Gables.”可知,Stacey是一位新老师,Anne的老师。故填She was Anne’s new teacher.
2.根据第二段“Then in the afternoons, Anne and some of her friends studied late at school for the exam and Miss Stacey helped them.”可知,之所以安妮和她的一些朋友在学校学习到很晚,是因为要为考试做准备。故填To prepare for the exam.
3.根据“For the first time in her life, she was too excited to say a word.”可知,当她看到她的名字出现在最上面时,她激动地说不上话来。故填She was too excited to say a word.
4.本题是一道开放性试题,答案言之有理即可。故填I like Anne best because she is hard-working and grateful. She studies hard to achieve her dream and loves Marilla deeply, which really moves me and inspires me a lot.
