Sun Simiao, the author of the earliest encyclopedia for traditional Chinese medicine, has been worshiped across the country as the King of Medicine ever since his time in the early Tang Dynasty.
Sun was born in Shaanxi Province in northwestern China, where many locals frequently contracted unusual illnesses at that time. Even Sun's father was suffering from night blindness and his mother had serious thick-neck symptoms. So, Sun studied very hard and was determined to become a doctor once he grew up to provide medical care for his parents, relatives and neighbors in his home village.
In addition to various Chinese classics, the young Sun dug deep into every medical treatise that he could have access to. He also traveled to various places to collect folk and family recipes and study the medical effects of thousands of herbs. He was particularly interested in identification and preparation of herbs (草药).
Sun began his medical practice at the age of 18. After he gained a great reputation as a medical specialist, Sun began to write a 30-volume medical work called Qianjin Yaofang or Essential Prescriptions (药方) Worth a Thousand Gold. In ancient China, there was a saying that “A life is worth a thousand gold”. So, the title indicates that the more than 5,300 recipes contained in the book are life-saving prescriptions.
And because of its comprehensive and well-researched contents, the book was regarded by later generations of Chinese herbal doctors as the first encyclopedia of traditional Chinese medicine.
Sun was not only known for his remarkable ability in treating illnesses and saving lives but also his lofty morals and conduct. For instance, in one article Sun wrote, “When a great physician treats patients, he must maintain his inner serenity, pay no attention to personal desires or demands, and feel great sympathy for the patients. He should vow to save people from their sufferings, no matter they are rich or poor, old or young, friends or enemies.”

Have you heard of Yangshi Lei?For some 200 years, the Lei family provided their design and architectural talent to the Qing Dynasty as imperial builders.Spanning seven generations, their skills along with excellent craftsmanship ensured that they rose to great fame and influence in China. In their later work, they incorporated details of the southern architectural style and garden design ideas in their designs.
One of the places showing this is the Summer Palace.Situated in Haidian District, northwest of Beijing, it shows the beauty and the grandeur of royal gardens. In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List and described it as “a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design”.With over 3,000 man-made structures, which include bridges, pavilions, and corridors, even the lake area alone is a showcase of many of the Lei family's excellent designs.
Kunming Lake is designed to represent the traditional Chinese gardening practice of “one pond, three hills”.There are three small islands within Kunming Lake:Nanhu Island, Zaojiantang Island, and Zhijingge Island.
Many features of Kunming Lake are inspired by the scenery from the region south of the Yangtze River. In particular, the West Dike is a recreation of the famous Sudi Dike on West Lake in Hangzhou. The causeway (堤道), which can be walked across, cuts diagonally (斜对地) through the southern part of the lake.Like the Sudi Dike, the West Dike is connected by six bridges, each with its own distinctive style. The largest bridge on Kunming Lake, however, is the 17-Arch Bridge. It combines features of the Precious Belt Bridge in Suzhou and the Lugou Bridge in Beijing. The entire bridge is 150 meters long and eight meters wide.
If you can't go further than Beijing, then don't miss the National Library of China. This is where most of the Lei family's architectural design drafts are kept. These include projective (投影的) drawings, front and side elevations, revolving drawings, and even some architectural models which look remarkably like digital models made today. This shows the advanced drawing technology and skill of the Lei architects.Their architectural ability was way ahead of their time.
Like the Summer Palace, many others of the Lei family's structures have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Also, in 2007, their architectural drawings and models were included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. The Lei family's significant influence on Chinese imperial architecture ensures that their work is still remembered and appreciated.

In China, jade (玉) serves as one of the nation's oldest symbols of virtue and nobility. For years, jade carvers have produced beautiful artworks, because of their exquisite skills and complicated techniques passed down from generation to generation.Among China's wide-ranging styles of jade carving, Beijing's is one of the most famous and recognized worldwide for its use of imperial elements.
Jade carving originated in the Yuan Dynasty. In the succeeding dynasty, the Ming, the court gathered skilled jade carvers from all over the nation to create the finest of products for the imperial family, lifting the art to new heights.During the Qing Dynasty, jade became especially popular in Beijing, and the carving skill reached its peak. After the Qing, the craft continued to flourish, with thousands of people pouring their creativity into the jade carving industry. In 2008, Beijing's particular practices were listed as national intangible cultural heritage.
Zhang Tiecheng is a third-generation Beijing jade carving inheritor. In 1983, when the technical school attached to the Beijing Jade Factory began to enroll students, Zhang decided to try his luck. After four years of training, he graduated and started working at the factory.Through pure diligence and perseverance, he gradually became a master of the carving art.The year 2008 was a significant one for Zhang.Chinese jade art was introduced internationally through the “Chinese Seal” Olympic symbol and the jade-carved medals.Zhang participated in the design of both. They combined white jade with gold, a light greenish jade with silver, and a gray shade of jade with bronze to make the medals present that perfect combination of truthfulness and virtue.
Following his Olympic work, Zhang was invited to restore the jade decorations in the Palace Museum.During this assignment, Zhang couldn't help but feel sad as he realized how the once successful jade artistry was slowly disappearing from its once celebrated stage. As an inheritor of Beijing jade carving, Zhang has added modern artistic elements into this traditional skill. He now hopes more young people can take up the craftsmanship so it can continue to flourish for many years to come.

A Precious Dress
I was raised in a family where my parents were united in their way of bringing up children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out, and she managed the family budget effortlessly.Looking back, I honestly think I would be a different person if my mum hadn't turned a dress into a life lesson I carry with me today.
If we complained about not having what another kid did, we'd hear something like “I don't care what so-and-so got for his birthday. You are not getting a car for your birthday or a lavish sweet-16 party.” We had to earn our allowance (零花钱) by doing chores around the house. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house.I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our dining table.Sometimes, I couldn't even contain my envy of Chloe, a neighbourhood girl, always beautifully dressed, whose parents satisfied almost every need of her.
One day, my mother drove me downtown to buy some household necessities — and there it was in the shopping window.Pink, lovely, delicately trimmed (装饰) with lace, the dress winked (眨眼) at me and I knew I had to have it.“It's beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her.“What a beautiful dress!”
I tried to hide my desire at first. But then I guess I couldn't stand it any longer.“Mum, please get it? I'll do anything, but I need that dress.I love it.Please?”
I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I make enough, it'll be sold!”
“There might be a way,” she said.
And so our paying plan unfolded.Mum bought the dress and put it safely in some hiding place which I couldn't find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing savings increased by extra work.Weeks later, I counted and jumped for joy.Oh, I made it!I finally had the exact amount we'd agreed on.Having put on my dress, I flew to school like a bird. However, the unthinkable happened.

参考范文:
The moment I arrived at the school gate, Chloe appeared in exactly the same dress. At the sight of this horrible turn of events, I was green with envy.“How ridiculous!” my heart sank. For Chloe, getting such a dress was merely a piece of cake, while for me, it's just the other way round. With a mixed feeling of rage and grief, I dashed home to tell my mother about this disaster.“It's unfair!” I exclaimed with fury, storming into my room and slamming the door before she could respond.
Hearing me crying loudly, Mum gently pushed the door open.“Honey, are you OK?” she walked up to me, gathered me into her arms and tenderly wiped away my tears. After learning about what had happened, she pointed at the shiny dress hanging in the most visible place, adding “Your dress is the most precious one because you paid for it.Don't you think so?” On hearing what she said, I felt much relieved.“Yes, you earned it through hard work,” a firm and cheerful voice answered in my heart.Nothing could be better than gaining the precious thing in that way!
