Traditional Tie-Dyeing: A Colorful Art from China
Tie-dyeing is an ancient Chinese craft with a history of more than 1,500 years. It became very popular during the Tang Dynasty and has been passed down from generation to generation. Today, this traditional art is still loved by many people around the world.
The process of tie-dyeing is interesting. First, you need a piece of white cloth, some thread and natural dyes. The dyes are usually made from plants like indigo (靛蓝) and safflower. Then, you twist the cloth into different shapes and tie it tightly with thread. The parts of the cloth that are tied won’t be dyed. After that, you put the cloth into the dye and leave it for several hours. When the cloth is dry, you untie the thread. You will be surprised to see beautiful patterns on the cloth. Each piece of tie-dyed cloth is unique because the way of twisting and tying is different every time.

A legendary Chinese painting
Have you heard about a world-famous landscape painting named Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains? It was painted by Huang Gongwang, one of the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty. Huang was almost eighty years old when he began working on Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. He first made a rough drawing of the whole painting in one sitting. He Hua Shen was one of the most eye-catching programs at the 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. It brought together twelve performers, each standing for a goddess in charge of one month’s flower. The show was based on the traditional Chinese custom of the twelve monthly flower goddesses, which has been popular for hundreds of years.
What made the show special was its perfect mix of traditional culture and modern technology. The designers created costumes in classic Chinese styles, using non-heritage fabrics and patterns from ancient cultural relics. For example, Li Qin, playing the Goddess of Osmanthus (桂花), wore an elegant Song-style dress that showed the beauty of traditional clothing. Qin Lan appeared as the Goddess of Peach Blossoms, whose look was soft and lovely like blooming peach flowers.
Besides beautiful looks, the program also carried deep cultural meanings. Each flower and goddess stands for certain values in Chinese culture. The chrysanthemum (菊花) means purity and independence, while the lotus (荷花) stands for honesty and elegance. Through beautiful scenes, the show told these cultural stories in a lively and modern way.
Modern technology played an important role, too. With AI and 3D effects, the stage looked like a real garden where flowers of twelve months bloomed at the same time. The amazing visual (视觉的) experience made the program popular among people of all ages, especially the young.

Have you ever heard of the Mona Lisa? It is one of the most famous paintings in the world. Painted by Leonardo da Vinci, it brings millions of visitors to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
The painting shows a woman sitting straight in a chair with her hands together. Her face shows a mysterious (神秘的) smile that has puzzled (使困惑) people for centuries. Some people say the smile seems to change when you look at it from different angles. When you look at the eyes, the smile appears clearer, but if you look directly at her mouth, it seems to disappear.
Scientists have studied the Mona Lisa using modern tools. They found that Leonardo da Vinci used a technique called “sfumato (晕涂法)”, which means “smoky” in Italian. This technique softly blends the edges of the woman and the background together, creating a feeling of depth and mystery.
Another interesting thing about the Mona Lisa is its history. It was painted around 1503-1506. Leonardo da Vinci worked on it for many years. After he died, the painting passed through many hands. It was even stolen in 1911! The thief (小偷), Vincenzo Peruggia, was an Italian man who believed the painting should be returned to Italy. Many people may throw away the pits inside fruits after eating them, but inheritors of nut carving(核雕继承人)have turned them into artworks instead.
Weifang nut carving goes back to the Qing Dynasty. During that time, an old imperial craftsman(皇家手艺人)Wang Dayan spread the skill to the local people in Shandong Province. Craftsmen back then often used peach pits(核桃)to show off their artistic skills. Because of the high level of carving skills needed, the traditional culture and its rich artistic theme, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage(国家非物质文化遗产)in 2008.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters long, can be made into fan pendants, earrings, buttons, seals and so on,” said Tan Wanhai, 48, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving. Tan has studied the art of nut carving for 25 years and has created many nut carvings.
However, the craftsman also said that bringing this kind of artwork to life is not easy. “Unlike some pits like olive (橄榄)pits which have a flat surface, each peach pit has its own special texture(质地)like human fingerprints,” Tan said, adding that, craftsmen have to study each peach pit to carefully plan out their artwork.
Nut carving craftsmen also need to have knowledge in many areas. According to Tan, they have to master skills in painting, seal carving and calligraphy from many traditional cultures.
Thanks to their creative design and fresh ideas, Weifang nut carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China. More people are learning the art and have even become inheritors to pass down the skill to young people.
“Now, the number of inheritors is about 1,000. But I believe it could be bigger. More craftsmen now give up the tradition of passing down the skill only through the family and open it up to anyone who is interested in learning the skill,” said Tan.

Many traditional woodcut prints (版画) are either black and white or simple in color, but reduction woodcuts (绝版木刻) can show rich colors.
The reduction woodcut uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artist cuts and prints different layers (层) in order on the same piece of wood. The reduction woodcuts became an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Pu’er, Yunnan, in 2009.
Leng Guangmian is a 40-year-old artist who makes pictures by carving (雕刻) on a piece of wood . He started learning this in 2003. Leng said that making these woodcut prints is like going on an amazing experience. Before he starts carving, he needs to plan the whole picture and choose colors for different layers. First, he carves on a piece of wood. Then, he puts colors on the wood to make a wooden print. After that, he carves more pictures into the same wood, puts different colors, and prints over and over again. “Every time I print the pictures, I never know what they will look like in the end,” he said. “As I see beautiful pictures layer by layer, I get more excited,” added Leng. However, finishing these artworks is not easy. A big picture usually takes several months to finish.
Leng wants his artwork to show both great woodcutting skills and the culture and life in Pu’er.“For my works, there are two themes: Tea Horse Road, because Pu’er is one of the starting places of that road; and disappearing villages,” Leng said. “Many old villages in Pu’er need rebuilding, so I want to make people remember their beauty before they are gone.”
Leng Guangmian is now getting more people to know about the reduction woodcuts. He trains farmers in Pu’er and brings the art into schools. To make students understand and learn the art quickly, he even thought of a new idea of cardboard printing. “By using a small cardboard and making it easier with three to five colors, students can get the beauty of the art.” Leng said.

A legendary Chinese painting
Have you heard about a world-famous landscape painting named Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains? It was painted by Huang Gongwang, one of the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty. Many experts think it is among the greatest masterpieces in Chinese art history. The story behind this painting is also very unusual.

In ancient China, there were “four treasures of the study”—the writing brush, ink, paper, and the inkstone (砚台). Among all the inkstones, the Chengni inkstone was one of the most famous and was widely loved.
The Chengni inkstone first appeared (出现) during the Western Han Dynasty, but the skills of making it were lost during the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. Thankfully, today the traditional skills have been revived (恢复) with the help of Lin Yongmao and his son Lin Tao.
In 1984, Lin Yongmao began working at the museum in Xinjiang, Shanxi Province. There he read some books about the Xinjiang Chengni inkstone, and then decided to revive the lost skills.
It was easier said than done. It took the father and son two years to find right materials to make the Chengni inkstone. That was just the first step. After failing many times, they finally made two perfect Chengni inkstones in 1991. Three years later, their Chengni inkstones won a gold prize at an expo (博览会) on China’s famous inkstones.
But the father and son did not stop there. While improving the skills of making the Chengni inkstone, they set up a workshop in the hope of passing the skills on to young people.

Tangchang, a town in Chengdu, is well-known for cloth shoes. With over 20 types, Tangchang cloth shoes are strong, soft, breathable and friendly to the environment. In 2018, they were added to Sichuan’s intangible cultural heritage list (非物质文化遗产名录).
63-year-old Lai Shufang has been making Tangchang cloth shoes for 40 years. Now she is very experienced. She said there are 32 steps to make a pair, but the most important step is making the soles.
Layers (层) of white cloth are glued together with flour paste (糨糊). “To make good paste, we make it at a temperature of 85℃. If it’s too low or too high, the paste will not work.” Lai said. Then the pasted layers are dried and cut into different shapes. After this, the layered cloth is beaten again and again until it is tight (紧实的) enough to make soles and upper parts. The next step is to shape the two parts and glue them together. But still the soles edges look fluffy. Through repeated polishing and trimming (滚压和修整), the fluffy edges (毛边) will become smooth. Then the cloth shoes are ready.
Lai’s hard work touched her son Ai Peng. In 2015, Ai decided to leave his job and help his mother.
