I love running, and for me, winning every race means success.
One day, my school held a sports event. I was ready and joined almost every running race. Many people came to watch. They were excited to see the running races because they were the most fun.
First was the 100m race. All the boys ran fast. As expected, I finished first and got loud applause (掌声).
Next was the 200m race. I ran as fast as possible and won again. The people cheered loudly. I jumped here and there happily and didn’t even shake hands with the other runners. It was tiring, but I felt proud and excited.
Then came the 400m race. After seeing my wins, many players have dropped out of the competition. Only one stayed: Matt, a special guest runner. Matt has low vision (视力) but plays many sports bravely. The teacher asked Matt if he continued the competition, but Matt surprised everyone by staying in the race. I thought I’d win easily, “This is useless. He probably can’t even see the finish line.”
The race began with just us two. When the starting gun fired, Matt and I both ran toward the finish line. I quickly ran ahead of Matt. Just 30 meters from winning, I was waiting for my third cheer... But suddenly, I got a sudden, strong pain—my leg cramped (抽筋).

Once there was a lovely vegetable field with a very big tree in it. Both the vegetables and the tree made the garden look wonderful. However, in fact, the vegetables and the tree couldn’t get on well with each other.
The vegetables didn’t like the tree because they thought the tree didn’t leave them enough light by covering them with its thick leaves. The tree thought that the vegetables drank almost all the water before it could get to it.
The situation became worse and worse. One day the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground. The tree fought back by refusing to give the vegetables shade (树荫). Soon they both began to dry up (枯死). What’s worse, the gardener stopped watering his vegetable field because he thought it was hopeless to save the vegetables.
The tree and the vegetables regretted what they did. They also understood that it was better to help each other than to fight, but they had no way to solve the problem.
Luckily, a small pumpkin decided to do something to change the situation. The pumpkin did all he could to grow though there was little water and it was too hot. Finally, the gardener noticed the growing pumpkin among the dying vegetables. ________
1.Did the vegetables and the tree get on well with each other in the beginning?
2.How did the tree fight back against the vegetables?
3.What lesson did the tree and vegetables finally learn?
4.What might happen next? Finish the ending. (about 30 words)

In February 2025, China introduced a nationwide policy to give high school students two full days off every weekend. This change aims to reduce the heavy study pressure that students have faced for years. Before the policy, many students in provinces like Hebei only had one day or even half a day to rest each week. Now, schools are required to cancel all weekend classes and exams, allowing students to relax or develop personal interests.
According to the new rules, teachers cannot give extra (额外的) homework during weekends, but schools must keep libraries and sports fields open for students who wish to study or exercise voluntarily (自愿地). In cities like Changsha and Hangzhou, some schools have even started organizing weekend activities such as science clubs, art workshops, and community service programs.
Most students welcome the policy. “I finally have time to play basketball and read novels,” said Li Ming, a 16-year-old student. “I feel less tired and more focused during weekdays.” Studies also show that students who get enough rest perform better in exams. For example, a high school in Zhejiang reported a 15% improvement in average test scores after carrying out the policy.
However, some parents still worry. “Weekends used to be important for reviewing lessons. I’m afraid my child will fall behind,” said a parent. Rural (农村的) areas face bigger challenges. In villages where educational resources are limited, students have fewer chances to take part in after-school activities. To solve this, the government has created free online learning platforms and encouraged urban (城市的) schools to share resources with rural ones.
Many teachers believe this policy marks a turning point in China’s education. It brings both benefits (好处) and challenges to students. They suggest that ______.
1.Did high school students in Hebei have a whole weekend to rest each week before?
2.According to the new policy, what do schools have to keep open for students who wish to study or exercise voluntarily during weekends?
3.What benefits can the policy bring to students?
4.What suggestions may the teachers have? Finish the ending. (about 30 words)

Shi Guangyin is a farmer and eco-warrior (生态战士) from Dingbian, Shaanxi Province, China. Born in 1952, he grew up in a small town near the desert, where sandstorms often destroyed crops, houses, and even people’s lives. The local weather condition is terrible, and so is life for the locals. Growing up in such an environment, Shi knows how much pain and harm the sand can cause. As a child, Shi experienced the pain of losing his home because of sandstorms. At the age of 8, he lost his best friend in a sandstorm, which made him decide to fight against desertification (沙漠化).
Fighting against the desert is not an easy job. In 1968, Shi started leading local people to plant trees in the desert. After years of hard work, he succeeded in finding ways to grow trees in the sand. In 1984, he sold 84 sheep and borrowed money to plant trees on 200 hectares (公顷) of land. Although he had many difficulties, including failures in the harsh (艰苦) area of Langwosha, Shi never stopped fighting. In 1988, he finally succeeded in greening Langwosha by using new planting technology.
Shi was old. His son, Shi Zhanjun, continued planting trees but sadly died in a car accident while transporting trees. Shi’s grandson, Shi Jianyang, then took up the responsibility. Together, they have turned 23,334 hectares of desert into green land.
Shi believes that fighting against desertification is his lifelong duty. He says, “I shall not stop planting trees until my last breath.” His story shows how one person’s will can make a big difference in protecting nature and living in harmony (和谐) with the environment.
1.Was it easy for Shi Guangyin to fight against desertification?
2.Who continued Shi Guangyin’s work after his son’s death?
3.How did Shi Guangyin green the desert?
4.What do you want to say to Shi Guangyin after reading his story? (about 30 words)

Video cameras are everywhere: schools, theaters and stores. But in recent years, they have entered our homes. Many parents set up cameras at home to watch their children’s online classes and homework. Are cameras really helpful? What do students think about it?
Kevin
Earlier last year, I liked to lie in bed and watch videos instead of studying. This affected (影 响) my studies and made my grades worse. So my parents set up a camera to keep an eye on me.
It worked. With the camera watching, I had to do my homework first and make plans for studying at home. When I was alone at home, the camera made me feel safe because I knew that my parents were watching on the other side. My grades improved after a year.
Linda
When I was in Grade 8, my parents set up a camera in my room. ______
Knowing there was a camera around, when my friends came to my home, they would speak quietly and carefully. We couldn’t have pillow fights. I was sad. So I asked my parents to take the camera away. They agreed as long as I promised to behave well. I feel happy and free now.
1.Have video cameras entered our homes in recent years?
2.When did Linda’s parents set up a camera in her room?
3.What happened to Kevin after his parents set up a camera?
4.What happened after Linda’s parents set up a camera in her room? Finish Linda’s story in about 30 words.
Have you ever felt like studying is a bit boring but watching someone else study makes you want to join in?
You’re not alone.
“Companion Study (陪伴学习)” is a kind of live streaming (直播) on the Internet. It often shows real-time scenes of someone studying, in silence or with soft music. A research from a recent education platform result showed that before exams, the number of users in “Companion Study” increased by over 200%. Another survey of more than 5,000 students found that most of them felt more encouraged to study after joining in online study.
And some students even reported that they actually studied for longer time each day.
The idea behind it is that watching someone else study encourages us to do the same. It creates a sense of companionship for the users and provides shared focus, a common experience and a feeling of togetherness.
Why is it so popular among students? Here are some comments (评论).
Huang Lijun: Having study friends helps me stick to my study plan instead of giving up halfway. Knowing I have to study with them makes me more likely to follow my plan. Even on days when I don’t feel like studying, I still don’t want to let them down.
Lena: When someone studies with me, it’s easier to stay focused on my work and not get distracted (分心的). Just seeing another person working hard next to me makes it harder to pick up my phone or daydream. Their focus helps keep my mind on my tasks, too.
Jimmy: For me, studying with someone feels less lonely. We can take short breaks together, like chatting with my online learning dazi. It helps me out when I come across difficulties. I can talk through a problem with a friend to make it easier to understand.
1.Is “Companion Study” a kind of live streaming on the Internet?
2.What’s the idea behind “Companion Study”?
3.According to the three students, how can “Companion Study” help them?
4.Do you think “Companion Study” is good for your own study? Why or why not? (about 30 words)

Nowadays, Chinese people have more opportunities to enjoy various leisure activities. Traveling has become increasingly popular. Over the past few years, the number of Chinese tourists has grown rapidly, reaching 5. 6 billion domestic trips (国内游) in 2024 alone, while the income (收入) from domestic tourism reached 5.75 trillion (万亿) yuan in this year, showing a rapid growth.
In their free time, Chinese people today enjoy traveling to different places in China much more than going abroad. Traveling methods are developing rapidly. Most people prefer fast and convenient ways of traveling. However, reaching some places can be challenging, especially for first-time visitors. You need courage and lots of preparations beforehand (预先).
In the past, people mainly traveled by bus, train, or bicycle. But now there are more choices. When traveling across China, you can take high-speed rail, subways, or even planes. Air travel is more popular than before. Taking a bus in the countryside is becoming common. However, bus services in some tourist attractions (旅游景点) are not provided, so walking or taking a boat might be necessary.
The rise in travel shows more people want to visit new places and learn about different cultures. It shows travel is easier and cheaper for everyone in China. Recent data (数据) show that travel is not just a trend (趋势) but a big part of Chinese culture and economy.
1.Where do Chinese people today prefer to go for traveling?
2.What is becoming a common way of traveling in the countryside?
3.According to the passage, why do more people in China want to visit new places?
4.How do you like to get around, and what places would you like to visit? Choose one to reply, and give your reason. (about 30 words)
Nowadays, AI is developing fast and changing our life in many ways. Some people ask, “Why should we study English hard now? AI can translate it for us.” But the truth is that language is never just about words and sentences.
AI can help you translate a sentence correctly, but can it really explain the culture, history and people’s thinking behind it? Learning English is more than just mastering grammar rules and vocabulary. It’s a way to understand how people in other parts of the world think, feel and communicate with each other.
In the AI age, what we need are not just people who can use a language, but culture connectors. We need people who not only know English well, but also understand the education, politics, values and life of English-speaking countries. We should grow from simple language learners into global interpreters (译员) who can understand different ideas, emotions and cultures.
AI can give you the right words, but it can never give you real wisdom. It can’t help you make a deal, build trust with others, or understand the hidden meaning of words. These things can only be done by humans.
So, studying English as a major is still important. It’s not because the world is short of translators, but because we need more true bridge builders between different cultures. In a world where AI can give fast answers to almost everything, deep understanding between people is still priceless. That’s why an English major is more meaningful than ever in the AI era.
1.Can AI translate English for us?
2.What other ways can English help us besides mastering grammar and vocabulary?
3.What kind of people do we prefer in the AI age instead of just language users?
4.Do you think it’s necessary to learn English hard at school? Why or why not? (about 30 words)

About 41.1 percent of Chinese men were overweight or obese (肥胖的) compared with 27.7 percent of Chinese women, according to a study published in a well-known medical journal.
Chinese Body Mass Index (BMI体质指数) system describes overweight as BMI from 24 to 27.9 kg/m2 and obesity as BMI at or above 28 kg/m2. For example, a girl weighs 50 kilograms with a height of 1.6 meters. Her BMI is 19.53. You can know your BMI with the following formula (公式).
Researchers studied data from about 15.8 million people across about 250 cities in China. According to the Chinese BMI standard, 34.8 percent of the studied population was overweight and 14.1 percent was obese. These people were aged 18 or above.
There are several reasons why men are more likely to be obese. As fathers, husbands, and brothers, men usually have to endure long-term excessive (过度的) stress, which can make the body produce more stress hormones. Such hormones play a role in increasing fat storage.
Some men’s unhealthy habits, like drinking alcohol (酒), sitting for too long without moving at work and sleeping irregularly, are also closely related to obesity. Not to mention that men are less likely to pay attention to their weight, which adds to the problem of obesity. All the above can increase the risk of becoming obese.
By region (地区), the percentage of obesity in the north was generally higher than that in the south, with Inner Mongolia (37.1 percent), Shandong (37.1 percent), and Hebei (36.6 percent) being the top three.
People in higher BMI groups tend to have a greater number of complications (并发症). The early examination and intervention (干预) are important ways to prevent obesity-related complications.
1.Was the percentage of obesity in Hebei higher than that in Shandong according to the study?
2.If a boy is 1.5 m tall and his BMI is 24 kg/m2, how heavy is he?
3.Why are men more likely to be obese according to the passage?
4.If you become a little overweight, will you make up your mind to lose weight? Why or why not?

We do everything in a hurry like finishing our meals, completing our tasks, and running to the gym. We choose fast living because we think we have no control of time. We try to do as much as we can each day, checking off tasks on our to-do lists. Living in a rush feels like we are always pressed for time.
Our way of thinking is focused on speed, which values doing more over doing things well. For a long time, we have believed that speed means being productive and successful, so we keep rushing here and there in doing everything. Yet from time to time, we find ourselves in a predicament (困境) that no matter how fast we go, we never seem to be quick enough to catch up with our endless tasks and goals.
The Slow Movement thinks that the answer to our predicament is not to live faster, but to learn how to live slower. The movement began with the Slow Food Program, which was set up in 1986. It believed that we should fight against fast-food restaurants, protect traditional cooking, and encourage people to enjoy preparing and eating food.
The belief finally spread from the Slow Food Program to other parts of life. In 1999, it helped create Cittaslow, a group focused on slowing down life in cities. This belief about slowing down quickly began to influence areas like work, travel, fashion, and living in general.
The main idea of the Slow Movement is to value quality over quantity (数量). Slow living is a lifestyle based on the Slow Movement. Its goal is to free us from endless rush that stops us from enjoying moments of rest. Slow living encourages us to live each moment whole-heartedly and give everything the time it needs, rather than try to do as many things as possible in every minute of our lives. Today, more people are drawn to the idea of the Slow Movement, thanks to social media sharing the many benefits of living slowly.
1.Do we often face the problem of living in a hurry?
2.What is the answer to our predicament according to the Slow Movement?
3.How can the Slow Movement help us to solve the problem mentioned in this passage?
4.Which lifestyle do you prefer? Living fast or living slowly? Give at least two reasons.
Dear friends,
Recently, more and more young people in China prefer new professions to traditional ones. Are you among them? Please share your stories.
Wang Zi
I have had an interest in small animals ever since I was a child and have always wanted to work with animals. With the relaxation of China’s visa-free policy (免签政策) , more and more foreign tourists visit China for wildlife exploration. My main job is to provide personalized experience services for overseas tourists.
Many guests received by me mentioned that the image of China in front of them is very different from the image they see on social media. I hope that through my own efforts, more international friends can understand and fall in love with the real China.

Many Western people love the “ultra-Chinese” lifestyle, including the young. They try out many kinds of Chinese lifestyle such as drinking hot water, wearing warm cotton slippers, and practicing Baduanjin — a gentle traditional Chinese exercise.
NBA player Victor Wembanyama shows great interest in Chinese kung fu and has expressed a wish to visit the Shaolin Temple, and his online sharing of the learning journey spreads the beauty of Chinese martial arts to his fans around the world.
Besides, traditional Chinese aesthetics has won the heart of big brands like Adidas, which has introduced clothes with Chinese traditional designs and hired many Chinese stars for showing its products. These products are popular all over the world, showing Chinese culture to more foreign customers.
Moreover, Western Internet influencers are so fond of Chinese culture that they come to China to experience local life themselves. In their videos, they show their fans Chinese culture and daily lifestyle. For example, they introduce food delivery services such as Meituan and Taobao Shangou, and they are surprised at the convenient digital payment. Their sharing spreads the charm of China and makes many Western young people want to live like this.
More and more young people love Chinese lifestyle and culture. Lisa is a foreign student studying in China and she says, “During my stay in China, I had such an experience. ______________________________. This is different or even impossible in my country! And I hope everyone will come to China and experience it!”
Cultural experts say this trend fully shows China’s soft power is on the rise. Chinese technology and products have been important in Western life for decades, from Chinese phones and open-source AI models to cultural icons like Labubu. The trend is a natural result of this influence.

Many of us dream of becoming “somebody” when we grow up. But without enough strength or support, we often feel far away from this goal and even wonder: Should we just give up and “lie flat (平的)” instead?
The popular animated (动画的) hit Nobody tells us not to. In the story, the four little, nameless monsters pretend to be the famous characters from Journey to the West. They leave Langlang Mountain to set out on their own pilgrimage (朝圣之旅). Though others laugh at them, they never get discouraged (泄气的). They keep fighting “bad guys” and live life on their own terms. Their courage wins them wide remembrance (记忆).
This movie is like a mirror. In real life, many ordinary people also choose to hold on to their dreams, even though they face great difficulties.
Pang Zhongwang, a star student at Tsinghua University, is one example. Born into a poor family in Hebei, he faced hard challenges: his late (已故的) mother had a disability and couldn’t work. His father had a serious mental illness. Influenced by his mother, Pang stayed optimistic and took on family duties early. Deep down, this “nobody” also dreamed of becoming “somebody.” With great effort, he got excellent grades and scored an impressive 684 out of 750 in the gaokao.
Pang turns out to be luckier than the four monsters in Nobody. He is much closer to his dream of becoming “somebody”. The piggy and his friends, however, fail in their pilgrimage. But their courage is now remembered by many. In a way, they, too, have grown to become “somebodies”.
Now, what do you want to do with your big dreams? Clearly, if you “lie flat”, you’ll remain a “nobody”. We wish you good luck as you try to break out of your own “Langlang Mountain”!
1.Was Pang Zhongwang born into a poor family?
2.Why do the four little, nameless monsters in the story leave Langlang Mountain?
3.What are the similarities between the story of “Langlang Mountain” and Pang Zhongwang’s experience?
4.What is your big dream? What will you do to make your big dream come true?

Dear friends,
Fear can be a good thing. But sometimes you can be afraid of something that’s not really dangerous, or you may have a fear that is too much. Luckily, there are ways to beat fears back. Please share your stories.
Franklin
8:10 p.m. 16 Mar.
It all started when a Labradoodle tried to steal my food. I spent many years shaking in my shoes whenever a dog was nearby. I was tired of being so scared, so I checked out some books and read about brave and smart dogs. I imagined myself walking by a dog, then even stopping to pet a dog and playing with it.
Finally, I felt ready to see a real dog, so I went to the animal shelter (庇护所). I petted the kindest dog there. Dogs still aren’t my favorite animal, but I am not that scared of them anymore.
Farah
8:13 p.m. 16 Mar.
It all started when I took a plane trip, and the plane bounced up and down in the air like a wild horse. After that, I dared not do it ever again.
I missed my grandmother in London so much, so I decided to learn how planes stay in the air. I learned that airplanes hardly ever crash (坠毁) and that the bouncing is called turbulence (气流). I even considered taking some interesting things onto the plane to take my mind off the fear. And that’s just what I did before I flew to see my grandmother.
Favio
8:17 p.m. 16 Mar.
It all started when lightning struck a big tree right next to my house. After that, lightning made me sweat and shake.
I always wanted to go camping, so I decided to overcome the fear of lightning. First, I thought about how lightning is natural and I learned how lightning happens by reading books. Then, when they happened, I took deep breaths and pictured myself playing with my turtle in my favorite place. Gradually, I find I am no longer so afraid of lightning.
1.Did Franklin go to the animal shelter to meet a real dog?
2.Why did Favio decide to overcome the fear of lightning?
3.According to the passage, what did Franklin, Farah and Favio have in common when dealing with their own fears?
4.What is your fear in life? How will you overcome it? (about 30 words)

【答案】1.Yes, it can. 2.It helps us understand how people in other parts of the world think, feel and communicate with each other. 3.We prefer culture connectors. 4.Yes, I do. Because learning English helps us understand different cultures and communicate better with people from around the world, which is still valuable in the AI era. (言之有理即可)

3.根据第三段中“In the AI age, what we need are not just people who can use a language, but culture connectors.”可知,在人工智能时代,我们需要的不仅仅是能够使用语言的人,而是文化连接者。故填We prefer culture connectors.
4.开放性问题,言之有理即可。参考答案为Yes, I do. Because learning English helps us understand different cultures and communicate better with people from around the world, which is still valuable in the AI era.

(About 30 words)
【答案】1.No, it wasn’t. 2.54 kilograms. 3.Because of excessive stress, unhealthy habits and less attention to weight. 4.Yes, I will. Because being overweight may lead to health problems like heart disease and diabetes. Losing weight can help me stay energetic, feel confident, and live a healthier and happier life.
【导语】本文介绍了中国男性和女性的肥胖比例、BMI标准、导致男性更容易肥胖的原因以及地区差异,并强调了早期干预的重要性。
1.根据“Inner Mongolia (1.1 percent), Shandong (1.1 percent), and Hebei (36.6 percent) being the top three.”可知,山东的肥胖率为1.1%,河北为36.6%,因此河北的肥胖率低于山东。故填No, it wasn’t.
3.根据“men usually have to endure long-term excessive stress...Some men’s unhealthy habits...are also closely related to obesity...men are less likely to pay attention to their weight”可知,男性更容易肥胖的原因包括长期压力、不健康习惯以及较少关注体重。故填Because of excessive stress, unhealthy habits and less attention to weight.
4.本题为开放性问题,可结合健康意识、生活质量等方面回答,字数约30词。参考答案为Yes, I will. Because being overweight may lead to health problems like heart disease and diabetes. Losing weight can help me stay energetic, feel confident, and live a healthier and happier life.

I used to work for a state-owned company, having to clock in every morning and work from 9 to 5. As time went by, I could not stand the pressure of work anymore. Today, my identity is a climbing companion (陪爬) and I am known as “the top workhorse of Mount Tai”.
I still recall the day when I spent over 10 hours to accompany two tourists up the mountain. The job itself is laborious (耗时费力的) , but I never feel tired. In fact, I really enjoy my working condition, which makes my life free and easy.

【答案】1.Yes, he was. 2.To set out on their own pilgrimage (after pretending to be the famous characters from Journey to the West). 3.They both face great difficulties but never give up/hold on to their dreams. 4.My big dream is to become a doctor. I will study hard, keep learning new knowledge, and never give up even when I face difficulties.
【导语】本文通过动画电影《浪浪山小妖怪》和清华学子庞众望的真实经历,说明即使出身平凡、困难重重,只要坚持梦想、不“躺平”,普通人也能成为“大人物”。
1.第四段直接指出“Born into a poor family in Hebei”,这是原文直接信息,应肯定回答。
2.第二段指出四人离开浪浪山的原因“They leave Langlang Mountain to set out on their own pilgrimage”,结合前文“pretend to be the famous characters from Journey to the West”,整合为答案,为原文直接信息。
3.第三段指出“many ordinary people also choose to hold on to their dreams, even though they face great difficulties”,并将电影与现实中庞众望的经历相呼应。两者都是“nobody”在困境中坚持追梦。
4.本题为开放性试题,答案不唯一。需结合文章主题“坚持追梦”,表达自己的梦想及实现梦想的具体做法,言之成理即可。

【答案】1.Yes, he did. 2.Because he always wanted to go camping. 3.They all learned about the things they were afraid of and took active actions to face their fears, and finally overcame them. 4.My fear is of small insects. I will learn more about them from books and try to slowly get close to harmless ones to overcome it.
1.Franklin的帖子中明确提到“Finally, I felt ready to see a real dog, so I went to the animal shelter.”,这是原文直接给出的信息,因此答案是直接信息题。
2.Favio的帖子里提到“I always wanted to go camping, so I decided to overcome the fear of lightning.”,“想去露营”是他克服恐惧的直接原因,属于原文直接引述的信息。
