Theme: My learning experience     Alice     Last updated: 2 May     I used to feel nervous about having trouble doing my homework. To fix it, I tried out the“PomodoroTechnique”. Pomodoro is the Italian word for tomato. I used this technique to divide my homework into parts and set a 25-minute timer for each part. After each part, I took a short 5-minute one. After four parts, I took a longer break, about a quarter. Surprisingly, I finished my homework in less time.    Lee    Last updated: 5 April      One of my ways of remembering what I’ve learned is to make picture stories. For example, to remind me of the word“playful” I learned yesterday, I made a picture story for it: In the cold Arctic, there is a PLAYFUL polar bear named Ben. He had an excellent skiing skill.      Experts say that our brains work well with pictures.           Tom            Last updated: 18 March      Have you ever found it difficult to understand a concept(概念)? Well, I find it turns out to be much easier when I draw it out. Last week, my geography teacher gave us a lesson about the rotation and revolution of the Earth. Hi David, I really want to have a pet lizard because I think these animals are special and cool. But my mom is afraid of lizards and doesn’t want me to have one. What should I do? Jasper Hi Jasper, That’s a difficult one. Your mom can’t help being afraid of lizards. She might also worry about having to take care of it. Try to show her that you are ready to look after it on your own. This way, she won’t have to do anything. Write down everything you will do to give the lizard the care it needs, like feeding it and cleaning its tank. What about keeping it in your room? You can also try doing some more jobs around the house. Let your mom trust you with more difficult ones. Maybe you can learn more about lizards together to help her feel more comfortable about them. Sometimes, understanding more about something can make it less scary. You could also start with a small lizard to help her feel less afraid. Be patient and understanding of how she feels, and maybe over time, she’ll like the idea.           Good luck! David 1.What is Jasper’s main problem? A.He doesn’t know how to care for a lizard. He has bought a ticket for A River All Red. Here is the ticket and the leaflet he got before the show. A River All Red About the plot A River All Red is a story about a famous General Yue Fei (1103-1142) during the Southern Song Dynasty. When outside enemies attacked, Yue Fei led his army to fight for the country. During battles, Yue Fei always put himself in danger to protect his army. After many successful fights, he refused any prize or reward. He always said, “A general serves his country, not himself.” However, Official Qin Hui secretly planned with the enemy to destroy Yue Fei. He tried to make the emperor believe that Yue Fei was too powerful and dangerous. Though Yue Fei did nothing wrong, the emperor killed him in the end. Luckily, other generals still followed Yue Fei’s will and continued Yue Fei’s fight. At last they saved the country. About the actors Some of China’s leading Peking Opera actors and actresses play the main roles of this opera. For example, Yu Kuizhi plays Yue Fei. About the Peking Opera faces Actors in this show wear different colors and patterns on their faces to show the roles’ characters. Red faces mean being brave and faithful. A white face tells us a character is dishonest and good at using tricks to get what he wants. Blue or green faces are for brave soldiers, outlaws or fighters. They look very welcoming especially if the weather is coming in. Can I use them without permission? —David Dear David, The main aim of the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) is to keep simple shelters in faraway areas. These shelters are for anyone who loves wild and quiet places. Do you love such places? If you open the unlocked door of one of these buildings, you will find a shelter that keeps out the rain and wind. You can use it freely. There is no electricity or running water inside, but there is probably a fire or a small cooker. There may also be a few beds or simple platforms for sleeping. If you’re very lucky, someone might have left some coal or wood for you. If you’re even luckier, another hiker who wants to get out of the rain and sleep in a dry place tonight might still be there, tending a big fire and offering you a hot drink. There are more than 100 such shelters in Scotland, northern England and Wales. No two of them are the same. You don’t need to book a spot, and you don’t need to pay any money. You can just go there, and be ready to share the shelter with other people who come. Those shelters exist because MBA volunteers work very hard. You don’t have to pay, but you should tidy up after yourself—that’s like your “payment” for using the shelter. There are a few rules, also called “The Bothy Code”. All these rules are simple ways to show respect to the shelter, other visitors and the environment. They come from an agreement between the MBA and the people who own the land. You can find The Bothy Code on the MBA website or YouTube. Read it before you go. These bothies are very special to me. I have spent at least one night in every single one of them. They aren’t built fast to be bothies. Each one has a long history—its story started long before it became a shelter for hikers. They are part of our history. Next time you find an old house with a round mark on its door. Go into that house and talk to the strangers there. Now you’re part of those old stories. If you want to help make more stories, you can also be an MBA volunteer. Who knows? Maybe one day you’ll be someone who helps take care of a bothy. But for now, just start by opening the door of the bothy you find. Maybe you’ll start a whole new adventure! 1.How does the writer start the topic? A.By making a survey. B.By making a comparison. C.By listing a number. D.By asking a question. 2.What do people need to do when using the shelters? A.Book a spot in advance. B.Pay a small amount of money. C.Share with other visitors. D.Bring their own beds and coal. 3.What can we infer from the passage? A.People should keep the shelters clean. B.People should leave the food for others. C.People should tell stories to strangers. D.People should first be MBA volunteers. 4.In which section of a website can we read the passage? A.Environment. B.Travel. C.Literature. D.Fashion. Lisa likes keeping a diary very much. To understand the difference between them, I drew a picture. It’s really clear, isn’t it? Have a try! 1.What is the“Pomodoro Technique” according to Alice? A.Eating tomatoes while studying. B.Taking a break after studying for an hour. C.Doing homework without stopping. D.Dividing study time into parts with breaks. 2.Why did Lee make a picture story about a polar bear? A.To remember a new word. B.To show his drawing skills. C.To explain how polar bears ski. D.To describe his trip to the Arctic. 3.How does Tom suggest learning? A.Ask teachers to explain again. B.Create stories to remember words. C.Draw pictures to understand concepts. D.Use a timer to manage his study time. 1.Alice在分享中提到:“I used this technique to divide my homework into parts and set a 25-minute timer for each part. After each part, I took a short 5-minute one.”,因此“Pomodoro Technique”是将学习时间分成若干段,每段之间穿插短暂休息的方法。 2.Lee在分享中写道:“to remind me of the word ‘playful’ I learned yesterday, I made a picture story for it”,因此他创作关于北极熊的图画故事是为了帮助记忆一个新单词。 3.Tom在分享中提出:“I find it turns out to be much easier when I draw it out”,并以地理课画图理解地球自转与公转的区别为例,因此他的学习建议是通过画图来理解概念。 Hi David, I really want to have a pet lizard because I think these animals are special and cool. D.To encourage Jasper to be patient and understanding. 1.根据Jasper的来信“But my mom is afraid of lizards and doesn’t want me to have one.” 2.根据David的回信“She might also worry about having to take care of it.” 3.David给出了多项具体建议,最后强调“Be patient and understanding of how she feels”,核心目的是鼓励Jasper保持耐心、体谅妈妈的感受,逐步说服妈妈。 Discover the Power of Self-love & GrowthDo you feel stressed about school, friends, or just growing up? Jack, a 14-year-old British boy, has become interested in Peking Opera and the Traditional Chinese Culture Club in his school. The black face shows someone who is rude and brave, or someone who is fair and selfless. They are always fighting for fairness and bravely punish the powerful who are against the laws (法律). A white face tells us a character is dishonest and good at using tricks to get what he wants. Blue or green faces are for brave soldiers, outlaws or fighters. A silver face shows a character is a god or spirit. Experience history come to life! See A River All Red and be part of the story! 1.For what purpose does Jack most probably need to read the leaflet? D.How actors learned to perform Peking Opera. 根据“More information is provided on the leaflet to help you better understand the show!”和“About the plot... About the actor... About the Peking Opera faces”可知,传单里有关于演出剧情、演员、京剧脸谱等内容,阅读传单是为了让自己为欣赏这场演出做准备,更好地理解和融入演出。故选C。 2. 根据“Red faces mean being brave and faithful.”以及“A white face tells us a character is dishonest and good at using tricks to get what he wants.” 故选A。 3. A。 Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world. He was National Geographic’s 2018 Explorer of the Year. Question 1: How did you start working for National Geographic? My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one-day job. And that led to a nine-day job, and so on. Question 2: What does it take to become a National Geographic photographer? To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don’t have. It’s not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree. Question 3: ▲ It’s now more difficult to work for magazines. Technology (技术) makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is full of photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines that once paid for photographers and their photos. Question 4: What advice do you have for people who want to be photographers? Well, work hard. Be passionate (热诚的) about every project you work on. Take lots of pictures in different situations. Look at others’ photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about life. There’s something to photograph everywhere. But be a photographer for the right reasons. If you do it for the money, you probably won’t really be happy. Do you want to make the world a better place, or make people see things in a different way? If so, you’ll enjoy the work much more. 1.Which part of a magazine is the passage most probably taken from? A.Science Reports. B.People & Stories. C.Culture Reviews. D.The World This Week. 2.Which is the most suitable for ▲ ? A.What kind of photos are more popular today? B.What is the biggest challenge for magazines today? C.What kind of photographers are more popular today? D.What is the biggest challenge for photographers today? 3.What can we learn from the passage? A.Joel Sartore got that one-day job because the readers enjoyed his photos. B.Joel Sartore advises photographers to teach others by their own examples. C.Some National Geographic photographers are also masters in other fields. D.Joel Sartore thinks that happiness is the most important for photographers. 根据下文“It’s now more difficult to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is full of photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines that once paid for photographers and their photos.” 根据“To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don’t have. It’s not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree.” C。 Join Us for an Exploration (探索) of Chinese Arts! D.Fashion. 根据“Do you love such places?” 根据“You can just go there, and be ready to share the shelter with other people who come.” 根据“you should tidy up after yourself—that’s like your ‘payment’ for using the shelter”可知,人们应保持避难所整洁,故选A。 4. 根据“When hiking in Scotland” “shelters for hikers”可知,文章与徒步旅行相关,可在旅行板块读到,故选B。
