This week we learned about pollution. I never knew that rubbish was so interesting.
On Tuesday, all of our classmates cleaned up the school yard. We took bags and picked up bottles, paper and other rubbish. It was great to see everyone working together.
Later that day, Brian, Danny and I went for a walk around our neighbourhood. When we saw rubbish, we picked it up. Danny found a used toy car with one broken wheel. He took it home, cleaned it and fixed it by himself.
On Wednesday, we sorted our school’s rubbish correctly. We put on gloves and divided the rubbish into different kinds: glass, metal, plastic, paper and everything else. Most of the rubbish was paper. People wasted a lot of paper! There was less plastic than paper and more plastic than metal. There was the least amount of glass.
Today is the fourth day. Danny made a car out of rubbish! He used a big box for the body and pieces of wood for the seats. It was great!
Later this month, we will go on a class trip to the city rubbish center. Thousands of tons of rubbish are sent there every day. We will see the workers sort all of our rubbish. Rubbish is harmful to our environment. I am only one person, but if I do my part, the earth will become a cleaner and safer place. If each of us does something for the environment, all of us will have a better life. Let’s take action from now on!

One evening, I went to the supermarket to buy something to eat. When I was about to go to the checkout to pay, I immediately sensed that something unusual was happening there. My curiosity led me to take a closer look. There, I saw a cashier taking some goods out of a customer’s shopping bag. The customer was an elderly woman who looked very sad and worried.
It turned out that the cashier was removing goods to lower the total cost. This touched my heart, and I felt a strong wish to help.
I quickly walked over to the cash register (收银机). Without saying a word, I pointed to the goods the cashier was about to take out. Then I pointed to my own shopping bag to show that I would pay for them. The cashier nodded and put the goods back into the elderly woman’s bag.
The cashier then tried to help the woman with her card again, but it still didn’t work. Seeing the total amount on the screen, I quietly took out some cash from my wallet and handed it to the cashier. I wanted to help without drawing attention to myself, so I quickly walked away after paying.
The elderly woman was too worried about her card to notice me. When the cashier told her that she didn’t have to pay anything, she looked confused (困惑的).

My grandmother was a wonderful old lady. When I was ten, she moved from her farm to live with us in the town—she could no longer stay there alone.
At first, Grandmother felt lonely and uncomfortable. She wasn’t used to the traffic noises and deeply missed the peace of farm life.
When spring came with warm winds, Grandmother said she wanted to plant a small garden. My father told her we didn’t need to grow food since we could buy everything. But she insisted, “I’ve always had a garden, and I want one here.” She asked me to help work the land, and I happily agreed.
Early in spring, she taught me to start seeds in indoor containers (容器). We planted cabbages, tomatoes, and carrots. I watered the seeds carefully every day, and soon green sprouts came out. When the weather got warm enough, we moved the seedlings to the garden in neat rows. Grandmother smiled and said, “In a month, we’ll have fresh vegetables.”
When harvest (收获) time arrived, she loved serving our garden’s vegetables at meals. I felt proud to help care for the plants in the summer heat. Years later, those meals are still my happiest memories—not just for the fresh taste, but for the priceless time I spent with Grandmother in her beloved garden.

On 24 December, 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke got on a plane with her mother in Lima, Peru, to fly to another city to meet her father.
Over the Amazon rainforest, there was a thunderstorm. The rain fell heavily and there was a strong wind. And then lightning hit the plane at 3,000 meters, and it exploded (爆炸). Juliane fell quickly through the air in her seat and hit the trees hard. For three hours she was unconscious. When she woke up, her right arm was cut, her shoulder hurt badly and she couldn’t see in one eye. She was alone. But she was alive!

“See you at Open House tonight, Amy!” Evelyn shouted from the bus. “Don’t forget to ask your mom if I can come over tomorrow!”
“OK!” I called back. I wished I could feel excited, but I was worried. What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear? I wanted Evelyn to visit, but then she’d see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone for sign language, and we have a light that flashes when the doorbell rings. Would Evelyn think it strange?
That night at the brightly lit school, we stopped at the bulletin board (公告板). “Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said loudly. She does that when she’s excited because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids stared, and I wanted to hide.
I led my family into my classroom. I didn’t see Evelyn. Ms. Jennings walked over. I introduced my parents and mentioned they’re deaf.
“Oh,” she said. “How do you say ‘Welcome’ in sign language?”
I showed her, sweeping my hand. She repeated it.
“Thank you,” Mom said, smiling.
Ms. Jennings looked surprised. “You speak very well.”
Mom nodded. “I lost my hearing as a child after learning to talk. Amy’s father was born deaf. He can talk too, but he’s shy about his voice.” Dad smiled.
Some classmates were watching. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom by the door. I quickly walked to my desk.
“Hi, Amy,” Evelyn said. “I didn’t know your parents were deaf.”
“Yeah.”
“And you can talk to them with your hands? That’s so cool.”

I was coming home from school on the bus when I got a text message from Mike. It was very short: Mkt X7. UGNT. We’d planned to meet after school on Friday to prepare for our birdwatching as usual.
Let me give you some background. My name’s Don. I’m fifteen and I go to Blueway Comprehensive School. Mike is the same age and goes to the local grammar school, but we’ve been friends since junior school. We’ve been birdwatching together since we were 11. We do it every week. We read about it and use the Internet to learn about birds, and we’re members of a club for birdwatchers, too.
At 6:45 I walked to Market Cross. Soon I saw him standing on the side of the road.
“Hi, Mike. What’s this about?” I asked at once.
“Just wait a moment until we’re away from the crowd and I’ll tell you,” he answered mysteriously (神秘地). We walked over to the yard and sat on a bench.
“After this week of good weather followed by last night’s storm, I thought there might be some good birds about,” he said.
“And were there?” I asked. A smile played over Mike’s face. “Yes, osprey (鱼鹰).” He said very quietly. “What!?” I shouted. “Osprey, and we’d better keep it secret.” he said again. I sat looking at him with my mouth open.
I should explain. An osprey is a big hunting bird, which catches fish. There weren’t any in Britain because they’d been hunted too much. In 1954 a pair nested in Scotland. They were protected by society because lots of people wanted osprey eggs for their collections. We’ve never seen one in our village.
Mike continued, “So, shall we go birdwatching tomorrow morning?”
“But do you think it’ll be there?” I asked.
“Birdwatcher!” he said. By which he meant that if I was a birdwatcher, I should know that nobody could say what a bird would or wouldn’t do at a particular (特别的) time.
“So, are you coming?”
“Oh…oh…all right.” I said, knowing my parents would be very angry. They thought I spent too much time birdwatching.

“Did you even hear my question, Lucho?” asked Mr Parra.
The students at the front of the class turned round to watch the show. They were all smiling. Eva Villa had turned to watch too, but she wasn’t smiling. For a moment Eva looked straight into Lucho’s dark sad eyes and he could feel his face turning bright red. Then she turned back to the front and said something to the girl sitting next to her. The girl laughed.
Mr Parra walked towards Lucho’s desk. Lucho liked Mr Parra, although he didn’t like history class. There was too much information to remember.
“Maybe you could tell us what I have been talking about for the last twenty minutes, Lucho, while you were looking out of the window,” said Mr Parra.
Lucho’s heart felt heavy. He had no idea what to say. He looked down at his history textbook. The page was about “The stolen past” and there was a photograph of a gold object that looked very old. Next, he looked quickly at the board and saw one of Mr Parra’s favourite things: a mind map. Every time they had to write about something for homework, Mr Parra asked them to make a mind map.
The mind map had four empty circles joined by four lines to a bigger circle in the centre. In the centre circle Mr Parra had written the word “guaca”. Lucho tried to remember where he had heard the word before.
They were all waiting. Lucho looked out of the window for a second and saw a little yellow bird. Yes, that was it! Guaca was a word that his grandmother had used, but what did it mean? The class was still waiting for him to speak. Suddenly he heard the little yellow bird singing in the tree outside and he opened his mouth.
“We were talking about guaca, sir,” he answered.
“And what is guaca, Lucho?” Mr Parra asked.
“Guaca means ‘special object’. An antique object that was made by South American tribes, usually from gold, sir.”
Mr Parra looked surprised. He hadn’t expected Lucho to know the answer.
The girl next to Eva turned to look at Lucho again. The rest of Lucho’s classmates had lost interest. Lucho felt better, but Mr Parra hadn’t finished with him yet.
“That’s correct, Lucho,” said Mr Parra. “And what is today’s homework?”

I love college and I love you for sending me here. I’m very, very happy, and so excited every moment of the time that I can hardly sleep. You can’t imagine how different it is from the John Grier Home. I never dreamed there was such a place in the world. I’m feeling sorry for everybody who isn’t a girl and the girls who can’t come here. I am sure the college you attended when you were a boy wasn’t so nice.
My room is up in a tower that used to be the ward (病房) before the new hospital was built. There are three other girls on the same floor of the tower—an older girl who wears glasses and is always asking us to be a little quieter, and two new students named Sallie and Julia. Sallie has red hair and a turned-up nose and is quite friendly; Julia comes from one of the first families in New York and hasn’t known me yet.
Sallie and Julia live in one room. The older girl and I have single rooms. Usually new students can’t get this kind of room. They are very rare, but I got one without even asking. I suppose the registrar (教务主任) didn’t think it would be right to ask a well-raised child like the older girl to share a room with a foundling (弃婴). You see, there are advantages!
The room with the name “Jerusha Abbott” on the door is mine. It is on the north-west corner with two windows and a view. After I have lived in a ward for eighteen years with twenty roommates, it is quiet and calm for me to be alone. I think I’m going to like the life here.
1.From the first paragraph, we know that the college is ________.
A.the same as the John Grier Home B.a great place for the writer to stay
C.a place where the writer wants to leave D.a wonderful place only for boys
2.Which of the following is the right order according to the story?
① I moved into a single room in the tower.
② Jerusha Abbott felt so happy and excited that she could hardly sleep.
③ I became neighbours with three other girls on my floor.
④ Jerusha Abbott lived in a ward with twenty roommates for eighteen years.
A.①④③② B.②③①④ C.④②①③ D.④①③②
3.What does the underlined word “They” in the third paragraph refer to?
A.New students. B.Single rooms. C.The registrars. D.Younger girls.
4.What can we infer (推测) from the passage?
A.The writer used to be a foundling. B.The writer has never lived in a ward.
C.The older girl comes from a poor family. D.Jerusha Abbott is one of the writer’s friends.
One morning in autumn, I visited my friend Sherlock Holmes at his home on Baker Street. I found him talking with a visitor—a large man with a kind, red face and red hair. When I walked in, the visitor stood up quickly to leave.
“Please don’t go on my account,” I said.
“No, Dr. Watson, please stay,” said Holmes. “This is Dr. James Mortimer. Dr. Mortimer, this is my friend Dr. Watson, who helps me with many cases.”
After Dr. Mortimer left, Holmes picked up a walking stick the visitor had forgotten. He smiled and handed it to me. “Well, Watson, look at this stick. What can you tell me about the man who owns it? Let’s hear your ideas before I tell you mine.”
I took the stick. It was a good, strong piece of wood. Near the top was a wide silver ring. Words were cut into the silver: “To James Mortimer, from his friends at the hospital. 1884.” I thought for a moment.
“It seems Dr. Mortimer is a country doctor,” I said. “He is probably older and successful. His friends gave him this stick years ago, so he must be well-liked.”
“Good!” said Holmes. “You see some things. But look closer. Do you see these marks here?” He pointed to some lines on the stick.
“They look like...bite marks?” I asked.
Exactly! They are teeth marks from a dog. The marks are deep, so the dog had strong jaws—a big dog. But the marks are not very deep all around, so the dog was playing, not fighting. The doctor has a large, friendly dog, I think.”
I was surprised. I had not noticed the marks at all.
Holmes continued. “Now, the words on the silver ring tell us he got this stick when he finished his studies in 1884. It is now many years later, but the stick is still in good condition. If he walked very long distances every day, the stick would be more worn. So, he is a country doctor who visits patients nearby or uses a horse for long trips.”
“What else?” I asked, feeling impressed.
“He forgot his stick,” said Holmes. “A man does not forget something he uses every day unless he is thinking very hard about something else. He seemed nervous when he left. I believe he came to ask for my help with a strange and serious problem. He saw you, a stranger, and decided to leave and think about it more.”
Just then, the door opened. Dr. Mortimer came back in, looking worried.
“I am so sorry,” he said. “I forgot my walking stick.”
“Of course,” said Holmes, giving it to him. “I hope your dog is well, Doctor?”
Dr. Mortimer’s eyes opened wide. “How did you know about my dog? He is at home today!”
“Your stick told me,” said Holmes calmly. “Now, I think you came back not only for the stick, but because you want to talk about your problem. Please, sit down. Tell us your story from the beginning.”
Dr. Mortimer sat down and began to tell a strange and frightening story about a family named Baskerville and a mysterious death on the moors—a case that would become one of our most famous adventures together.
1.What was the main clue Holmes used to know about Dr. Mortimer’s dog?
A.The date “1884” on the stick. B.The words “from his friends.”
C.The bite marks on the walking stick. D.The doctor’s wide silver ring.
2.What did Holmes think about how Dr. Mortimer traveled for work?
A.He walked very long distances every day. B.He might use a horse for long visits.
C.He only visits patients far away. D.He took a train for a long trip.
3.Why did Holmes think Dr. Mortimer had a serious problem?
A.Because Dr. Mortimer looked very rich and had a wide silver ring.
B.Because Dr. Mortimer forgot his stick and seemed nervous.
C.Because Dr. Mortimer’s stick was bitten by his dog.

Chen Yuanchun is a teacher at a rural (乡村的) primary school in Cangyuan, Yunnan Province. The 44-year-old woman teaches Chinese, but she is very interested in computer technology (技术). She has introduced coding (编程) to her students as an important information technology skill.
Chen’s connection to coding began in November 2020. She became one of the first teachers in Cangyuan to take training courses on coding. The training was challenging for a beginner like Chen. She needed to learn how to tell a machine to perform (执行) actions and finish tasks through different orders. She worked very hard because she believed this skill would be useful for her students.
After the training, Chen started a new group in her school to teach the students coding, but some parents didn’t agree with her plan. They didn’t understand what coding was and thought Chen was teaching their children to play video games on the computer.
So, Chen could only teach students of her own class at first. For teens, coding does not include writing difficult coding languages. Instead, Chen taught them how to create interesting cartoons and games.
After only one term, every student was able to create something through coding. Learning coding also helped them become more creative and improved their problem-solving skills.
Soon, coding classes became popular in schools all over Cangyuan. Some students even won prizes in a national competition last year.

Hello there! I’m one of the Unitree G1 humanoid robots. Let me tell you my story, straight from my own metal-and-motor heart.
________ Since day one, engineers at Unitree dreamed big: robots that could balance, sprint, leap and adapt. They gave me LiDAR, depth cameras and advanced motion control systems, and taught me how to stand firm, walk steadily, and finally dance.
Robots like me practised hard before the night of 16 February, when hundreds of millions tuned in to watch the 2026 Spring Festival Gala.
Then came the moment. I stepped onto one of the world’s brightest stages, right on cue with my fellow robots, we were there to perform.
At one point, I leapt into the air and flipped before landing squarely on my feet. The audience watched in awe before breaking into applause. Some of us even performed moves inspired by kung fu—all while children shared the stage with us.
At one dramatic moment, one of us suddenly fell flat on his back. Just as the audience began to wonder what was happening, he rose smoothly to his feet. It turned out to be a trick—a classic drunken boxing move.
Last year, robots first appeared at the Spring Festival Gala, twirling handkerchiefs and performing simple movements. We’ve improved a lot since then!
Videos of this year’s show have gone viral online. People replay the flips. They slow down the kicks. “It looks like something straight out of a sci-fi film,” one comment reads. At the same time, they ask, “What will robots do next?”
That question excites me. Because the gala stage is only the beginning. In the future, robots like me may work in places where people need extra hands, such as care settings and disaster zones.
And of course, some of us may remain in entertainment and education— performing, teaching, inspiring curiosity in children who look at us and think, “I want to build something like that one day.”
The gala was my debut. The future is my next stage. And I am ready to step forward.
1.Which of the following fits best in the ________?
A.I wasn’t built to sit quietly on a shelf.
B.I was created in a large factory in China.
C.People often believe robots are only cold machines.
D.Many robots are built for display rather than action.
2.The drunken boxing move was designed to ________.
A.test whether the robot could recover from a fall B.create a surprising moment for the audience
C.show the robot’s control over its movements D.introduce the robot’s new performance style
3.How does the writer show the robots’ progress?
A.By giving detailed numbers about their training. B.By comparing this year’s show with last year’s.
C.By describing their appearance in a scientific way. D.By explaining how engineers improved the robots.
4.Why does the writer tell the story in the first person?
A.To explain technical details more clearly. B.To make the story more personal and lively.
C.To show how robots are controlled. D.To present the gala in a relaxed tone.

The cashier then tried to help the woman with her card again, but it still didn’t work. Seeing the total amount on the screen, I quietly took out some cash from my wallet and handed it to the cashier. I wanted to help without drawing attention to myself, so I quickly walked away after paying.

I was coming home from school on the bus when I got a text message from Mike. It was very short: Mkt X7. UGNT. I knew it meant he wanted to meet me at the Market Cross at 7 o’clock that evening and it was something urgent (紧急的). It was a bit unusual.

Having worked in a nature reserve (保护区) for 30 years, Hou Tiguo has developed a special ability—he can tell what kind of birds are around simply by their calls. “I can also tell whether they are happy or unhappy,” he added with a big smile.
The 52-year-old’s home, Baihualing, a village in Yunnan province, is well-known for different kinds of birds. He recalled, “In the 1970s, people were so poor. Birds were often chosen as food, so almost all the children including me in the village were good at using slingshots (弹弓).”
His life changed in 1989 when a couple hiking through the mountains visited Baihualing. They asked him to be their guide and lead them to good bird-watching spots. He said, “That was the first time I had made money from birds without killing them.”
Inspired by that, the villagers built a reserve to feed birds and protect the living places of birds. In the following ten years, ________. The village became a popular choice for bird lovers, and most villagers have turned into bird protectors and taken part in serving bird-loving tourists.
In the village, there are more than 60 “bird guides” like Hou. More than 20 guesthouses which have hosted visitors from more than 100 countries bring in a total income of 1.5 million yuan every year. “During the peak season, I serve nearly 100 tourists a day.
Homework? Lucho hadn’t heard Mr Parra talk about homework. He looked at the mind map on the blackboard again. Outside, the bird had stopped singing.
1.What did Mr Parra draw on the blackboard?
A. B. C. D.
2.When Lucho’s heart felt heavy, he probably felt a sense of ________.
A.peace B.pity C.hope D.shame
3.What is the best title for this story?
A.A Strict Teacher B.The Yellow Bird C.A Special Object D.The Mind Map
根据“The mind map had four empty circles joined by four lines to a bigger circle in the centre.”可知,思维导图有四个空的圆圈,中间有一个更大的圆圈,由四条线连接在一起。与选项C相符。故选C。
2.推理判断题。根据“Maybe you could tell us what I have been talking about for the last twenty minutes, Lucho, while you were looking out of the window,”及“Lucho’s heart felt heavy. He had no idea what to say.”
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.B 4.A
根据第一段“I love college…I’m very, very happy…You can’t imagine how different it is from the John Grier Home.”可知,作者非常热爱大学生活,甚至高兴得睡不着觉,这对她来说是一个很好的地方。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据“After I have lived in a ward for eighteen years”可知,作者过去在病房住了18年,这是故事背景;根据“I love college…I’m very, very happy” 可知,作者来到大学后感到非常快乐和兴奋;根据“My room is up in a tower”以及“The older girl and I have single rooms”可知,作者随后描述了自己住进了塔楼的单人房;根据“There are three other girls on the same floor”可知,她因此与同楼层的其他女孩成为了邻居。故正确顺序为④-②-①-③。故选C。
3.词句猜测题。根据“The older girl and I have single rooms. Usually new students can’t get this kind of room. They are very rare, but I got one without even asking.”可知,通常新生无法申请到这种房间(指单人房),它们非常稀有。因此“They”指代的是上文提到的“Single rooms”。故选B。
4.推理判断题。根据“I suppose the registrar (教务主任) didn’t think it would be right to ask a well-raised child like the older girl to share a room with a foundling (弃婴).”可知,作者认为教务主任是为了避免让家教好的女孩和弃婴同住才给她分配了单间,此处“foundling”指代作者自己;且根据“The room with the name ‘Jerusha Abbott’ on the door is mine.”可知,此处确认作者就是Jerusha Abbott。故可推断作者曾经是一名弃婴。故选A。
D.Because Dr. Mortimer’s dog was ill.
4.What is the main purpose of this story?
A.To describe how to solve the case.
B.To show how Holmes uses observation to learn about people.
C.To tell a funny story about Dr. Mortimer and his dog.
D.To explain what serious problem a country doctor had.

“I will work harder and hope these children in mountain areas will have a better future by learning information technology,” Chen said.
