Early in the morning, Luo Mingliang packs some vegetables into a bamboo basket and leaves his home in Shichuan, a small town in the hills of Chongqing. After two hours and two subway rides, he reaches his stall (货摊) inside Hongtudi Station. This place used to be a bomb shelter (防空洞) from World War II, but now it’s one of Chongqing’s most unconventional markets.
“The tunnels stay cool in summer and warm in winter,” Luo says with a smile, standing behind a large wooden box that is already half-empty.“I make over 500 yuan a day here, and my vegetables sell out in just an hour.”
This market is part of Chongqing’s “shelter plus” project, which turns old wartime shelters into useful spaces for modern life. In May 2024, the government changed this 700-square-meter shelter into a free market for farmers and small sellers. They added lights, better air flow, and smooth concrete (混凝土) floors, which attracts lots of customers.
“Zero fees—no rent, no cleaning costs,” says Zuo Le, who manages the underground market.“What was once a forgotten bunker (地堡) is now a busy place for the community.”
Hongtudi is just one of thousands of bomb shelters built in Chongqing during the war. From 1938 to 1943, Japanese planes bombed the city, so people dug shelters into the rocky hills. By 1942, there were over 1,600 shelters, protecting almost everyone in the city.
Though the war ended long ago, many of these shelters are still kept well and finding new purposes. Some have been turned into bookstores, museums, gas stations, and even hotpot restaurants.
“More than 80 years ago, these shelters protected local people when their lives were in danger,” says Luo Zibai, a tourism expert. “Now, they continue to serve the city in new ways, while standing as a lasting reminder for us to value peace.”
1.What does the underlined word“unconventional” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Traditional. B.Expensive. C.Unusual. D.Old.
2.What can we learn about Luo Mingliang’s business in the shelter?
A.He tries to sell vegetables as early as possible.
B.The environment helps him sell his vegetables.
C.He makes more money than others in the free market.
D.He has to rent the stall at a high price every day.
3.What does Zuo Le mean by saying “What was once a forgotten bunker is now a busy place for the community”?
A.The bunker is still not used by anyone.
B.The community doesn’t like the new market.
C.The old shelter has become active and useful again.
D.The market is busy because of zero fees.
4.What is Luo Zibai’s attitude towards the reuse of bomb shelters?
A.Doubtful. B.Worried. C.Uncertain. D.Supportive.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 4.D

Imagine a robot. What comes to your mind first? A machine stronger than the human body? However, this same quality is now causing a big problem—it’s creating tons of long-lasting e-waste that could flood our planet. What if, instead, the machines we use were designed to break down and disappear—just as living things do?
For a study published in Science Advances, researchers made a robotic arm and a controller using materials from animals and plants. These materials are strong enough to work but can easily break down in a natural environment. After testing, both parts were gone in soil within weeks.
Biodegradable (可生物降解的) robotics often falls under the umbrella of soft robotics, which takes ideas from nature. “This field started in materials science and chemistry rather than traditional robots that come from mechanical (机械的) engineering,” says Florian Hartmann, a materials scientist from Germany. However, many early soft robotics models still used man-made materials that cause pollution.
Wei, a scientist who studies natural materials in Hangzhou, worked together with his friend Zhang, a robotics engineer in Shanghai, to build robots for the new study. They started with cellulose (纤维素) taken from cotton. Then, they added glycerol (甘油) to make a new material that is soft and easy to change shapes. After that they allowed it to dry so it became strong, “Cellulose is cheap and easy to work with,” says Wei. They found that the controller and the robotic arm stood up to both heavy use and a week of inactivity (不工作). Finally, they buried (埋) them both in a hole. ▲
Wei and Zhang expect that robots like these can be used to deal with dangerous waste and then disappear naturally. They also hope that such robots can help doctors in operations and then safely break down inside the body.
However, it’s important to note that the technology is still in very early stages. “If we truly want to have a biodegradable robot,” Hartmann says, “we also need to make sure its electronics and power parts are biodegradable.”
1.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By listing numbers. B.By telling stories. C.By raising questions. D.By comparing facts.
2.What is special about the robotic arm and the controller in Paragraph 2?
A.They are green. B.They are hard. C.They are talented. D.They are cheap.

B.But these two parts could not break down underground.
C.Researchers are still thinking about how to solve the problem.
D.Within eight weeks these two parts were almost completely gone.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Soft robots are widely used to clean up e-waste.
B.Soft robots have to rest for a week after heavy use.
C.The designing of soft robots borrows ideas from nature.
D.Mechanical engineering offers new ways to run soft robots.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.C

This summer, “picking wild mushrooms on Cangshan Mountain in Dali” has become a hot online trend, attracting a large number of tourists.
During the summer holidays, many short videos and photos about “picking mushrooms in Dali” became very popular on platforms like Douyin and Xiaohongshu. These posts showed people picking mushrooms and taking pictures. Some people even charged money (from twenty to two hundred yuan per person and kids who are under 6 years old are free) to guide tourists, providing tools or even helping them cook the mushrooms.
On Sunday, the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture government announced, “We will check the area carefully and do not allow any illegal (非法的) activities or mushroom-picking that is harmful to the environment.”
In Yanghe village, some forests that were once full of plants have been walked on so much that the ground is now bare (光秃秃的). Environmental volunteers and experts say that careless mushroom picking has already damaged the natural ecosystem (生态系统).
Wang Bin, an environmental volunteer, explained, “When people dig through the ground, the mycelium (菌丝) is exposed to sunlight and dies. Then, it cannot grow back or produce more mushrooms in the future.” Experts also say that if the mushrooms’ growing environment is destroyed, it could take 5 to 10 years for them to return.
Wild mushrooms are very important because they help break down tough materials like lignin (木质素) in dead leaves and branches. They also help other plants and fungi (真菌) grow. Mushrooms are food for insects and small animals.
Experts said, “Mushrooms are decomposers. Without them, dead plants in the forest cannot rot (腐烂) easily, and trees may get sick more easily.”
Now, because low-altitude mushrooms are becoming rare, people are going higher up the mountain. Some even enter restricted nature reserves (保护区). The government says they will punish illegal activities.

A new study has found that including climate impact labels (标签) on a fast food menu influenced participants’ food choices in favor of more climate-friendly items.
Study lead author Julia Wolfson, associate professor in the Department of International Health at the Bloomberg School and her co-authors wanted to test how labeling climate change impacts of fast-food menu items might lead people to choose less red meat. Eating too much red meat has been linked to many health problems. Eating less red meat would also help lower greenhouse gas emissions (排放).
More than 5,000 participants were shown a sample menu and asked to choose a single item for dinner. One group of participants received a menu with non-red meat items such as chicken sandwiches labeled “low climate impact”. Another group received a menu with red meat items-burgers labeled “high climate impact”. A third control group received menus without climate labels.
Both the high and low climate impact labels markedly reduced red meat choices compared to the control group. Menus with a high climate impact label on burgers increased non-beef choices by 23 percent compared to the control group. Menus that included low climate impact labels increased non-beef choices, such as a chicken sandwich or a salad, by about 10 percent more participants than those in the control group. “These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable (可持续的) food choices in a fast food setting”, says Wolfson.
While encouraging on the whole, the results suggest that positive “low climate impact” labels are less effective in encouraging sustainable food choices compared to “high climate impact” labels. At the same time, climate labels may have the unwanted side effect of making a choice seem healthier than it actually is.
“An undeserved health halo (光环) given to unhealthy menu items could encourage people to overeat them.” Wolfson says, “So we have to look for labeling strategies that create ‘win-wins’ for encouraging both more sustainable and healthy choices.”

Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia, near Afghanistan and Iran. In Darvaza, one of its villages, there is a very interesting feature. It is a huge hole in the ground—about 20 metres (65 feet) deep and 60 metres (196 feet) across. The enormous pit (坑) has been on fire for more than 50 years.
Why is the crater (坑) on fire? The most popular theory is that in 1971, a team of geologists from the then-Soviet Union were drilling in the country’s Karakum Desert to try to find gas. The ground under the drill collapsed and methane (甲烷) gas began to escape into the air. The geologists decided the safest thing to do was to burn off the gas by lighting it on fire. They thought the fire would burn for only a few weeks. However, it has been burning for more than 50 years.
According to a BBC article, Canadian explorer George Kourounis discovered in 2013 that “no one actually knows how this came to be”. But, now the fire in the crater may finally come to an end.
Turkmenistan’s president, Mr. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, has asked scientists in the country to figure out how to put out the burning crater. He went on the country’s state-run television station on January 8 to encourage experts to find a way to stop the fire.
One of the reasons he wants the crater to be put out is that the country can collect the gas that fuels (为……提供燃料) it. Gas is a very important and valuable resource and can be used for many purposes. If it’s just burning off, the gas cannot be used or sold. According to the website Vice.com, the crater sits on the fourth largest reserve of natural gas in the world. Another reason the president may want the crater put out is to stop the harmful effects, to humans and the environment, of the burning gas.
1.Why did the geologists light the crater?
A.To test the quality of the gas.
B.To burn off the underground gas.
C.To prevent explosion of the gas.
D.To stop the escape of the gas.
2.What does Turkmenistan’s president mainly hope to achieve by putting out the crater?
A.To protect the crater. B.To find the reason for the fire.
C.To seek help from the public. D.To make full use of the gas.
3.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Fire Crater May Soon Be Put Out
B.A Peculiar Scenic Spot in Turkmenistan
C.The Crater Burning for Fifty Years
D.The Harmful Effects of the Burning Gas
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A

Do you have a long list of hobbies that light you up but find it hard to balance them all? You’re not alone! The real challenge isn’t having too many hobbies, but rather how you manage them. In this passage, we’ll share how to enjoy all your hobbies without burning yourself out.
●Focus on what you enjoy now.
It’s not easy to follow every hobby at the same time. The key is to focus on the hobbies that can bring you the most joy and energy right now. For example, maybe this month you’re excited about photography, but next month, you might want to try cooking. By changing hobbies based on what excites you, you’ll stay interested and avoid burnout.
●Set a flexible schedule (灵活的时间表).
A flexible schedule helps you stay organized without adding pressure. You can create time blocks, such as one evening for drawing and another for guitar practice. But remember to use your hobby schedule as a guide, not a strict rule. If one hobby catches your attention more than the others, feel free to give it more time.
● ▲
Why not get creative and combine your hobbies when possible? Some activities naturally go well together, allowing you to enjoy many interests. For example, if you love being outdoors and photography, take your camera with you when you go out. By doing this, you can enjoy the best of both worlds while keeping things fresh and exciting.
●Perfection is not necessary.
When you have many interests, it’s easy to feel pressure to be good at all of them. But here’s the thing: hobbies are meant to be enjoyable, not stressful! You don’t need to be a professional artist, chef, or writer to benefit from your hobbies. Focus on the learning process and let go of the need to be perfect. It’s okay to be "just okay” at some things—what matters most is that they bring you joy.
1.What is the real challenge for people with too many hobbies?
A.Managing hobbies well. B.Deciding which hobby to give up.
C.Finding enough money for each hobby. D.Choosing which hobby to begin with.

Carl Behnke, a food safety expert at Purdue University, had long been curious about the actual cleanliness of his reusable water bottle. He put paper towels into the bottle and, upon pulling them out, was shocked to see how dirty they turned out to be. This inspired him to design a study. Behnke and his workmates stopped passers-by along a road at Purdue University and asked if they would be happy to lend their water bottles to them as part of their research — to see how clean they were.
“One thing that stood out from the project was the number of people who didn’t want to know the results,” recalls Behnke. “Basically, they knew that their cleaning habits were poor, with some even hardly thinking about cleaning their bottles.”
Research shows that reusable water bottles can carry millions of bacteria (细菌). A study found that water in bottles used by adults went from about 75,000 bacteria per milliliter in the morning to over 1-2 million by the end of the day. Contamination (污染) often comes from the drinker’s hands, mouth, and the outside of the bottle. Those who don’t wash their hands regularly may introduce harmful germs like E. coli into their bottles. While most bacteria are harmless, they can put some people at risk, especially those with poor health.
Besides, drinks that have sugar can feed bacteria, making the situation worse. Although there is a small chance that we get serious illnesses from reusable bottles, it’s still important to keep good hygiene (卫生).
To cut down bacterial growth, it’s suggested to clean your water bottle regularly. Behnke’s research showed that people who used brushes or dishwashers had the lowest bacteria counts. People should clean their bottles with hot water and soap, letting the bottle sit under water for about ten minutes before washing. It’s important to let the bottle air-dry to prevent wetness buildup, which encourages bacteria. And proper handwashing before touching your clean bottle can also help cut down contamination.

B.They thought the study was necessary.
C.They were confident about the study results.
D.They were clear they didn’t take good care of their bottles.
3.What’s a suggested way to reduce bacteria growth?
A.Wiping with clean dry towels.
B.Washing hands regularly with soap.
C.Using brushes with hot soapy water.
D.Washing for about ten minutes each time.
4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

Viktor Frankl, the author of Man’s Search for Meaning, once wrote, “Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.” Frankl was right. Attitude is a choice. You could be faced with a thousand problems, many or most over which you have absolutely no control. However, there is always one thing you are in complete and absolute control of and that is your own attitude.
To be honest, it wasn’t until I was in my late 20s that I finally understood its full impact. All through my teens and into my early adult life, I can’t tell you the number of times that I heard, “Bob, if you’d just change your attitude, you would do a lot better.” At that time, I didn’t know what attitude was, let alone know how to change it!
Attitude and results are inseparable. They follow one another as night follows day. One is the cause, while the other, the result. There is a term we use to distinguish this “cause and effect” relationship, which is called the Law of Cause and Effect. Simply stated, if you think in negative terms, you will get negative results; if you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results. Some people always see wrong things in the world. These individuals are quick to blame circumstances or other people for their problems, rather than accepting responsibility for their life and their attitude. Thus, it would appear as if they were born with bad luck and it has followed them around their whole life. However, there are others who are forever winning and living the good life. They are the real movers and shakers who make things happen. They seem to go from one major accomplishment to another. They’re in control of their life. Their wins are a matter of choice.
You can experience that kind of life as well, you only need to decide. Dorothea Brande once said, “Act as if it were impossible to fail,” and I challenge you to do so. By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day, you will change your entire outlook. You have the power to choose an abundant life no matter what your circumstances are. Don’t wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you. Start today by working on your attitude and welcome the abundant life that you are meant to lead.
1.Why does the writer use the example of himself in Paragraph 2?
A.To prove attitude changes on its own.
B.To show attitude is important to the old.
C.To prove the author himself was very stubborn.
D.To show that understanding one’s attitude takes time.
2.What can we learn from the Law of Cause and Effect?
A.Luck and chance also play an incredibly important role in the results we get.
B.Our attitude plays an important role in determining the outcomes we experience.
C.Blaming external circumstances can actually bring benefits to our mental health.
D.Negative attitudes may occasionally bring positive results due to external factors.
3.What is the writer’s attitude towards those who believe in the power of positive mindsets (心态)?
A.Supportive. B.Objective.
C.Doubtful. D.Negative.

Learn the art of the Calligraphy
Calligraphy, which is also sometimes known as lettering, is the art of beautiful handwriting. It can also be a good way to lower stress because practicing calligraphy is a mindful exercise. More people are discovering the joys of this creative art. Here’s how you can get started.

Many of us may have experienced the pleasant moment of seeing recommended songs after we listened to some songs on a music app. When we open shopping websites, we often see things we want to buy on the home page. If you want to take a taxi on a taxi app, it can even guess where you want to go before you tell it! Aren’t these things amazing?
This is based on data (数据). Data is no longer only about numbers, but information from almost every side of our lives: our shopping habits, interests or what we eat. All of this is called “big data”. China is speeding up its big data strategy (策略) to better serve social and economic (经济) development. As a result, people’s lives can be improved as well. It is also expected that there will be greater use of big data in areas like education, social safety and medical treatment.
We have seen big data being used more often in China in the past few years. The use of it in tourism(旅游业) is just one example. Many travelers today like to share their experiences with others on the Internet. All the data that travelers share online is helping the tourism industry get a lot of information. After the data is analyzed (分析), these tour sights and service providers can better understand travelers’ needs. So services will be improved, which is helpful to the development of the whole industry. As a result, travelers can expect better tours in the future.
Moreover, big data is also an important growth tool for economic development. With a growth rate of 30 percent every year, sales of the big data industry in China will reach one trillion (万亿) yuan yearly by 2030. Usually, a lion is made up of two dancers. One dancer controls the head. The other controls the tail.
“I think of it as a sport,” says Anthony Huang, aged 16. He is a member of the New York Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club. Anthony performs as the lion’s head. It can weigh 20 pounds. Lion dancing is important to Anthony. “This tradition really lifts me up,” he says.
In the past, lion dancing was performed mostly by men. But it is different today. Lion Dance Me is a lion dancing group in San Francisco, California. There are boys and girls on its team. They dance together. “Anyone can take up lion dancing. You have to believe that you can do it,” says Ananda Tang-Lec, a 17-year-old girl.

1.How much should a family which includes a father, a mother and a child (5 years old) pay at least if they wanted to pick mushrooms?
A.40 yuan B.60 yuan C.300 yuan D.600 yuan
2.From Paragraph 3 we can know the government will ________.
A.take action against illegal mushroom picking B.allow guided tours in the whole area
C.encourage tourists to pick mushrooms D.help tourists cook mushrooms
3.What can we infer from what Wang Bin said?
A.Mushroom-picking is very safe. B.The ecosystem can recover quickly.
C.Digging is harmful to mushroom growth. D.Tourists know how to protect mushrooms.
4.According to the Paragraph 7, “decomposers” can ________.
A.eat hard living plants in the forests B.break down dead leaves and branches
C.grow in wet areas or under the dead plants D.produce food for insects and small animals
1.What’s the aim of the new study?
A.To encourage food choices without climate labels.
B.To decide the best method for labeling food products in general.
C.To discover the impact of climate labels on fast food choices.
D.To find out the connection between red meat and health problems.
2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The results of the study. B.The importance of the study.
C.The limitations of the study. D.The process of the study.
3.What side effect could climate labels cause?
A.They may cause confusion among consumers.
B.They may lead to an increase in vegetarian choices.
C.They might result in people consuming more red meat.
D.They could make a food item seem healthier than it is.

A.They actively helped with the study.
A. B. C. D.

C.Doubtful. D.Negative.
