13-year-old Sarah sits in her yard, laying out her handmade crafts on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative objects; they’re part of Sarah’s project to make a greener community.
Two years ago, Sarah would pass by a park near her house every day after school. Plastic bottles, empty cans, and broken toys littered the roadside. Seeing this, Sarah felt sad.
One afternoon, Sarah noticed some kids selling orange juice at the park. People stopped to buy it. That was when Sarah got an idea.
“Mom, what if we sell handmade crafts?” she asked excitedly that evening. “Then we can buy trees for our neighborhood with the money!”
With her mom’s help, Sarah started making crafts with great interest, using old boxes, plastic bottles and empty cans. Every day after school, she sat in her yard, waiting for customers. At first, no one came. Sarah felt down, but she didn’t give up.
Later, people began to stop by. A kind woman bought a cloth bag, saying it was perfect for shopping. Kids liked the flower pots, and one boy even asked Sarah to make him a special basket for his toys. By the end of the first month, Sarah had made $150! She bought 30 small trees. Together with her parents, they planted the trees around the park and along the sidewalks.
Now, the neighborhood looks nicer, and the birds have more places to rest. Sarah even teaches her friends how to make eco-friendly crafts after school. They organize sales every month to raise money for new projects like bird feeders.
This year, Sarah shared her story at a local community event. “Making a greener community is important,” she said proudly. “If everyone helps a little, we can make our life better.” She believes that no effort is too small when it comes to caring for the environment.

Most runners choose their routes (路线) based on distance or surface. Some pick smooth roads for steady speed, while others choose hills for a challenging workout. But for Lenny Maughan, running is more than fitness—it is also a way to make art.
Maughan, who calls himself a “human Etch A Sketch”, creates GPS drawings by running through the streets of San Francisco. He got the idea from apps that runners use to record their routes. “When I was a kid, I was known for drawing funny pictures of people. I had a real talent for it,” he said. “I forgot about it until a little over 10 years ago.”
Maughan begins by carefully mapping his design on a paper map of San Francisco. To find the route that works, he often needs to map out several different routes. His goal is to create clear images. Once the route is planned, Maughan runs his “masterpiece”, using a GPS app called Strava to track (追踪) his movement. However, Strava only shows the full image after the run is complete. That means Maughan has to follow his planned route very carefully. One wrong turn can badly influence the artwork. “You can’t see the drawing while you run,” Maughan explained. “So when you finish and finally see it come together, it’s a wonderful feeling.”
Over the past ten years, the San Francisco runner has created more than 50 images, from a simple heart to a lively pig. In February 2025, he spent 10 hours running 40 miles to create a snake in honor of the Lunar New Year. But his most famous creation is a line painting of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, completed in 2019. That image covered almost 29 miles and involved a lot of climbing.
“I like to say my legs are my paintbrush and San Francisco is my canvas,” said Maughan. “I love running and I love art. This is a nice way to combine them both.”
18. The author introduces the main character by ________.
A. comparing the facts B. raising an interest
C. providing background D. explaining a theory
19. How can Maughan successfully create an image from paragraph 3?
a.Follow the planned route carefully. b.Pick out the best route.
c.Map out several different routes. d.Make a wrong turn sometimes.
e.Finish the run and get the full image. f.Enjoy the wonderful feeling.
A. b → c → a → e B. c → b → d → e → f
C. c → b → a → e D. c → b → a → e → f
20. What does the underlined word “canvas” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. A place designed for smooth running. B. A material used for painting on.
C. A project combining running and art. D. A tool recording natural beauty.
21. What is Maughan’s best-known GPS artwork?
A. B.
C. D.

①Once, humanoid robots (仿人机器人) that act like people were only in sci-fi movies and our childhood dreams. But now, thanks to the hard work of engineers around the world, these robots are stepping out of stories and into real life. Let’s learn the interesting secrets of humanoid robots from engineers.
②Teaching robots to move smoothly is an important part of developing humanoid robots. First, engineers make detailed plans for the robots’ movements. They also write computer code to guide them to learn actions. Then, engineers test the robots’ movements in a computer-simulated (计算机模拟的) fake world. Only when the fake test goes well will they let the robots try in the real world. During this process, engineers repeat this whole process many times until the robots can move just as we want them to.
③Keeping balance is key for humanoid robots to act like humans. Engineers have a special training method: they let robots practice different actions again and again in a virtual world. They also set up a “reward and punishment system”—if a robot does well, it gets points as a reward; if it makes a mistake, like falling down, points are taken away. After a long time of training, robots slowly learn skills to keep balance and finally stand steadily without falling easily.
④Many people wonder how smart humanoid robots are. They have some advantages over humans: they can easily remember lots of information and learn languages fast, even smarter than college students in these areas. But simple things like holding a cup—easy for humans—are hard for robots. Engineers must teach them repeatedly. So robots aren’t as skilled as 1 or 2-year-olds and aren’t good at interacting with the real world.
⑤In the future, robots may work in dangerous places like space or disaster areas. They can also help in service jobs where there aren’t enough workers. But this will take a long time. In the next 1-2 years, robots might give people emotional support or join sports and shows. They’ll change from being fun to being helpful.
⑥Some people worry: if we give robots “thinking abilities”, will they become lazy or work hard? Engineers answer that it depends on how people train them. Take robot walking as an example. If people teach a robot to move slowly, it may walk lazily. But if people teach it to move quickly, it will become active and walk fast. That is to say, how robots learn and behave is totally influenced by how people teach them.
⑦From the “robot friends” in fantasy to the growing humanoid robots in reality, every step of progress depends on engineers’ exploration. In the future, with more technical breakthroughs, we believe humanoid robots will bring more surprises to our lives.
22. Why do engineers first test robots’ movements in a computer-simulated world?
A. Because the real world is too dangerous for robots.
B. To avoid possible mistakes and risks when testing in reality.
C. Because the computer-simulated world is more convenient for training.
D. To make robots remember more movement information quickly.
23. What can we know about the “reward and punishment system” for robots?
A. It helps robots learn balance skills more efficiently. B. It makes robots afraid of making mistakes.
C. It is only used when robots practice walking. D. It gives robots physical rewards for good performance.
24. Which structure is right for this passage?
A. B.
C. D.
25. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To explain why humanoid robots were only in sci-fi movies before.
B. To warn people about the risks of giving robots “thinking abilities”.
C. To introduce the development, current situation and future of humanoid robots.
D. To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of humanoid robots compared with humans.

In a village school in Hubei, teachers find that mobile phone addiction (瘾) has become a new problem among teenagers. Their students play games on mobile phones after returning home, and some of them don’t complete homework. When they’re in class, they still think about their games.
Pan Jiani, 11, likes watching funny short videos on the phone. Her parents are working in the city. Now she lives with her grandparents. “If she stays with us, the time of playing on her mobile phone can be limited. If we’re not around, she sometimes plays for a long time,” said her grandpa.
According to the teachers, boys prefer to play games. Pan Longye, 11, likes watching cartoons and playing games on the phone. His mother said, “Sometimes I give the mobile phone to him, and then I’m so busy that I forget it. In this situation, he plays for two or three hours.”
Research shows that when it comes to playing on mobile phones, the city children can be controlled by their parents, while the village children can hardly be controlled by their grandparents.
How can families and society help solve this problem? Since most left-behind children (留守儿童) live with their grandparents, it’s necessary for the elderly people to organize activities for children after school, like doing some housework and farm work. The Internet should also provide left-behind children with interesting learning resources, which can draw their attention and help them avoid harmful information online.
54. What bad influence does mobile phone addiction have on the students’ studies?

55. What is the main purpose of providing online learning resources to left-behind children?

Learning Beyond the Classroom
Learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom. Last winter vacation, I took part in a volunteer activity at a local nursing home. I helped the elderly clean their rooms, read newspapers to them and listened to their interesting stories. I also learned to make traditional snacks with them.
This experience taught me more than any textbook could. I learned to be patient and caring, and I understood that true happiness comes from helping others. It also made me realize that learning is everywhere in life, as long as we keep an open and active heart.
