On March 27, Budimir Šobat lay face down in a swimming pool for 24 minutes and 37 seconds. Before the attempt, he’d breathed pure oxygen for 30 minutes — enough to let him hold his breath for over 20 minutes, but risky: Blacking out could cause deadly reactions. Midway, he panicked briefly, and then repeated a quiet phrase to calm his heart. When he lifted his head, he’d beaten the Guinness World Record by over 30 seconds. A small crowd cheered, but Šobat just changed clothes, packed his belongings, and met his family — they didn’t even mention the record.
Šobat’s drive came from his daughter, Saša. Born with brain damage, doctors said she might never walk or talk. He and his wife Sandra left their old lives behind to train Saša 5 to 7 hours a day: Stretching her fingers alone took 45 minutes, and they even had to pin her down to relax the muscles in her small neck — even as she screamed and Sandra begged him to stop. Two and a half years later, Saša took her first step, and she was later diagnosed with autism (自闭症), too.
At 46, a friend introduced Šobat to freediving. He found peace in the sport, and soon realized the patience he’d learned with Sasa — waiting 5 to 10 minutes just for her to answer a simple question — helped him hold his breath longer. He later joined a campaign called “I’m Not Breathing” to raise money for the autism center where his daughter received treatment, since he’d long wanted to draw attention to autism and help families like his.
“You can be better than me, but you’ll never beat me,” says Šobat, now 60. Saša may never know her father is a world record holder, but that’s okay. For him, every second he spends holding his breath underwater is for her.
4.How did Šobat react after breaking the world record?
A.He celebrated with his family. B.He cheered with a small crowd.
C.He expressed his disappointment. D.He behaved surprisingly calmly.
5.What did Šobat do to his daughter with brain damage?
A.He introduced her to freediving. B.He trained her in a strict way.
C.He spent little quality time with her. D.He begged her to relax and enjoy life.
6.What can be concluded about Šobat’s freediving performance?
A.It benefited from his parenting. B.It went against medical advice.
C.It served as an escape from work. D.It required extra financial support.
7.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Depths of a Father’s Dedication. B.A Champion Freediver’s Technique.
C.Understanding a Daughter with Autism. D.Breaking Barriers through Determination.

More and more Australian children now use social media, where they can see content that is not meant for them. The report by an online safety company also found that close to half of Australian kids aged 10-15 spend an average of two hours a day on social media. The report showed early teens prefer apps through which they can share moments with friends and family. Almost 50 percent of children in that group use the app alike for an average of 93 minutes per day. Children aged seven to nine spend more than two hours daily on a game and chat platform. Additionally, about four in ten of these younger kids have a social media account.
Online safety expert Yasmin London called these figures concerning. She explained that simply banning (禁止) children from social media is not easy, because kids depend on these apps to stay in touch with friends. “All kids want to feel included and the online world and friendship groups online are part of that now,” she said. “Their online friendships matter just as much as those in real life.”
Professor Selena Bartlett, author of Being Seen, a guide for parents in the digital age, warned that increased screen time can have a bad influence on a child’s brain development. “Repeatedly checking phones can lead to ADHD-like symptoms (症状),” she says. “And that harmful content makes it even worse.” Bartlett described it as “shocking” that some platforms relaxed their rules to allow content that is improper for kids.
Both experts agree that urgent (紧急的) action is needed. They call for stricter rules on how children join social networks, steps to block improper material, and stronger education on digital safety at home and at school. They also want apps designed with children’s well-being in mind. By putting these measures in place, parents, schools, and governments can help young people enjoy online activities safely.
8.What is the percentage of Australian kids aged 7-9 having a social media account?
A.About 40%. B.About 50%. C.70%. D.93%.
9.Why did London think it was hard to keep kids free of social media?
A.Online friendships sound quite different.
B.Teachers ask them to use it after class.
C.They depend on it to attend school online.
D.It has become part of their social life.
10.What is Bartlett’s opinion about kids overusing phones?
A.They feel bad about the online world. B.It harms their brain development.
C.It has a bad influence on their parents. D.They often make mistakes in class.
11.What do the two experts hope to do about kids’ screen time?
A.Relax related time management. B.Place school education first.
C.Make joint efforts to address it. D.Stop all online activities at once.
D
When a friend comes to you after a stressful day, how do you comfort them? Do you let them shout? Do you pour them a glass of wine? Those could work. But a new study finds that a very effective technique is also simple and easy. That is “Hugging”.
Michael Murphy is a psychology postdoc (博士后) at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He wanted to know if people who received hugs regularly could handle stress and conflict better. So he made some study and found, “Individuals who report turning to a network for support tend to show better adaptation when faced with stress. But just because you have a support network does not mean that you definitely feel that support.”
So some researchers have argued that many of the behaviors we use to support others who are stressed might actually be counterproductive because these behaviors might unintentionally communicate to others that they’re not able to manage stress.
Murphy and his team interviewed 404 men and women every evening for two weeks. During these interviews, the participants were asked a simple yes or no question — whether somebody had hugged them that day — and a simple yes or no question of whether they had experienced conflict or tension with somebody that day. They also were asked questions about their social interactions — how many social interactions they had that day — and responded to questions about negative and positive mood states.
And the researchers found that individuals who experienced a conflict were not as negatively affected if they received a hug that day as were participants who experienced conflict and didn’t get a hug. Murphy and his team also saw that people who received a hug didn’t carry the negative effect to the next day, while those who did not receive a hug would.
Murphy does include this warning: “So our findings should not be taken as evidence that people should just start hugging anyone who seems distressed. A hug from one boss at work or a stranger on the street could be viewed as neither consensual (两相情愿的) nor positive.”
12.What can help people reduce stress according to the new study?
A.Having hugs. B.Drinking wine with friends.
C.Letting out a cry of pain. D.Taking advantage of a network.
13.What does the underlined word “counterproductive” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Helpful. B.Negative. C.Abnormal. D.Proper.
14.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The process of the study. B.The function of the interviews.
C.The behavior of the participants. D.The design of yes or no questions.
15.What is Murphy’s attitude to hugging in handling stress?
A.Subjective. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.

What comes to mind when you think about chocolate? A candy bar at Halloween? Ice cream on a hot day?
For Ibrahim, a 12-year-old boy from the West African country of Ghana, chocolate is not about sweet treats; it is about bitter work. 16 But if they did, we would learn that Ibrahim spends his days growing and harvesting cocoa beans, from which chocolate is made. We would also learn that he is just one of more than two million children who perform this difficult labour instead of attending school.
To change the harmful practices like this, some farms use an approach called Fairtrade. 17 It aims to create a different relationship between buyers (chocolate companies) and sellers (cocoa farmers) by encouraging farmers to join together to form a shared business called a cooperative. Because farmers work together instead of competing with each other, they can demand a higher price from the buyers. 18
Consumers like you can play a role as well. You can buy Fairtrade chocolate if possible, pressure candy companies to change their labour practices, or ask local stores to sell Fairtrade products. 19 It is a programme recognizing schools that provide Fairtrade products in cafeterias or include related lessons in curriculum (课程).
Chocolate has a hidden story that affects children like Ibrahim—children who want a happy future just like you do. 20 By enjoying Fairtrade products or simply spreading the word, you can make chocolate as sweet for all children as it is for you.
A.You have the power to change the story.
B.The labels on chocolate do not tell his story.
C.Fairtrade is a way of doing business that prohibits child labour.
D.You can also take action through the Fairtrade Schools network.
E.On many farms, children like Ibrahim perform difficult farming tasks.
F.Cocoa trees grow in the tropical climates of Africa, Latin America and South-East Asia.
G.With more income, farmers can pay adult workers and can send their children to school.

Johnmarshall Reeve, a professor at an Australian university, has spent two decades studying what happens when kids are given some agency (自主权) in school. He and other researchers found that when students are allowed some 21 to take their own initiative (倡议), they are more 22 in class and better able to master new skills, they have better grades and 23 problems with peers and they are happier, too.
Importantly, teachers do not need to change the curriculum they teach or change their disciplinary (学科的) 24 . They just need apply a few new teaching practices in the course of their 25 lesson.
Mr. Reeve suggested teachers use a 26 tone rather than controlling. Controlling language shuts students down. “They’ll put up a shield (屏障) and block you out,” Mr. Reeve told us. Reasoning language 27 the shield. Kids open up.
So, instead of “Here is an example of a good essay. Please go write one,” the teacher might say: “What is your 28 for this first draft?” Rather than simply being told, students 29 what they need to accomplish and develop a plan to make it happen. Teachers monitor and 30 them along the way.
This is how agency is built. No adult can 31 a student to be self-driven. Children develop the skill the way they learn anything else: with 32 . The act of setting the goal makes it more 33 .
Just as the developmental psychologist Aliza Pressman says: “Let kids do for themselves what they can already do. And 34 and encourage them to do things they can almost do. And then teach and model for them the things that they can’t do.” This is how adults can help children build 35 .

Recently, I had an unforgettable experience in downtown Austin. I’d travelled all the way from Texas just to spend some time exploring the lively city. One sunny day, I found myself in Zilker Park, sitting on a bench (长椅) and watching the people go by. It was a peaceful moment, and I felt completely at ease in this new environment.
After a few hours of this delightful people-watching, I decided it was time to head back to my car. As I reached into my bag for my keys, a cold wave of fear washed over me. My purse was gone! Panic set in immediately. My purse wasn’t just any ordinary bag; it held my ID, credit cards, all my necessary medicines, and a significant amount of cash — hundreds of dollars.
The anxiety started in my legs, making them feel weak and shaky. My mind went blank, and I couldn’t think straight. I knew I had to act fast.
I began to retrace (重走) my steps, walking back through the park, trying to remember every single place I’d been. I searched high and low, looking under benches and in every corner. After about an hour of this crazy search, I found myself standing in front of a Zilker Park gift shop. I didn’t really know why I stopped there, but something inside me told me to give it a try. Maybe, just maybe, someone had turned in my purse.
I took a deep breath and walked into the shop. My heart was pounding in my chest as I approached the cashier. “Excuse me,” I said, my voice trembling. “Has anyone brought in a black purse?”
The woman’s eyes widened in surprise, and she said, “Actually, someone has!” At that very moment, all the negative emotions came pouring out. Tears streamed down my face, and I couldn’t stop sobbing (啜泣). All the anxiety that had been building up inside me was finally released. The cashier then told me the whole story. About half an hour earlier, two women had come into the gift shop with a black purse.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
The two women said they’d found it under a bench.

【答案】4.D 5.B 6.A 7.A
根据第一段“When he lifted his head, he’d beaten the Guinness World Record by over 30 seconds. A small crowd cheered, but Šobat just changed clothes, packed his belongings, and met his family — they didn’t even mention the record.(当他抬起头时,已打破了吉尼斯世界纪录,且比原纪录多出了30多秒。一小群人欢呼起来,但索巴特只是换了衣服,收拾好物品,去和家人会合——他们甚至都没提及这项纪录。)”可知,在打破世界纪录后,面对人群的欢呼,Šobat只是换衣服、收拾东西然后和家人见面,家人甚至都没提纪录这件事。由此可知,Šobat的反应出奇地淡定。故选D。
5.细节理解题。根据第二段“Born with brain damage, doctors said she might never walk or talk. He and his wife Sandra left their old lives behind to train Saša 5 to 7 hours a day: Stretching her fingers alone took 45 minutes, and they even had to pin her down to relax the muscles in her small neck — even as she screamed and Sandra begged him to stop.(萨沙出生时大脑受损,医生称她可能永远无法走路或说话。为此,他和妻子桑德拉(Sandra)放弃了从前的生活,每天花5到7个小时训练萨沙:仅是活动她的手指就要花45分钟,他们甚至不得不按住她,让她放松颈部的小肌肉——即便萨沙尖叫连连,桑德拉也恳求他停下。)”可知,Šobat严格训练患有脑损伤的女儿。故选B。
6.推理判断题。根据第三段“At 46, a friend introduced Šobat to freediving. He found peace in the sport, and soon realized the patience he’d learned with Sasa — waiting 5 to 10 minutes just for her to answer a simple question—helped him hold his breath longer.(46岁时,一位朋友向索巴特介绍了自由潜水。他在这项运动中找到了内心的平静,很快便意识到,照顾萨沙时所培养的耐心——比如等她5到10分钟才回答一个简单的问题——也帮助他延长了屏息时间。)”可知,Šobat在照顾女儿Saša的过程中学会了耐心,而这种耐心帮助他在自由潜水中能更长时间憋气。由此可推断,他的育儿过程对自由潜水表现有益。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Šobat’s drive came from his daughter, Saša. Two and a half years later, Saša took her first step, and she was later diagnosed with autism (自闭症), too.(索巴特的动力源自他的女儿萨沙(Saša)。 故选A。

【答案】8.A 9.D 10.B 11.C
根据第一段中的“Additionally, about four in ten of these younger kids have a social media account.(此外,这些年龄较小的孩子中约有十分之四拥有社交媒体账户。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“She explained that simply banning(禁止)children from social media is not easy, because kids depend on these apps to stay in touch with friends. “All kids want to feel included and the online world and friendship groups online are part of that now,” she said.(她解释说,简单禁止孩子使用社交媒体并不容易,因为孩子们需要依靠这些应用和朋友保持联系。“所有孩子都想有归属感,而如今网络世界和网上的朋友圈也是其中的一部分。”她说。)”可知,伦敦认为禁止孩子使用社交媒体很难,因为它已成为孩子社交生活的一部分。故选D项。
10.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Professor Selena Bartlett, author of Being Seen, a guide for parents in the digital age, warned that increased screen time can have a bad influence on a child’s brain development.(塞莱娜·巴特利特教授是《被看见》一书的作者——这本书是写给数字时代父母的指南。她警告说,增加屏幕使用时间会对孩子的大脑发育产生不良影响。)”可知,巴特利特认为孩子过度使用手机会损害大脑发育。故选B项。
11.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Both experts agree that urgent (紧急的) action is needed. They call for stricter rules on how children join social networks, steps to block improper material, and stronger education on digital safety at home and at school. They also want apps designed with children’s well-being in mind. By putting these measures in place, parents, schools, and governments can help young people enjoy online activities safely. (两位专家一致认为,需要采取紧急行动。他们呼吁对儿童加入社交网络实行更严格的规定,采取措施屏蔽不良信息,并在家庭和学校加强数字安全教育。 他们还希望应用程序的设计能充分考虑儿童的身心健康。 通过落实这些措施,家长、学校和政府可以帮助青少年安全地享受网络活动。)”可知,两位专家希望各方共同努力解决问题。故选C项。

【答案】12.A 13.B 14.A 15.C
根据第一段“When a friend comes to you after a stressful day, how do you comfort them? Do you let them shout? Do you pour them a glass of wine? Those could work. But a new study finds that a very effective technique is also simple and easy. That is “Hugging”.(当朋友在经历了一天的紧张忙碌之后来找你,你会如何安慰他们呢?你会让他们尽情发泄吗?还是会给他们倒一杯酒?这些方法或许都行得通。但一项新的研究发现,有一种非常有效且简单易行的方法,那就是“拥抱”)”可知,根据这项新研究,拥抱可以帮助人们减轻压力。故选A。
根据划线词上文“many of the behaviors we use to support others who are stressed might actually be”以及后文“because these behaviors might unintentionally communicate to others that they’re not able to manage stress”可知,我们用来支持有压力的人的许多行为实际上可能是消极的,因为这些行为可能无意中向他人传达了他们无法管理压力的信息。
根据第四段“Murphy and his team interviewed 404 men and women every evening for two weeks. During these interviews, the participants were asked a simple yes or no question — whether somebody had hugged them that day — and a simple yes or no question of whether they had experienced conflict or tension with somebody that day. They also were asked questions about their social interactions — how many social interactions they had that day — and responded to questions about negative and positive mood states.(墨菲和其团队在两周内每天晚上都会采访404名男性和女性。在这些采访中,参与者会被问到一个简单的“是”或“否”的问题——当天是否有人拥抱了他们——以及一个简单的“是”或“否”的问题——当天是否与某人发生了冲突或紧张关系。他们还会被问及有关其社交互动的问题——当天进行了多少次社交互动——并且要回答有关消极和积极情绪状态的问题)”可知,第四段主要讲了研究的过程。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Murphy and his team also saw that people who received a hug didn’t carry the negative effect to the next day, while those who did not receive a hug would.(墨菲和他的团队还发现,接受拥抱的人不会把负面影响带到第二天,而那些没有接受拥抱的人则会)”以及最后一段“Murphy does include this warning: “So our findings should not be taken as evidence that people should just start hugging anyone who seems distressed. A hug from one boss at work or a stranger on the street could be viewed as neither consensual
【答案】16.B 17.C 18.G 19.D 20.A

19.上文“Consumers like you can play a role as well. You can buy Fairtrade chocolate if possible, pressure candy companies to change their labour practices, or ask local stores to sell Fairtrade products.(像你这样的消费者也可以发挥作用。如果可能的话,你可以购买公平贸易巧克力,向糖果公司施加压力,要求其改变劳工惯例,或者要求当地商店销售公平贸易产品。)”可知,许多儿童从事艰巨劳动而不能上学,对此消费者可以发挥一些作用来帮助他们,上文具体提出了消费者可以做的事,空处也应是具体措施,D项“你还可以通过公平贸易学校网络采取行动。”符合,故选D。
20.上文“Chocolate has a hidden story that affects children like Ibrahim-children who want a happy future just like you do. (巧克力有一个隐藏的故事,影响着像易卜拉欣这样的孩子——他们和你一样想要幸福的未来。)”可知,从事艰巨劳动而不能上学的儿童和你一样也想要幸福的未来,下文“By enjoying Fairtrade products or simply spreading the word, you can make chocolate as sweet for all children as it is for you.(通过买公平贸易产品或只是传播这个信息,你可以让巧克力对所有孩子来说都像对你一样甜。)”

36.where 37.wisdom 38.and 39.to demonstrate 40.containing 41.a 42.grew 43.further 44.was effected 45.What
分析可知,“_______ the smell of old books hangs in the air”为之前名词短语“these quiet halls”的非限制性定语从句,先行词在从句中作地点状语,用关系副词“where”引导从句。故填where。
故填and。
故填to demonstrate。
主语“a 17th-century edition of the Book of Han”与动词“contain”之间为逻辑上的主动关系,现在分词形式。故填containing。
故填a。
故填was effected。
故填What。

One possible version:
The two women said they’d found it under a bench. They had waited for a while, hoping the owner would return, but eventually decided to leave it at the shop since they were in a hurry. The cashier explained that they had left their contact information, insisting that the purse be returned personally to its owner. Listening to her words, my tears turned into smiles of immense relief. Not only was my purse safe with all its contents intact, but I was also deeply moved by the honesty and kindness of strangers in a bustling city.
I immediately called the number left by the two kind women. When they answered, I expressed my heartfelt gratitude, my voice still thick with emotion. They laughed warmly, saying they were just glad they could help and that they hoped I could enjoy the rest of my trip. Although we never met in person, their selfless act restored my faith in humanity. This unforgettable experience in Austin taught me that kindness exists everywhere, often appearing exactly when we need it most.
