Making small choices at home — like opening a refrigerator or starting a washing machine — can be part of a quiet revolution. Energy-saving appliances are now key tools in saving money and protecting our planet.
The Long-Term Savings
The real cost of an appliance isn’t just its price tag, but what you pay on your energy bills for years.
The table below shows a clearer picture of long-term savings over ten years:
Appliance
Standard Model (Avg. cost)
Low-energy Model (Avg. cost)
Refrigerator
$1,200
$800
Washing Machine
$1,000
$750
Air Conditioner
$3,500
$2,600
LED Bulbs
(pack of 10)
$300
$70
Smarter Homes, Lower Bills
Modern appliances use smart technology to save energy automatically. At CES 2025, Samsung showed an AI washer that adjusts cycles based on how dirty clothes are. Google Nest can run dishwashers during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper, saving up to $100 yearly. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that improved appliance efficiency could cut global energy demand by nearly 15% by 2040.

Last month, while on a writing course in Umbria, Italy, I was delighted to watch an elderly couple clean their messy chestnut orchard (栗子园), followed by their energetic sheepdog. The fallen crop was pulled into a giant fan that blew their jackets back out onto the ground, and then the nuts were sorted by other family members on a conveyor belt in the farmhouse — the good ones to be sold in the shell, the less perfect nuts swiftly dropped into a container for processing.
Later in the week, a truck turned up in the village square to pick up bags from other small local producers. That evening, I roasted a pan of chestnuts on the fire with new appreciation, while regretting the disappearance from the streets of London of the chestnut sellers of my childhood.
If you’ve never eaten chestnuts hot from the shell, I strongly urge you to seek them out. The vacuum-packed (真空包装的) and ready-cooked sort are, of course, extremely convenient, but they’re a quite different thing from the sweetly smoky, roasted variety, so fresh that you burn your fingers on them and don’t care.
While the season ends eventually, the chestnuts’ association with Christmas means that net bags of them have already made their annual appearance in greengrocers and supermarkets, no doubt as much for their decorative value as for their fibre content. Indeed, they were once an important basic food starch in hilly regions like Umbria and Tuscany. To this day, ground chestnuts pop up in cakes and cookies, breads and soups.
But I’d argue that any such tendency to powderiness is, like so many issues in life, helped by the liberal addition of fat, as proven by buttery chestnut frangipane tart, smoky bacon and cream cheese, and buttery rice with pumpkin. So, if you spot some chestnuts at the shops, go and buy them.
24.What does the author intend to show by mentioning the sellers in London?
A.A preference for food. B.A memory of childhood.
C.Differences between cultures. D.Dissatisfaction with life.
25.What kind of chestnuts does the author strongly recommend?
A.Vacuum-packed. B.Ready-cooked.
C.Freshly-roasted. D.Pre-shelled.
26.What was the main use of chestnuts in Umbria and Tuscany in the past?
A.A decorative item for Christmas.
B.A special ingredient in local desserts.
C.A key source of starch in daily life.
D.A profitable crop for small producers.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Chestnuts: A Bitter Memory
B.Chestnuts: From Orchard to Table
C.My Unforgettable Trip to Umbria
D.The History of Chestnut Growing

Social exclusion, whether from strangers or close friends, can deeply affect our sense of belonging and self-esteem. Social psychologist Kip Williams, who has spent decades studying this topic, explains that even brief exclusion — such as being left out of a casual group activity — can have a profound impact. This highlights how people, even in modern times, are greatly affected by being excluded, with just two minutes of social rejection showing significant psychological effects.
When friends leave you out, it can feel even worse. It’s easy to jump to conclusions, assuming someone is mad at you or intentionally distancing themselves. However, experts advise not to immediately assume the worst. There are various reasons why someone may seem distant — busy schedules, changing priorities, or personal struggles might be at play. Consulting a neutral friend about the situation can help you gain a different perspective without jumping into gossip.
If the exclusion becomes a pattern, it may be time to address the issue directly. Initiating a calm, non-confrontational conversation can help clear the air. Phrasing like, “I’ve been feeling a bit left out lately” can be a good way to open up the discussion. It’s important to pay attention to how your friends respond, as their reaction can reveal the health of the friendship. In some cases, if the behavior continues, it may be time to set boundaries and focus more on those who value and respect your presence.
Finally, give yourself grace. Exclusion hurts because it taps into a fundamental human need — to belong, to be seen, and to be chosen. When that need is unmet, especially by people we trust, the pain can linger. It’s not something you can just “shake off,” nor should you be expected to. Allow yourself time to process what happened without judgment. Sit with the discomfort, name the feelings, and remind yourself that your worth isn’t determined by someone else’s ability to recognize it.
28.What can we know about social exclusion?
A.It only appears in modern life B.It doesn’t take long to hurt
C.It reflects spiritual isolation D.It deepens psychic trauma
29.What does the underlined phrase in paragraph two mean?
A.Relying on subjective interpretations B.Misunderstanding an innocent friend
C.Gaining information in an reasonable way D.Spreading personal emotions
30.What is important after a conversation according to paragraph three?
A.Lower self-esteem to please the friend B.Set a clear boundaries to separate
C.Analyze the severity of the exclusion D.Assess the health of the friendship
31.Which opinion will the author approve of?
A.Self-improvement prevents future exclusion B.Belonging is a need we should outgrow
C.Our worth is beyond how others treat us D.We need to let our sense of belonging go
D
In the past, fireproofing materials were made with poisonous, flame-proofing chemicals. These have been replaced with other chemicals, which are considered safer, but some studies have linked these alternatives with brain damage and harm to water creatures. Tien Huynh at a University in Melbourne, Australia, and her colleagues have developed a more eco-friendly fireproofing material using mycelium — the root-like structure of fungus (真菌).
They grew mycelium from the fungus that can be eaten in containers of liquid molasses — a byproduct of sugar production. The mycelium grew as blankets on top of the molasses, which the researchers removed and dried before pressing them into millimetre-thin sheets. When the mycelium sheets were exposed to 800℃ flames, an outer layer of char (碳化) was quickly generated to prevent the rest of the sheets from burning.
“The material caught fire for about one second then ceased burning,” Huynh says. “The sheets only produced water and carbon dioxide (CO2) when they were set on fire, making them safer than existing fireproofing chemicals.”
The team now hopes to develop fire-resistant coating for homes and other buildings out of the fungus, which could be applied as a wallpaper-thin sheet or made into thicker panels. “The material appears to be highly durable,” says Huynh. Her team previously used it to make bricks, and she says she has had one sitting in her room for 10 years that hasn’t shown any signs of breaking down. “I can still jump on it because it’s so strong,” she says. “The fungus is killed during the drying process, so there is no danger of mushrooms growing out of the sheets.”
However, scaling up production of the material could be challenging. “The fungus don’t need light or electricity to grow, but they do need a big space if you want to grow enough for the building industry,” says Huynh. “Because they’re biological organisms, they’re also easy to be polluted (污染).” But Huynh mentions that her team has been approached by industry groups that may be able to assist with this scale-up process.
32.How is paragraph 1 organized?
A.History → Current state → Future prediction
B.Problem → Existing solution → New solution
C.Description → Definition → Recommendation
D.Assumption → Supporting details → Conclusion
33.What stops the mycelium sheets from burning?
A.The application of liquid molasses. B.The absorption of heat by inner parts.
C.The formation of a protective cover. D.The release of fire-proofing chemicals.
34.How does Huynh emphasize the material’s durability?
A.By giving an example. B.By quoting others.
C.By making a comparison. D.By using statistics.
35.What does Huynh think of the production scale-up of the material?
A.It is unlikely. B.It is easily achievable.
C.It is unrealistic. D.It is cautiously promising.
Someone makes a statement, and you know it is not true. Most of us can think of those times when we have smiled and nodded, likely to avoid “making waves”. Sometimes, knowing when to stay quiet is the smart choice. 36 But what about the vast number of times when not speaking your truth influences your emotional health? Sometimes, silence can quickly backfire and damage your relationships.
When you keep silent repeatedly, it may feel like you are avoiding conflict. 37 We all know that the “bottle it up and implode or explode later” plan does not work well for any of us. Every unspoken thought becomes a brick in the wall that grows between you and the other person.
38 If you consistently nod along passively, others will notice when your actions don’t agree with your words. They may wonder whether you are holding back or not being sincere. If you hold back to avoid hurting feelings or spare tension, the result may be the opposite.
Your view matters. By staying silent, you lose opportunities to express your feelings. 39 But later, if you unearth how you really feel, they may feel betrayed (背叛)that you did not open up about your true feelings earlier on. Continued silence may lead others to assume that you are not interested or that you are emotionally unavailable.
While silence sometimes may feel like caution and be wise, too much of it gets in the way of closeness and trust in relationships. 40
A.You’re actually building it up.
B.The growing doubt leads to distance.
C.Others may trust you because you are honest.
D.Trust comes from honesty more than it does from agreement.
E.Speaking up creates connection and conveys a sense of caring in others.
F.This is especially true when the other person tends to get annoyed easily.
G.Others may think your silence is an agreement with what they are saying.

As a senior high school student, Eric always thought he was old enough to make his own decisions and hated being told what to do. One Friday evening, his parents had to leave for his grandma’s home overnight because she was seriously ill. They asked Eric to stay home alone, reminding him repeatedly to lock the door, turn off the lights before bed and avoid watching TV for too long.
However, Eric felt annoyed by their endless nagging.“I’m not a little kid anymore! I can take good care of myself,”he shouted impatiently. His parents shook their heads helplessly and left with a heavy heart. The moment they drove away, Eric sighed with relief. He threw his schoolbag aside, turned on the TV and watched his favourite football match excitedly. So absorbed was he in the game that he totally forgot the time and all his parents’ warnings.
Suddenly, the screen went black — a power cut! Eric was about to check the fuse box(保险丝盒)when he heard a soft, rustling sound(沙沙声)from the kitchen. His heart pounded wildly. He recalled the news about a thief breaking into a nearby house just last week. Trembling with fear, he grabbed a baseball bat by the door and tiptoed cautiously(踮着脚小心地)towards the kitchen.
Eric slowly pushed open the kitchen door, baseball bat raised high.

W: My husband Nick switched to journalism 2 years ago, so we had to travel a lot. Thus, we sold our flat and moved into the car. This way, we can stay at campsites near where Nick is working.
M: Interesting. What do you find most challenging?
W: Though we’ve adapted well, there are things we have to tolerate. The hardest part is losing that daily connection with friends. You know, just meeting for coffee or having people over—that kind of closeness is difficult to maintain now.
M: Does Nick get used to it?
W: Yeah. Nick loves it very much. He earns more. More importantly, he thinks it has brought us closer.
M: Nick likes your book too, right?
W: Actually, he motivates me to write everything down. At first, I submitted those articles to his newspaper, and then an editor invited me to open a column. And finally, the book.

W: Over the summer, I came across a notice for a community “Senior & Teen” program. It paired up teenagers with neighbors over 60, so I decided to give it a shot. That’s how I got matched with Mrs. Brown, who lives alone a few streets over.
The rules were pretty straightforward: visit Mrs. Brown every Tuesday and Saturday afternoon — for about an hour each time. Most of our sessions were about me helping her with tech stuff, like using her phone to message, shop online, or scan old photos into a digital album. I still remember her laugh when she finally sent that album to her daughter all by herself.
We also had to turn in a short “Community Memory” each week, based on our chats. At first, I thought it was kind of a pointless assignment. But hearing Mrs. Brown’s stories about the neighborhood back in the day made me realize something: a community isn’t just houses and streets — it’s built from all these little memories that people carry with them.

根据第二段“That evening, I roasted a pan of chestnuts on the fire with new appreciation, while regretting the disappearance from the streets of London of the chestnut sellers of my childhood. (那天晚上,我怀着新的感激之情,在火上烤了一锅栗子,同时也为童年时伦敦街头那些卖栗子的小贩渐渐消失而感到惋惜。)”可知,作者提到伦敦的卖栗人是为了表达对童年的回忆。故选B项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“The vacuum-packed (真空包装的) and ready-cooked sort are, of course, extremely convenient, but they’re a quite different thing from the sweetly smoky, roasted variety, so fresh that you burn your fingers on them and don’t care. (当然,真空包装的即食栗子十分方便,但它们和那种带着淡淡烟熏香气、热乎烫手却让人毫不在意的现烤栗子完全是两回事。)”可知,作者强烈推荐现烤的新鲜栗子。故选C项。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段“Indeed, they were once an important basic food starch in hilly regions like Umbria and Tuscany. (事实上,栗子曾经是翁布里亚和托斯卡纳等山区重要的基本淀粉食物。)”可知,过去栗子在翁布里亚和托斯卡纳是日常生活中的主要淀粉来源。故选C项。
27.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Last month, while on a writing course in Umbria, Italy, I was delighted to watch an elderly couple clean their messy chestnut orchard (栗子园), followed by their energetic sheepdog. The fallen crop was pulled into a giant fan that blew their jackets back out onto the ground, and then the nuts were sorted by other family members on a conveyor belt in the farmhouse — the good ones to be sold in the shell, the less perfect nuts swiftly dropped into. a container for processing. Chestnuts: From Orchard to Table

C.Our worth is beyond how others treat us D.We need to let our sense of belonging go
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.C
根据第一段“This highlights how people, even in modern times, are greatly affected by being excluded, with just two minutes of social rejection showing significant psychological effects.(这清楚地表明,即便在现代社会,人们也会因被排斥而受到极大的影响,仅仅两分钟的社交排斥就会展现出显著的心理影响)”可知,社会排斥现象的伤害往往来得很快。故选B。
根据第二段“When friends leave you out, it can feel even worse.(当朋友疏远你时,这种感觉会更加糟糕)”以及“assuming someone is mad at you or intentionally distancing themselves(认为是有人在生你的气或者有意疏远你)”和划线词上文“Consulting a neutral friend about the situation can help you gain a different perspective without(向一位中立的朋友咨询一下这个情况,可以帮助你获得不同的看法)”可知,当朋友疏远时会容易主观臆断是有人在生你的气或者有意疏远你,应该向一位中立的朋友咨询一下这个情况,可以帮助你获得不同的看法,而不是主观解读。 故选A。
根据第三段“It’s important to pay attention to how your friends respond, as their reaction can reveal the health of the friendship.(重要的是要留意你的朋友们的反应,因为他们的反应能够反映出这段友谊的状况)”可知,对话结束后最重要的是评估友谊的状况。故选D。
根据最后一段“Sit with the discomfort, name the feelings, and remind yourself that your worth isn’t determined by someone else’s ability to recognize it.(面对这种不适,要坦然接受并认清自己的感受,同时要提醒自己,自身的价值并非取决于他人能否察觉到这一点)”可知,作者会赞同我们的价值并不取决于他人如何对待我们。故选C。

【答案】32.B 33.C 34.A 35.D
根据第一段“In the past, fireproofing materials were made with poisonous, flame-proofing chemicals. (过去,防火材料是用有毒的阻燃化学品制成的。这些化学品已被其他被认为更安全的化学品所取代,但一些研究表明,这些替代品会造成脑损伤,并危害水生生物。澳大利亚墨尔本一所大学的田・黄(Tien Huynh)及其同事,利用菌丝体 —— 真菌的根状结构 —— 研发出了一种更环保的防火材料。)”可知,段落结构为:提出问题→现有解决方案→新解决方案。故选B项。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“When the mycelium sheets were exposed to 800℃ flames, an outer layer of char (碳化) was quickly generated to prevent the rest of the sheets from burning. (当真菌菌丝片接触800℃火焰时,会迅速形成一层碳化外层,阻止剩余部分燃烧。)”可知,是保护层的形成阻止了燃烧。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“Her team previously used it to make bricks, and she says she has had one sitting in her room for 10 years that hasn’t shown any signs of breaking down. (她的团队曾用它制作砖块,这块砖在她房间放了10年没有任何分解迹象。)”可知,Huynh通过举例强调材料的耐用性。故选A项。
根据第五段“However, scaling up production of the material could be challenging. (然而,这种材料的规模化生产可能颇具挑战。“真菌生长不需要光照或电力,但如果要为建筑行业培育足够的量,就需要很大的空间,”Huynh说。“因为它们是生物有机体,也很容易被污染。”但Huynh提到,已有行业团体主动联系她的团队,或许能协助完成这一规模化生产过程。)”可知,Huynh对扩大生产谨慎乐观。故选D项。

【答案】36.F 37.A 38.D 39.G 40.E
36.根据上文“Sometimes, knowing when to stay quiet is the smart choice.(有时候,知道什么时候保持沉默是明智的选择)”以及下文“But what about the vast number of times when not speaking your truth influences your emotional health?(但是,在很多情况下,不说出真相会影响你的情绪健康,这又该怎么办呢?)”
37.根据上文“When you keep silent repeatedly, it may feel like you are avoiding conflict.(当你反复保持沉默时,你可能会觉得自己在避免冲突)”以及下文“We all know that the “bottle it up and implode or explode later” plan does not work well for any of us.(我们都知道,“把情绪憋在心里,要么自己崩溃要么后来爆发”的做法对我们任何人都没有好处)”可知,此处应否定“沉默能避免冲突”的想法,指出沉默的实际影响,A选项“You’re actually building it up.(实际上你是在积累冲突)”中的it指代上文的conflict,与下文“憋情绪会崩溃或爆发”相呼应,符合语境。故选A项。
38.根据下文“If you consistently nod along passively, others will notice when your actions don’t agree with your words. They may wonder whether you are holding back or not being sincere.(如果你一直被动地点头同意,当你的行动与你的话不一致时,别人会注意到。他们可能会怀疑你是否在隐瞒什么,或者是否不真诚)”可知,信任不是来自盲目的附和,D选项“Trust comes from honesty more than it does from agreement.(信任源于真诚,而非一味附和)”能总领下文,符合语境。故选D项。
39.根据上文“By staying silent, you lose opportunities to express your feelings.(保持沉默,你就失去了表达自己感受的机会)”以及下文“But later, if you unearth how you really feel, they may feel betrayed (背叛)that you did not open up about your true feelings earlier on.(但后来,如果你说出自己真实的感受,他们可能会因为你没有早点说出真实感受而感到被背叛)”可知,此处应体现沉默时他人的误解,G选项“Others may think your silence is an agreement with what they are saying.(别人可能会认为你的沉默是同意他们所说的话)”既呼应上文“沉默不表达感受”,又为下文“后来说出真实感受被认为背叛”做铺垫,符合语境。故选G项。
40.根据上文“While silence sometimes may feel like caution and be wise, too much of it gets in the way of closeness and trust in relationships.(虽然沉默有时可能显得谨慎且明智,但过多的沉默会阻碍人际关系中的亲密感和信任)”可知,此处应承接上文,给出正确做法,E选项“Speaking up creates connection and conveys a sense of caring in others.(主动表达能建立联系,并向他人传递关心)”与上文“过多沉默阻碍亲密和信任”形成对比,给出解决办法,符合语境。

The first five national parks为被动关系,所以用过去分词established作后置定语。故填established。

故填where。
故填and。

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
Eric slowly pushed open the kitchen door, baseball bat raised high. The moonlight streamed through the window, casting long shadows on the floor. He held his breath and scanned every corner, only to find the source of the sound was a stray cat knocking over a milk bowl. Relieved, he put down the bat and gently picked up the shivering cat. Remembering his parents’ words, he cleaned up the spilled milk, checked the fuse box (but in vain), and then lit a candle. He fed the cat some bread and tucked it beside the sofa, feeling a strange sense of responsibility welling up in his heart.
Paragraph 2
When Mum and Dad came back the next morning, they were shocked by what they saw. The living room was tidy, with the TV turned off and the door locked properly. A candle stub sat on the table, and a tiny stray cat was curled up on the sofa, fast asleep. Eric came over with a smile and told them the whole story, including his fear and the unexpected encounter with the cat. His parents hugged him tightly, their eyes filled with pride. Eric realized that growing up wasn’t just about claiming independence — it was about taking care of himself and the world around him.
