No one expected that Baduanjin would become popular among young Chinese people. In the past few years, an online teaching video of Baduanjin, a form of Qigong, has been played for more than 10 million times. “I have been doing Baduanjin for about four months. It helps me sleep better and get stronger. I like Baduanjin very much because it gives me a much healthier lifestyle,” a young man said.
Baduanjin is one of the oldest health and fitness ways in China, originally created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. Its name is made up of two parts, namely “baduan” and “jin”. The first part refers to eight separate movements. And the second part refers to the stretch (伸展) and grace (优美) of the movements.
Compared to sports such as ball games or swimming, Baduanjin is slow and usually played with quiet music, so it used to be considered as a sport for the elders. In recent years, however, many young people came to realize the advantages of the sport. It helped kill their neck and back pain after long working hours while not requiring much effort, time and space.
Sun Yuxuan, a college student majoring in martial arts (武术), has also noticed the rising popularity of Baduanjin. The 21-year-old girl has been teaching other students to practice Baduanjin for over three years. They started with 20 members in 2019 and the group has 45 members now. “Every member in the group is very healthy.” she said.

Plants can’t move like animals, but they have clever ways to spread their seeds (种子). This helps them grow in new places and live longer. Let’s learn how plants spread their seeds.
By Wind
Light seeds with special shapes can fly with the wind. Dandelions are the best example. Their seeds look like tiny white umbrellas and can travel kilometers. Maple tree seeds also have “wings” that spin like helicopters (直升机) when falling.
By Animals
Animals help spread seeds in some ways. First, birds eat fruit and drop seeds while flying. Second, some seeds have tiny hooks (钩子) to stick to animal fur. You might find these seeds on your clothes after walking in a field! Third, squirrels even bury nuts and sometimes forget where they hide the nuts.
By Water
Seeds near water use rivers or oceans to travel. Coconuts are “experts” at this. Their hard shells let them float for months until reaching beaches. Water lilies also have seeds that float like little boats.
By Humans
People usually spread seeds without knowing. When farmers plant crops or kids eat apples and throw cores (果核), seeds are carried to new places. In these ways, humans help plants spread without even realizing it.
Thanks to these smart ways, plants can live in different environments. Next time you see a seed, think about its amazing journey!

D. By eating fruits and throwing the cores.
30. Where is this text most likely from?

B
Having worked in a nature reserve (保护区) for 30 years, Hou Tiguo has developed a special ability — he can tell what kind of birds are around simply by their saying. “I can also tell whether they are happy or unhappy,” he added with a big smile.
The 52-year-old’s home, Baihualing, a village in Yunnan province, is well-known for different kinds of birds. He recalled, “In the 1970s people were so poor. Birds were often killed as food, so almost all the children including me in the village were good at using slingshots (弹弓).”
His life changed in 1989 when a couple hiking through the mountains visited Baihualing. They asked him to be their guide and lead them to good bird-watching spots. He said, “That was the first time I had made money from birds without killing them.”
Inspired by that the villagers built a reserve to feed birds and protect the living places of birds. In the following ten years, more bird-watchers visited the village. The village became a popular choice for bird lovers, and most villagers have turned into bird protectors and taken part in serving bird-loving tourists.
In the village, there are more than 60 “bird guides” like Hou. More than 20 guesthouses which have hosted visitors from more than 100 countries bring in a total income (收入) of 1.5 million yuan every year. “During the peak season, I serve nearly 100 tourists a day. Thanks to the birds, our life is not what it used to be anymore.” Hou said, adding that he takes his 3-year-old grandson with him every day to feed birds and teaches him to love and respect them.
31. Why does the writer describe Hou’s special ability in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce his story about birds. B. To feel the beauty of nature.
C. To show his love for the job. D. To introduce different kinds of birds.
32. What is the right order according to the text?
a. Hou became a bird guide for hikers. b. Villagers built a reserve to protect birds.
c. People killed birds for food in the 1970s. d. The village became popular with bird lovers.
A. c→a→b→d B. a→c→d→b C. c→b→d→a D. a→d→c→b
33. What does the underlined word “peak” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Coldest. B. Happiest. C. Busiest. D. Saddest.
34. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. All villagers should be guides. B. Protecting nature can bring us a better life.
C. Baihualing is an old village with a long history. D. Bird-watching is a popular hobby around the world.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Traveling in Yunnan B. A Rich Village in China
C. The Beautiful Birds of Yunnan D. A Bird Lover and His Village
【答案】31. A 32. A 33. C 34. B 35. D

第五段划线词“peak”所在句子“During the peak season, I serve nearly 100 tourists a day”,结合前文“每年接待来自100多个国家的游客,总收入150万元”,可推断“peak season”指游客最多、最忙碌的季节,因此“peak”意为“最忙碌的”。

Over the past ten years, China has achieved excellent development, and its high-speed rail system stands out as a clear proof (证明). On December 29, 2025, four new high-speed rail lines—Xi’an-Yan’an, Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu, Wuhan-Yichang and Hangzhou-Quzhou—started services. With these new additions, China’s total operating high-speed rail mileage (里程) has passed 50,000 kilometers, which is more than the total length of all high-speed rail lines in the rest of the world.
Today, the high-speed rail network covers 97% of Chinese cities with a population of over 500,000, completely changing people’s travel experience. Traveling between cities within 500 kilometers takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometer journey takes about four hours. An average (平均值) of 16 million passengers take high-speed rail every day. This is very different from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only 60 kilometers per hour.
High-speed rail now connects big cities with medium and small towns, driving tourism and local industries. For example, after the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed rail opened in 2014, Jiangxi Province—located between the two cities—saw a huge increase of 248 million tourists in ten years. Moreover, China has shared its technology and experience with over 40 countries, cooperating on projects. From importing (引进) technology to becoming a global leader, China’s high-speed rail is a proud symbol of the country’s progress, and faster maglev (磁悬浮) trains are being studied for even better development in the future.
36. How does the writer show the great progress of China’s high-speed rail in paragraph 1?
A. By asking questions. B. By describing a future dream.
C. By telling a personal story. D. By comparing it with the rest of the world.
37. How long does it take to travel 1,000 kilometers by high-speed rail?
A. One to two hours. B. About four hours.
C. About six hours. D. About eight hours.
38. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. High-speed rail is too expensive for small towns.
B. China’s high-speed rail is now the world’s longest.
C. High-speed rail makes travel faster and easier now.
D. High-speed rail develops and helps China and the world.
39. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. China’s rail operating mileage has been over 50,000 kilometers.
B. High-speed rail has greatly improved people’s travel experience in China.
C. Traditional trains used to run at an average speed of 60 kilometers per hour.
D. China only shares high-speed rail technology with foreign countries but has no actions.
40. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the future of China’s faster maglev trains?
A. Uncertain. B. Doubtful. C. Hopeful. D. Worried.
【答案】36. D 37. B 38. D 39. D 40. C

Inspired by that, the villagers built a reserve to feed birds and protect the living places of birds.

C. Traditional trains used to run at an average speed of 60 kilometers per hour.
D. China only shares high-speed rail technology with foreign countries but has no actions.
40. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the future of China’s faster maglev trains?
