Teaching and learning difficult points: 1) Listening comprehension for extracting detailed information from an interview, and listening to summarize the information; 2) Learning about the expressions referring to common knowledge and use them to talk about air pollution. Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Review and leading in Activity 1 Review and leading in 1. Briefly revise the rules of changing direct speech into indirect speech and check the answers to the grammar exercises in the reference book. 2. Lead in the teaching topic—talking about air pollution, and then introduce the teaching and learning objectives of this period. Step 2 Listening Activity 2 Pre-listening Look at the pictures and talk about air pollution by answering the following questions. 1. What can you see in these pictures? Chimney, fossil fuels, smog, haze, greenhouse effect, and new energy vehicles. 2. What information can you get from these pictures? I can get information about where the pictures were taken, for example, the bridge is in London, and the chimneys are in a power station. Both places look very polluted. I can see that the car is powered by electricity as it is plugged in. I can see some coal being burned. These pictures tell me that the interview is probably about energy and pollution. 3. How do these situations influence your life? These situations influence my life not only by providing electricity for me, and transporting me, but also by polluting the air I breathe. 4. Are there similar environmental problems in your city or town? What do you know about air pollution? (Open question.) Activity 3 While-listening 1. Listen to an interview with an air pollution expert and decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F). Answers: 1-5 TTFFF New words: 1) smog n. 烟雾 (a mixture of smoke and fog) 2) originate vi. vt.起源;发源;创立 origin n.起源;起因;由来 original adj.原始的;最初的;独创的;新颖的 originally adv.原来;起初 originate in起源于 originate from来自 in origin起源上;起因上 e.g. All theories originate from practice and in turn serve practice. 所有的理论都来源于实践并反过来为实践服务。 All knowledge originates from labour. 一切知识都源于劳动。 The disease is thought to have originated in the tropics. 人们认为这种疾病起源于热带地区。 Though the statements differ in origin, both have the ability to paralyze action and prevent progress. 虽然这两种说法起源不同,但都可能阻滞行动、阻碍进程。 2. Learn about how to summarize information while listening. Summarizing information: In active listening, summarizing helps you review the key points of a speaker’s message. In order to write a good summary, you must take notes of the most important points as you listen. When summarizing, you need to be as concise as possible and use your own words. 3. Scan the text. Listen again and take notes on what the expert said. Then summarize the information you got from the interview. Suggested answers: in the early 20th, industry, used lots of coal, was particularly bad and caused over 4,000 deaths, burning coal, move away from city centers, replace coal with cleaner forms of energy, new energy-efficient vehicles, green technology. 4. Reconstruct the text by summarizing the main content of the listening material. Step 3 Speaking up Activity 4 Learning about the expressions Learn about the use of expressions for referring to common knowledge. Everyone knows that …/Most people think that .../ As is known to all, ... There is no doubt that .../ We all know that…/It is obvious that … Activity 5 Thinking, discussing and sharing 1. Work in groups. Discuss the questions, using the expressions above to help you. And then share the answers. 1) Have you experienced heavy smog where you live? Have you seen photos of big cities under clouds of smog? What is it like? I have occasionally experienced heavy smog where I live. I have also seen pictures of heavy smog over cities. It is very thick and hard to see through. There is no doubt that it is not a good thing. 2) What do you think are the major causes of smog in China? Industry and vehicles are the major causes of smog in China. 3) What measures have the government and citizens taken to help address the problem? These measures include restricting the consumption of coal, developing clean energy, controlling the emission of pollutants (控制污染物排放), enforcing new emission standards (执行新的排放标准) and using public transport. 2. More questions for thinking, discussing and sharing. 1) Do you think smog is extreme weather or a disaster?
