“Yes,” said Dr. Mortimer, “Barrymore.”
“We must send a telegram(电报) to check whether Barrymore is in London or at Baskerville Hall,” said Holmes.
Sir Henry said he wanted to go to Baskerville Hall.
“OK”, said Holmes. “But you mustn’t go alone. Watson can go with you.”
Sir Henry and I agreed to take the 10:30 train on Saturday.
Holmes thought deeply on the way home: the story of the Hound, Sir Charles’s death, the strange letter, the missing boot and the black-bearded man. He sat in his room all afternoon, smoking and thinking.
Just before dinner, a telegram arrived. It said, “Barrymore is at Baskerville Hall.”
“That becomes a dead end, Watson. We will have to look for another way to go forward.”
Just then the doorbell rang. It was the cab driver who drove the man with the black beard. “I got a message that you are asking for me”, he said. “I’ve never had a complaint. I came here to ask you what you had against me!”
“No, no,” said Holmes. “Instead, I’ll give you money if you tell me about the man in your cab this morning. He watched this house at 10:00 and then told you to follow the two gentlemen.”
The driver looked surprised and then answered, “The man said he was a detective and that I shouldn’t tell anyone about him.”
“It’s serious, my friend, and you may be in trouble if you refuse to answer.” “His name,” said the driver, “was Sherlock Holmes.”

She thought it was the greatest happiness in her life as many graduates wanted to get that job and she was one of the few people who got it!

She thought about it for one or two days and finally she decided that she would try her best to do this job. From then on, she learned to appreciate her own job. She wrote down the names and phone numbers of the staff members on a notebook so that she could remember them. She found great pleasure dealing with the daily chores. When a phone call came in, she picked up the phone as soon as possible. When someone asked her about who was not in the office, she would give the right name and even the time when he or she left. Nobody could do that except her.
Her excellent work received praise not only from the embassy’s members, but also from people in the local government. A leader of a famous company in Britain was deeply impressed by her, so he invited her to work for him. ①Life is full of unexpected moments that can surprise us. When facing unexpected situations we often find ourselves at a crossroads: to react or to respond. While these two words may seem similar, they are actually different ways to deal with challenges. Understanding the difference can help us make better choices in difficult situations.
②Reacting is our natural response. It’s immediate and emotional. When we react, we want to follow a simple pattern: something happens, we feel anxious, and then we continue without much thought. So some regrettable decisions are always made because it doesn’t allow time for proper consideration.
③Responding, on the other hand, is a more thoughtful process. Before we take actions to do with the event, it helps to create more space. This space allows us to observe our emotions, understand the situation clearly, and make thoughtful choices. The responding process can be broken down into four steps: pause, process, plan, and proceed.
④Research from UCLA has shown that simply naming our emotions—a technique called Affect Labeling (or Emotion Labeling) that is the practice of identifying and naming our emotional state, such as saying “I feel anxious” or “I’m disappointed right now”. It can greatly reduce stress levels. By doing this, we create mental distance from our emotions, making it easier to respond wisely.
⑤ ▲ You might make mistakes in your work, or you just forgot your homework at home or had an argument with a friend. Instead of reacting right away—like yelling (吼叫), crying, or doing something you’ll regret, try these following four steps: First, stop and take three deep breaths. Second, say to yourself how you’re feeling. Third, think about what choices you have. Fourth, choose the best action and do it.
⑥Just as life’s unexpected moments test us at every crossroads, the choice between reacting and responding greatly shapes our journey. By practicing the art of thoughtful response again and again, we change those surprising challenges into chances for growth. Two ways of thinking seem similar at first, but one gives you a lasting superpower: when things get unknown, you stay calm and choose wisely.
37. What is the key difference between “reacting” and “responding”?
A. Reacting is planned, while responding is natural.
B. Reacting needs help from others, while responding doesn’t.
C. Reacting is for big problems, while responding is for small problems.
D. Reacting is quick and emotional, while responding is calm and thoughtful.
38. Why does the author mention “Affect Labeling” in Paragraph 4?
A. To argue emotions should be ignored. B. To suggest only experts should use it.
C. To show how naming emotions reduces stress. D. To announce it as an ineffective emotional tool.
39. Which sentence can be put in the “ ▲ ”?
A. These steps are too difficult for most people to follow.
B. This way of responding works for all kinds of problems.
C. When facing major life challenges, these steps won’t help.
D. Experts suggest reacting immediately to solve problems.
40. What is the best title and structure of the passage?
A. Responding wisely B. Reacting quickly
C. Responding wisely D. Reacting quickly

Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of physical books was coming to an end. The objects that had been the companions of millions of readers for hundreds of years were about to disappear. Soon, we’d all be reading on little electronic screens and laughing at the memory of places called “libraries” and “bookshops”.
___41___ At least in the UK, as The Guardian noted, sales of e-books are falling while sales of physical books are rising. More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most physical books. More than 60 percent of 16-to-24-year-olds preferred print books to e-books. The most popular reason given was “I like to hold the product.”
Books become very personal objects to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them. ___42___ And we carry books around with us everywhere.
If there’s a mark made on the pages from coffee or food, it doesn’t matter. ___43___ It’s as if readers of physical books make friends with their books.
Of course, some could say that the devices on which people read e-books, like Kindles and iPads are also objects that we like. But it isn’t quite the same. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. ___44___
Physical books are as valuable to some readers as photographs of family members. This “friendship” people develop with books isn’t just about feelings. Research has shown that readers remember more information read from physical books than electronic ones.
However, there’s no doubt e-books are here to stay. ___45___ But it’s also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too.
A. They aren’t simply a “here today, gone tomorrow” thing.
B. These accidents make the book—our book—even more personal.
C. However, it seems not true about the idea of the death of the physical books.
D. Many buyers of books like to write down their names on the inside cover when they’ve bought one.
E. But a story we remember from our time turning its real pages in our favourite armchair remains in our memory forever.

That morning, we noticed a cab following Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer in London. But who?
We went to Sir Henry’s hotel. Holmes asked Dr. Mortimer if anyone with a black beard (胡须) lived in or near Baskerville Hall.
“Yes,” said Dr. Mortimer, “Barrymore.”
“We must send a telegram(电报) to check whether Barrymore is in London or at Baskerville Hall,” said Holmes.
Sir Henry said he wanted to go to Baskerville Hall
I’d never seen Holmes more surprised. Then he laughed. “He scored against me that time, Watson.”
The driver told us everything he knew. Holmes gave him the money and sent him away. “This is a dangerous enemy, Watson.”

29题详解】
词义猜测题。根据“That becomes a dead end, Watson. We will have to look for another way to go forward”以及上文可知,他们在寻找那个黑胡子男士,但是现在他们走进了死胡同,需要另寻出路,故此处划线部分意为“不知道那个黑胡子男士是谁”。故选D。

【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据“‘His name,’ said the driver, ‘was Sherlock Holmes.’”以及“I’d never seen Holmes more surprised. Then he laughed. ‘He scored against me that time, Watson.’”可知驾驶员告诉福尔摩斯他车上坐的那个人叫福尔摩斯,真正的福尔摩斯说那个人比他占得先机,由此可推断此处“he”指的是“之前坐在马车上的人”。故选B。

①Life is full of unexpected moments that can surprise us. When facing unexpected situations, we often find ourselves at a crossroads: to react or to respond.
④Research from UCLA has shown that simply naming our emotions—a technique called Affect Labeling (or Emotion Labeling) that is the practice of identifying and naming our emotional state such as saying “I feel anxious” or “I’m disappointed right now”.

【答案】41. C 42. D 43. B 44. E 45. A

【42题详解】
根据“Books become very personal objects to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them”可知,本段介绍书籍从一开始人们拿到它就变得越来越私人化,选项D“许多买书的人在买书时就喜欢在封面里写上自己的名字”符合语境。故选D。
【43题详解】
根据“If there’s a mark made on the pages from coffee or food, it doesn’t matter. 以及 It’s as if readers of physical books make friends with their books.”
根据“But it isn’t quite the same. ”可知,此处在说像kindle这样的电子书阅读设备和我们的纸质书的不同,选项E“但是我们能记住的故事,是在我们最喜爱的扶手椅上翻开了真正的一页,而且这个故事一直存在在我们的记忆里“符合语境。故选E。
【45题详解】
根据“However, there’s no doubt e-books are here to stay. But it’s also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too.”可知,不管是电子书还是纸质书都不是简单的今天存在,明天就消失了,纸质书从15世纪就一直存在。选项A“它们不是简单的今天存在,明天就消失的东西”符合语境。故选A。

51. 汤姆是如此的淘气,他总是作弄其他小朋友。
Tom was ________ naughty ________ he always ________ jokes ________ other kids.
【答案】 ①. so ②. that ③. played ④. on
故填:so;that;played;on。
52. 一天,汤姆问杰瑞是否能够帮他一起搬动一块大石头。
One day Tom asked Jerry ________ ________ ________ ________ to move a big stone together.
【答案】 ①. if ②. he ③. could ④. help
