Unit 4 A good read (Integration I)
作业练习
I. Nora is reading a summary of Gulliver’s second adventure in Gulliver’s Travels. Read it with her and answer the questions below.
Once again, Gulliver got on a boat and left home. However, there was a great storm at sea. The strong winds drove his boat to an island.
Everyone on the island was very large. Many of them were more than 20 metres tall. A farmer found Gulliver and took him home. The farmer’s daughter took Gulliver to town to show him around. Everyone in town was surprised to see such a small person.
The queen heard about Gulliver and bought him from the farmer. She gave Gulliver to the king as a present. The king enjoyed listening to Gulliver talk about his home and his travels. A small box was also built for him. Wherever the king and queen went, they carried Gulliver with them in his box.
One day, Gulliver went to the beach. Suddenly, an eagle picked up Gulliver’s box—with Gulliver in it—and carried it up into the air. But by accident, the eagle dropped the box into the sea. Gulliver used the box as a boat until a ship found him.

Gulliver soon grew tired of living at home and wanted to travel again. He went to sea on a boat and came to a new island. The people there were dirty and had long hair. They did not wear clothes. They lived like animals and didn’t seem very clever. Gulliver was afraid of these people, so he ran away.
Then he met two horses. The horses were talking in their own language. They took him to a house and to his surprise, the horses lived like people. They were very clever and had schools and businesses. The horses also used humans as animals to help them work. Gulliver soon learnt the horses’ language. He became a member of their community because they liked him and found him interesting to talk to.
Because the horses were so kind and gentle, Gulliver loved living among them. However, to the horses, humans were nothing more than animals and they knew that humans sometimes fought and killed one another. Since Gulliver was human, the horses started to become afraid of him. They feared that he might cause trouble, so they finally asked him to leave.
Gulliver built himself a small boat and sailed away.
