Sandoval, who comes from Los Angeles, has traveled and filmed in over 50 countries across seven continents and now lives in China. “In 2008, tired of my studio work in the U. S, I came to China, with the hope of trying something different for myself.” he said.
Sandoval is a professional photographer and he went to Chengdu in Southwest China to live in October 2008 and has traveled throughout the country since then.
To him, Chengdu is the capital of a laid-back lifestyle. He was delighted to see that residents, dressed stylishly or comfortably, strolled in the streets “as slowly as snails”. Almost a “walking encyclopedia” of Chengdu, Sandoval covered every corner of Chengdu and recorded Chengduese and their lives with his camera, listening to the sound of mahjong being played and music from traditional stringed instruments.
He also goes from place to place with his heavy travel kit. The various culture and vast, beautiful land has kept him in China much longer than he had planned in the beginning. You have two basic types of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory. Things you see or hear first enter your short-term memory. Very little of this information passes on into your long-term memory. Does this mean you have a bad memory? Not at all.
Your short-term memory has a certain job. Its job is to store information for a few seconds only. Your short-term memory is at work when you look up a phone number, call the number, and then forget it. You remembered the number just long enough to use it. Then it disappeared from your memory. That’s really a good thing. Imagine if your memory held every number, every face, and every word you ever knew!
However, some information is important to remember for a longer time. Then it must pass from short-term to long-term memory. Sometimes we tell ourselves to remember something. We might also practice it: “OK, don’t forget: 555-1212, 555-1212.” Usually, we don’t even think about it. Our brain makes the decision for us. It decides to store the information or let it go.
The brain seems to make the decision by asking two questions:
Does the information affect our emotions? That is, does it make us happy, sad, excited, or upset?
Does the information concern something we already know, so our brain can store it with something already there?
An answer of “Yes” means that the new information enters long-term memory. That means the brain creates new connections among brain cells.
Information disappears when connections among brain cells become weak. They get weak if time passes and the connections are not used. That’s why it is good to read your lecture notes soon after the class. To keep the memory of something strong, think of it often. For example, look at those lecture notes the next day. Look at them the day after that, too. Every time you think about something, the connections in the brain get stronger. Then it is easier to remember the information when you need it.
28. When is your short-term memory at work?
A. You look up an important phone number and repeat it again and again.
B. You read English words every morning.
C. What you’ve learned is reviewed after class.
D. The impression of a stranger soon disappears after you meet with him/ her.
29. What information enters long-term memory according to the passage?
A. Information concerning something unfamiliar.
B. Information affecting our emotions.
C. Information creating brain cells.
D. Information reaching you first.
30. How can we keep the long-term memory of lecture notes strong?
A. By remembering them for a long time for only once.
B. By looking at them after months.
C. By referring to them regularly.
D. By putting them away after class.
31. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A popular magazine. B. A science fiction. C. A news story. D. A book review.
D
A recent study suggests that eating cheese (奶酪) might have a good effect on health, especially when it comes to sleep. The study, published in the Sleep Medicine journal, explored the possible relationship between eating cheese and a reduced risk of sleep apnea, a condition where breathing stops and starts during sleep.
While past research has talked about the general health advantages of cheese, this study specifically looked at its possible connection to sleep apnea. The researchers noted that cheese contains important nutrients (营养物) like calcium, protein, and vitamins, which may support metabolic and heart health-two factors (因素) related to sleep apnea.
To conduct the study, the researchers analyzed data from two large health databases: the UK Biobank and the FinnGen. They studied health information from 400,000 people and found that those who ate cheese had a 28% lower risk of developing sleep apnea compared to those who did not eat cheese.
The study used a method called Mendelian randomization, which helps recognize cause-and-effect relationships between risk factors and health results. It also examined how eating cheese might influence 44 different biomarkers (生物标志物), such as blood pressure. The results showed that eating cheese affected 23 biomarkers, with six of them directly connected to a lower risk of sleep apnea.
While this connection is certainly exciting, Kael Merrick, a professor of Collegiate Mental & Physical Health Sciences, warned that the study only shows a relationship, not a cause-and-effect relationship, so we have a long way to go.
Dr. Kevin Shayani, who is from Lenox Hill Hospital at Northwell Health in New York City, said that cheese might reduce some bad factors connected to sleep apnea. However, he advised against eating plenty of cheese, as some cheeses are higher in fat than others. Some experts say that people with sleep apnea may feel tired when they wake up after a full night’s sleep. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, medicine, or even operations, depending on how serious the problem is. Always ask a doctor for advice if you have worries.
32. What did the new study aim to explore?
A. The connection between eating cheese and a reduced risk of sleep apnea.
B. Clear advantages of getting a deep sleep.
C. Different factors affecting the general health.
D. The rising risks of heart problems among the elderly.
33. What does the author want to do in paragraph 4?
A. Introduce results of other findings. B. Point out new research directions.
C. Provide extra information connected to the study. D. Present a practical solution.
34. What does Kael Merrick think of the study?
A. It remains to be continued. B. It is unexpected.
C. It makes no sense. D. It is well-designed.
35. What does Dr. Kevin Shayani suggest people do?
A. Go to the doctor’s often. B. Eat cheese reasonably.
C. Get enough sleep. D. Keep a balanced lifestyle.

Now I am a famous writer and public speaker who always believes in the great power of language. I still remember how the very first speech that I gave changed my life more than I could have ever imagined.
When I was in sixth grade, my teacher, Mrs Lin, encouraged me to sign up for the school speech contest. I was pretty bad at the rehearsal (排练). I felt quite nervous and afraid of failure. Therefore, after class, I ran to the office to find Mrs Lin. Hearing what I said, Mrs Lin sounded puzzled. “You’ve put your heart and soul into practicing it all these past few weeks.” “Yes,” I wanted to say. All I had dreamed of was to represent my school on that stage and be the best public speaker ever. Instead, I whispered, “I messed up big time at rehearsal today. I… I’ve been messing up regularly… a lot. I want to quit.” My words came fast on each other’s heels. “Can you tell the judges I’ve been seriously ill, please?” I sounded hopeless.
Mrs Lin was quiet for several moments. “Making up lies is not how we solve problems, Lucy,” she finally said. “You are not the person to shy away from a challenge.” I nodded uncertainly. Then she took out a book about Phoenix. She hoped that Phoenix could give me courage. During reading, Phoenix’s story of bravery and her fight for education fascinated me. Her determination and courage in the face of challenges deeply moved me. Inspired by her story, I decided that my speech would be about Phoenix and the importance of education for everyone.
As the day of the contest approached, I was still struggling with my fears. I knew I had to overcome them, not just for myself but also for the message I wanted to convey through Phoenix’s story. I decided to take a different approach to my preparation. I started by researching more about Phoenix, her life, her struggles, and her devotion to education. During this process, I also sought feedback from Mrs Lin. She listened attentively to my drafts and offered constructive comments. Her guidance was invaluable, helping me to shape a speech that was not only informative but also emotionally rich.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing.
