Travelling around the world can be exciting, but it can also lead to culture shock and feelings
of stress.
When I moved to Tuscany,Italy, right after college,I was enamored by the scenery.Who
wouldn't be?The rolling hills, beautiful buildings and delicious food made the long flight worth
every minute.I was excited about my new beginning. But then,I started to notice little things.
As an American,we are used to a bit of personal space.Where I'm from, knocking into
someone or standing very closely is considered rude. This is different from the truth in Italy.
Since translation apps were uncommon at that time,I would feel helpless sometimes for not
knowing the language. However,Italians like to speak with their hands-a habit I've carried over
to this day.
Of course, having experienced culture shock in one country doesn't mean you will get used
to it in another.
Years later, when I moved to China,my experience was special. The culture there was some-
thing very foreign to me-down to how to buy things. Before moving there,I had never heard of
WeChat or Alipay.I wasn't prepared at all for how important these things would be.
Experiencing small waves of culture shock reminds me that I am travelling around the world
and that I should appreciate()what I'm taking in.
American-British writer Bill Bryson said that "...the greatest reward of travel is...to be able
to experience everyday things as if for the first time.

Whether it's putting your elbows on the table or talking with a mouth full of food, everyone
has to watch their manners at some time.Manners have developed over thousands of years and
are always changing.Around 100 years ago, children weren't allowed to speak unless parents
spoke to them first. Now young people can make their voices heard in many places.
Manners also mean different things in different countries.Eating food loudly is considered
rude in some countries, but in others it's a sign that people are enjoying their meal. What do you

Dear David,
Long time no see.Recently I have read an article
about natural disasters. And I want to share my
thoughts with you.
The disaster I fear most is earthquakes. They hap-
pen suddenly without warning, and buildings may
fall down within seconds.Last year,I watched a
video about the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and it
shocked me deeply.People lost their homes,fami-
lies, and even lives in just a few minutes.Unlike
floods or storms, earthquakes give almost no time
to escape, which makes them especially terrifying.
What about you?Which natural disaster scares
you the most?Looking forward to your reply!

I'm glad to hear from you. Here is my advice for
visiting a Chinese friend's home.
First,it's polite to arrive on time or a few minutes

preparing.Second,you'd better call before visit-
ing to make sure it's convenient.Third,bringing a
small gift like fruit or tea is a good idea, and it
doesn't need to be expensive.Last,remember
these table manners:wait for the host to start eat-
ing,and try every dish to show your enjoyment.
I believe these tips will help you.Have a good
time!
Yours,
Li Hua
