It’s not me who needs their GCSEs (英国普通中等教育证书) — it’s you!” shouted our science teacher, Miss T, to our year 10 class. We had all just failed our mock exam Miss T was young, but old-school. While I considered this mock as just practice, she treated it like an FA Cup semi-final. I remember it vividly: “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!” she yelled. Despite her best intentions, I felt that it was an overreaction. Our real exams weren’t for 12 months, so why all the drama? I had gotten a D without any revision, so I was quite confident that if I did a little reading, I’d be all right. But looking back, I realize I was wrong to ignore her advice. The teenage me found comfort in paying no attention to my tutor’s criticism instead of committing to the hard work of self-analysis and reflection. Success isn’t a tap you can turn on when you feel like it; it’s the result of hard work and preparation. This was the lesson Miss T wanted us to learn. Fortunately, I quickly “fixed up”. Until then, I had been successful in school, but this incident was a wake-up call. I learned that talent alone wasn’t enough; hard work was essential. As the saying goes: hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. I hit the books hard, and the hard work paid off. When I opened my GCSE results envelope the next summer, the only D was in my name. The balance was acceptable As and A+. This would not have happened without Miss T’s “Fix up” roar (怒吼). I thanked her on results day, but I wish I had shared how she changed my approach to work. Her advice still guides me. Whether in school or in my career as a comedian and doctor, I aim for high-quality performances every time. Like Miss T said, “Fix up.” It’s a lesson I carry with me every day. 24. What was the author’s original attitude toward the mock exam? A. Relaxed. B. Critical. C. Serious. D. Anxious. 25. What does Miss T mean by saying “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail”? A. Preparation is driven by fear of failure. B. Success comes with careful preparation. C. One should always prepare for the worst. D. Failure is one part of the learning process. 26. Why did the author ignore Miss T’s criticism? A. His overconfidence in his own ability. B. His avoidance of self-reflection efforts. C. His misunderstanding of her intentions. D. His boredom with her strict teaching style. 27. What’s the best title of the text? A. A Respectable Strict Science Teacher B. The Journey From Failure to Success C. A Lesson in Success: Talent and Effort D. A Wake-Up Call: The Power of “Fix Up” C ChatGPT reached 100 million users within two months of its late 2022 release, making it one of the fastest-growing applications in history. Since then, the artificial intelligence (AI) tool has greatly affected how we learn and work. However, new research shows that it’s also influencing us in ways we may not notice, such as changing how we speak. After studying over 360,000 YouTube videos and 771,000 podcast episodes, researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development discovered that in the 18 months after ChatGPT’s release, words like “meticulous” and “delve” were used up to 51 percent more often in daily speech. These words are called “GPT words” by researchers because the AI tool often adds them while editing articles. AI tools are trained on large amounts of text from different sources. Because of this, they tend to favor the most common words and phrases in their results. This is now clearly affecting human writing. Ritesh Chugh, an associate professor from CO university Australia, believes that using the same words too often makes writing lose its personal touch. It becomes harder to tell one writer from another, and everything takes on a robot-like tone, Chugh wrote on The Conversation. While words like “delve” may sound fancy, Chugh pointed out that they actually make writing harder to understand. Fancy language doesn’t communicate ideas as well as clear language, and using too many stylistic words can make writing boring instead of interesting. Colin Cooper, a human behavior scientist, told Newsweek that the real danger of using GPT words is linguistic homogenization, meaning everyone sounds fancy and safe but at the cost of personal tone and authenticity (真实性). Researchers believe AI influence is extending beyond vocabulary to longer, structured speech, potentially shaping our thought processes. Instead of expressing our own thoughts, we just end up saying whatever AI suggests. “In the end, writing should be about expressing your ideas in your own way. While ChatGPT can help, it’s up to each of us to make sure we’re saying what we really want to,” Chugh wrote. 28. What is the main finding of the Max Planck Institute’s research? A. AI is shaping our vocabulary choices. B. Human languages are losing their diversity. C. AI prefers academic words to common ones. D. Human and AI languages are becoming similar. 29. What can be inferred about Chugh’s view on AI’s writing influence? A. It enhances the clarity of writing. B. It makes all writing sound the same. C. It weakens people’s interest in writing. D. It contributes to misuse of fancy words. 30. What does “homogenization” mean in Para.4? A. Improving overall quality. B. Simplifying complex content. C. Making something more diverse. D. Causing things to become similar. 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. ChatGPT’s fast growth and wide use. B. AI’s influence on personal writing style. C. New words created by AI in recent years. D. AI’s influence on language use and expression. D It is official: Iceland is no longer mosquito-free. On Oct 21, the country’s Natural Science Institute announced that three mosquitoes had been discovered near Reykjavik, the capital city. This marks “the first record of mosquitoes occurring in the natural environment in Iceland”, Mathias Alfredsson, a scientist at the institute, told CNN. Mosquitoes are common insects with over 3,700 species worldwide, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Iceland, thanks to its cold, tough climate, had been one of the only two places on Earth without mosquitoes, the other being Antarctica. However, climate change is changing that. This spring, Iceland saw record temperatures, hitting 26.6°C on May 15, with some areas experiencing more than 10°C above average, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Iceland isn’t the first place to lose its mosquito-free status. Hawaii was mosquito-free until 1826, when they “hitch-hiked (搭便车)” there on European and American ships. These insects thrived in Hawaii’s climate, and in recent years, global warming has helped expand their range into the islands’ higher-elevation forests that were once too cold for them. Even in regions where mosquitoes are common, more species are appearing as the planet warms. In the UK, two invasive species, including the Egyptian mosquito, were discovered this year. They can spread diseases like dengue fever, which affects 100 to 400 million people annually, according to the World Health Organization. Mosquitoes thrive in warm temperatures. They are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature matches their environment. Mosquito larvae (幼虫) need temperatures between 7°C and 16°C to grow, and adults prefer temperatures over 27°C, hibernating below 10°C. Besides temperature, climate change spreads mosquitoes by making precipitation (降水) irregular, given that mosquitoes stay in still, dirty water before becoming flying adults, Stanford Report noted. Floods create breeding pools for them, while droughts lead people to store water, increasing mosquito habitats. While mosquitoes are taking advantage of climate change, other animals are being forced to expand their range further north for the same reason, said World Atlas. This is particularly true for Arctic species like polar bears and snowy owls. 32. What is the main reason for the appearance of mosquitoes in Iceland? A. The rise in global temperatures. B. The increase of human activities. C. The lack of natural hunters there. D. The adaptation of mosquito species. 33. Why does the author mention Hawaii in Para.3? A. To explain how ships spread mosquitoes. B. To emphasize the impact of climate change. C. To compare the climate in Hawaii and Iceland. D. To show its suitable environment for mosquitoes. 34. How does irregular precipitation influence the mosquitoes according to Para.4? A. It forces them to fly to warmer places. B. It speeds up the growth of mosquito larvae. C. It provides more breeding habitats for them. D. It lowers the temperature for adult mosquitoes. 35 What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. More animals will enter Iceland in the future. B. Mosquitoes will continue to expand their range. C. Climate change affects animal movements differently. D. Arctic species suffer the most from the climate change. Glowing Chinese Lanterns Chinese lanterns come from a 2,000-year-old tale: When Chinese emperor Zhuge Liang needed to send a signal during a dark night, he had an idea. ____36____ He wove together the bamboo frame (框架) in the same shape as the hat he was known for wearing. I remember it vividly: “Fail to prepare prepare to fail!” she yelled. A Wake-Up Call: The Power of “Fix Up” 【答案】24. A 25. B 26. B 27. 根据第二段“While I considered this mock as just practice, she treated it like an FA Cup semi-final.”(我只把这次模拟考试当作练习,而她却把它看得像足总杯半决赛一样重要。)以及第三段“I had gotten a D without any revision, so I was quite confident that if I did a little reading, I’d be all right.”(我没复习就得了D,所以我很自信只要稍微看会儿书就没问题。) 故选A。 根据第三段“Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!”(不做准备,就是准备失败!)以及第四段“Success isn’t a tap you can turn on when you feel like it; it’s the result of hard work and preparation.”(成功不是你想开就能打开的水龙头,它是努力与准备的结果。) 根据第四段“The teenage me found comfort in paying no attention to my tutor’s criticism instead of committing to the hard work of self-analysis and reflection.”(年少的我乐于无视老师的批评,而不愿付出努力去自我分析和反思。) D。 C ChatGPT reached 100 million users within two months of its late 2022 release, making it one of the fastest-growing applications in history. A 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第二段“After studying over 360,000 YouTube videos and 771,000 podcast episodes, researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development discovered that in the 18 months after ChatGPT’s release, words like “meticulous” and “delve” were used up to 51 percent more often in daily speech. It becomes harder to tell one writer from another, and everything takes on a robot-like tone, Chugh wrote on The Conversation.(澳大利亚CO大学的副教授Ritesh Chugh认为,过于频繁地使用相同的词汇会使写作失去个人风格。 根据下文“meaning everyone sounds fancy and safe but at the cost of personal tone and authenticity. 根据第一段“ChatGPT reached 100 million users within two months of its late 2022 release, making it one of the fastest-growing applications in history. 35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. More animals will enter Iceland in the future. B. Mosquitoes will continue to expand their range. C. Climate change affects animal movements differently. D. Arctic species suffer the most from the climate change. 32 A 33. B 34. C 35. However, climate change is changing that. This spring, Iceland saw record temperatures, hitting 26.6°C on May 15, with some areas experiencing more than 10°C above average, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. 故选A。 根据第三段“Iceland isn’t the first place to lose its mosquito-free status. Hawaii was mosquito-free until 1826, when they “hitch-hiked” there on European and American ships. These insects thrived in Hawaii’s climate, and in recent years, global warming has helped expand their range into the islands’ higher-elevation forests that were once too cold for them. 根据第四段“Besides temperature, climate change spreads mosquitoes by making precipitation irregular, given that mosquitoes stay in still, dirty water before becoming flying adults, Stanford Report noted. Floods create breeding pools for them, while droughts lead people to store water, increasing mosquito habitats. 根据最后一段“While mosquitoes are taking advantage of climate change, other animals are being forced to expand their range further north for the same reason, said World Atlas. This is particularly true for Arctic species like polar bears and snowy owls.
