Situational Lead-in
Step 1: Lead-in
1. Greet students warmly.
2. Show the "Lead in" questions from the PPT:
A: Do you drink milk every day? Why?
B: Do you know how the milk we drink is processed?
3. Invite 2–3 students to share their answers.
4. Introduce the topic: "Today we will learn about a very important invention that makes milk safe to drink. It was invented by a great scientist, Louis Pasteur."
Purpose: To activate prior knowledge and connect the topic to students' daily lives.

Step 2: Pre-reading (Vocabulary) (5 mins)
1. Show the new vocabulary on the PPT (pasteurize, process, heat, raw, bacteria, germ, microbiologist, toast, dairy, scientist).
2. Drill pronunciation (choral and individual).
3. Use simple examples to clarify meanings (e.g., "Raw milk is milk that is not heated." / "Bacteria are very small living things that can make us sick.")
Step 3: While-reading (12 mins)
1. First Reading: Students read the conversation between Jeremy and his mum. Ask them to find:
- What does "PASTEURIZED" mean?
- Who invented the process?
2. Check answers together.
3. Second Reading: Students read again and answer the three questions in the PPT:
A: According to the passage, what does the word "PASTEURIZED" mean?
B: How did people know their milk needed to be heated?
C: How did Louis Pasteur's work make the world safer?
4. Check answers together.
Step 4: Language Points (8 mins)
Use the PPT to explain key language points:
- pour: pour a glass of milk / pour... into... / pour... over...
- go through: go through a process / go through hardships
- process: (n.) a series of actions; (v.) to treat or change something
- heat: (v.) to make something hot; (n.) hot temperature
- get sick: get + adjective (become sick)
- a toast to sb.: Here's a toast to you!
Step 5: Practice & Writing (10 mins)
1. Gap-fill Exercise: Students complete the paragraph with correct forms of the words (invent, get, solve, heat, kill). Check answers together.
2. Writing Task: Show the model passage about paper from the PPT. Explain the structure:
- What is the invention?
- Who invented it? When?
- Why is it important?
3. Students work in pairs to discuss and take notes about an invention they like.
4. (If time allows) Ask 1–2 students to share their ideas.
Step 6: Summary & Homework
1. Summary: Review key vocabulary and the story of Louis Pasteur. Ask students:
"Why do we say 'Thank you, Mr Pasteur'?"
"What sentence patterns can we use to introduce an invention?"
2. Homework:
- Basic: Write a short paragraph (5–6 sentences) introducing an invention you like. Use the sentence patterns: It was invented by... / It was invented in... / It has made a great difference...
- Advanced: Interview a family member about their favorite invention and write a short report.
- Preview Unit 5, Lesson 5
