Situational Lead-in
Step 1: Lead-in
1. Greet students warmly.
2. Show the "Lead in" question from the PPT: "What do you like to do on the computer?"
3. Let students tick their answers (take online course, chat with friends, send emails, do homework search, etc.).
4. Invite 2–3 students to share: "I like to _______, because _______."
5. Introduce the topic: "Today we will learn how computers and the internet have changed the way we study."
Purpose: To activate prior knowledge and connect the topic to students' daily lives.

SStep 2: Pre-listening (Vocabulary) (5 mins)
1. Show the new vocabulary on the PPT (widely, tool, spell, print, dictionary, simply, AI, definition, application).
2. Drill pronunciation (choral and individual).
3. Use examples to clarify meanings (e.g., "We use a dictionary to look up words.")
Step 3: While-listening (10 mins)
1. First Listening: Play the conversation between Jenny and her mum. Students listen and answer:
A: What does Jenny want to do on the computer?
B: How did Jenny's mum do homework when she was a student?
2. Check answers together.
3. Second Listening: Play the conversation again. Students complete the fill-in-the-blanks exercise from the PPT.
4. Check answers together.
Step 4: Post-reading & Grammar Focus (15 mins)
1. Grammar Discovery: Write two sentences on the board:
- Computers were not widely used.
- Everything was written by hand.
Ask: What do these sentences have in common? (was/were + past participle)
2. Explanation: Use the PPT to explain the past simple passive voice:
- Structure: was/were + past participle
- Usage: when the action is done to the subject
- Examples: The window was broken. / The meeting was held.
3. Practice: Complete the multiple-choice exercises from the PPT (items 1–6). Check answers and explain any difficulties.
Step 5: Speaking & Discussion (5 mins)
1. Show the discussion prompt: "What are the advantages and disadvantages of computers and the internet?"
2. Students discuss in pairs. Encourage them to use the vocabulary learned.
3. Invite 2–3 pairs to share their ideas.
Step 6: Summary & Homework
1. Summary: Review key vocabulary and the past simple passive voice structure. Ask students:
"How did students do homework before computers?"
"What is the structure of past simple passive voice?"
2. Homework:
- Basic: Write 5 sentences about how computers and the internet have changed our lives. Use the past simple passive voice in at least 2 sentences.
- Advanced: Write a short dialogue (8–10 lines) between two students discussing the advantages and disadvantages of using computers for study.
- Preview Unit 5, Lesson 4.
