Skateboarding Changes My Life
On my 35th birthday, I gave myself my first skateboard. Most of my friends and family thought I was crazy, but only I knew why.
Two years ago, I accidentally fell down a 12-meter waterfall and broke my pelvis. I went from using a wheelchair to using crutches, then to trying to walk a block, and finally walking miles. Physical activity became even more important in my life. So why not make it enjoyable? I’ve wanted to learn to skateboard since I was a kid, but most of my time and energy went into dancing. In my opinion, skating was actually very similar to dancing.
For a long time, I tried to learn skating on my own. I had no idea what I was doing and always felt awkward when many strangers saw me skating or simply trying to keep my balance. That fear of being judged often stopped me from just getting out there for practice.
One day, my friend Monica and I met some of the members of GRLSWIRL, a skateboarding club. They were so friendly that we wanted to be part of it. This club was amazing. Even though everyone there was better than me, they were happy to help and excited to see me overcome challenges. There, I gradually became more confident.
For me, a big part of skating was overcoming my PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Falling is a huge part of skating, but because of that accident, it was really hard for me to overcome it. However, the more I learned from every little fall — allowing my body to understand that it was OK, and that I could drop and get up again — the less my PTSD took over. The more I skated, the better my body and mind felt. Although I started skating for therapy, I never imagined it would open up a new world of excitement and possibilities for me.
31. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 2?
A. The author didn’t spend much time dancing. B. The author used to be a good skateboarder.
C. The author had a car accident two years ago. D. The author put in a lot of effort to walk again.
32. What does the underlined word “awkward” in Paragraph 3 mean?

33. When did the author become confident?
A. After she joined the club. B. After she got good at skateboarding.
C. After she wrote a letter to her uncle. D. After she achieved good results in the game.
34. Why was it hard for the author to overcome falling while skating?
A. Her doctor had wanted her not to fall. B. Falling would be laughed at by others.
C. She didn’t want to hurt her leg again. D. The past experience left her with bad feelings.
35. What did the author think of skateboarding?
A It would be her life work. B. It was a light on her road of life.

Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood﹣powered of coal﹣powered stoves.
One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun.Crosby Menzies,a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the“Sol.4”,”It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooler.”
The“Sol.4”works by reflecting (反射)light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct (把…对准)the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy.Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also much “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it.And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal.Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.
At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs about $2000,which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem,Crosby Menzies has crated a non﹣governmental organization called solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.

任务型阅读
How big is your brain and how long is your thumb (大拇指)? Recently, a UK study found that primates (灵长类动物) with longer thumbs are likely to have larger brains (大脑).
Scientists from the University of Reading studied the brain size and thumb length of 94 primate kinds. They found that humans and our close relatives (亲缘物种) have longer thumbs than other primates. Interestingly, longer thumbs often come with bigger brains.
We’ve always known that our big brains and thumbs set us apart (分开), but they didn’t develop separately, Joanna Baker from the team told the BBC. The study also showed that longer thumbs are not connected to the part that controls movement, as people often think. It is actually connected with the part of the brain that deals with thinking and feeling.
But the study doesn’t prove (证明) that thumb length shows whether an animal uses tools. The Guardian pointed out that the link (连接) between thumb length and brain size is the same for all primates, tool users or not.
51. A UK study found that primates with longer thumbs are likely to ________.

A. It would be her life work. B. It was a light on her road of life.
C. It was something she had to do. D. It was the reason for her to get her life back.
