From September 2025, British Sign Language(BSL,英式手语)
classes will be taught to GCSE students (aged 15—16) in the
UK, reported Euro News. The GCSE exams are similar to the high
school entrance exam in China.
Before, students in the UK could choose from different
languages such as German and French for their GCSEs, but BSL
was not included. The recent change is in part because of the hard

work of student Daniel Jillings from Lowestoft, UK. The 17-year-
old has been trying to get the class added since he was 12.
A BSL course would be“a step toward building fairness
between deaf and hearing students”, Jillings said. Around 87,000
people in the UK are deaf, according to the British Deaf
Association, with a total of around 151,000 people in the country
using BSL. Jillings is deaf and was born without a cochlea
(耳蜗). So he cannot use hearing aids. He has always used BSL
and thought it was unfair that he could not take a GCSE in the
language he uses to communicate.
In 2018, on the webpage he created, Jillings questioned if
顶尖中考冲刺模拟试卷·英语(五)
leaving BSL out of the country’s GCSE course was fair. Jillings
has since been the subject of a film and has spoken in BSL to
more than 20 MPs(议员).
Thanks to his efforts, the UK government began planning for
a BSL GCSE in 2019. However, it hasn’t taken until now for the
plan to be completed.“I hope that a BSL GCSE will encourage
children to learn to sign and that families of deaf children can use
BSL with them from a young age,” Jillings said.

Go outside. What do you see? Do you see the gray sidewalk,
or do you see the little flowers looking out from the cracks
(裂缝)?
Looking and thinking about the outside world is a kind of
science. It’s called natural history. It goes back to ancient times.
Aristotle from Greece and other philosophers (哲学家) at the
time started to look at the differences of the natural world.
顶尖中考冲刺模拟试卷·英语(五)
39
Over time, more and more“naturalists” got busy studying,
collecting, and organizing the world’s animals, plants, and minerals
from all kinds of mines. They tried to put together the
“puzzle(谜)” of life onEarth, and even the whole universe.
Today, natural history museums around the world give people
a place to think about natural history, but this is only a starting
point.
In China, interest in natural history is very high right now.
From natural history books and apps to environmental groups and
顶尖中考冲刺模拟试卷·英语(五)
activities, people are showing great interest. This is happening at
the same time as China is working to make a greener world, said
experts from the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences.
Nowadays, natural history is seen as a kind of lifestyle. People
like to think about it together with other things, such as art,
writing, food, and travel. In the following pages, we will look at
this“naturalist lifestyle” and show you how it is good for the mind,
body, and spirit.
We need naturalists now more than ever. The puzzle of life on
Earth is still not solved, and it’s changing quickly because of
things like climate change. So read on and learn more!

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and
less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally
healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive
Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the
University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000
seventh-grade Canadian students between 2019 and 2023. The
顶尖中考冲刺模拟试卷·英语(五)

students first answered questions about their usage of screen time
after school, including how much time they spent watching TV,
streaming media or something else. Then, students reported how
many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as
sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students
to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a
statement such as“I start most days thinking that I will have a
good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on
a scale(尺度).
顶尖中考冲刺模拟试卷·英语(五)
Some of the results were expected, said researchers in the
study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high
levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would
score higher on negative indicators(消极指标) of mental health,
as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher
levels of anxiety(焦虑) compared to boys.
Researchers pointed out that even among students who took
part in after-school activities,46% still went beyond the suggested
screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who
顶尖中考冲刺模拟试卷·英语(五)
didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two
hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time
among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable
for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said.“While past
studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for
social and academic development, the present study shows their
importance for good mental health results.”

A
A. To show that most teens don’t follow the screen time limit.

From September2025,British Sign Language(BSL,英式手语)classes will be taught
to GCSE students (aged 15-16)in the UK,reported Euro News. The GCSE exams are
similar to the high school entrance exam in China.
Before, students in the UK could choose from different languages such as German and
French for their GCSEs,but BSL was not included. The recent change is in part because of
the hard work of student Daniel Jillings from Lowestoft,UK.The 17-year-old has been trying
to get the class added since he was 12.
A BSL course would be "a step toward building fairness between deaf and hearing
students",Jillings said.Around 87,000 people in the UK are deaf, according to the British
Deaf Association, with a total of around 151,000 people in the country using BSL.Jillings is
deaf and was born without a cochlea().So he cannot use hearing aids.He has always

to communicate.
In 2018,on the webpage he created,Jillings questioned if leaving BSL out of the
country's GCSE course was fair.Jillings has since been the subject of a film and has spoken in
BSL to more than20MPs(议员).
Thanks to his efforts, the UK government began planning for a BSL GCSE in 2019.

Go outside. What do you see?Do you see the gray sidewalk,or do you see the little
flowers looking out from the cracks(裂缝)?
Looking and thinking about the outside world is a kind of science. It's called natural
history. It goes back to ancient times.Aristotle from Greece and other philosophers (

and apps to environmental groups and activities, people are showing great interest. This is
happening at the same time as China is working to make a greener world, said experts from
the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of
screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the
journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the
·56·
University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian
students between 2019 and 2023.The students first answered questions about their usage of
screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV,streaming media
or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school
activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to
describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as "I start most days
thinking that I will have a good day",they could choose to what level they agreed with it on
a scale(尺度).
Some of the results were expected, said researchers in the study.Students with no
after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected
girls would score higher on negative indicators(消极指标)of mental health,as earlier
research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (compared to boys.
Researchers pointed out that even among students who took part in after-school
activities,46%still went beyond the suggested screen time of two hours. At the same time,
67%of students who didn't take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours
of screen time.Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
"The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of
teenagers,"the study said."While past studies have proved the importance of after-school
activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for
good mental health results."
61.How did the researchers collected information?
A.By observing their daily behaviors in person.
B.By asking them to answer some forms.
C.By interviewing their teachers and parents.
D.By checking their school records.
62.Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A.Talking about their social communication.
B.Introducing their after-school activities.
C.Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D.Answering questions about screen time use.
63.Why are these numbers listed in Paragraph 4?
A.To show that most teens don't follow the screen time limit.
B.To prove that most teens like after-school activities very much.
C.To explain that after-school activities and screen time are unrelated.
D.To remind that girls more likely go beyond the limit than boys.
·57·
64.What do the research results suggest?
A.There were some unexpected findings along with the expected ones.
B.After-school activities have no direct effect on teens'mental health.
C.Many students failed to meet the recommended activity time limit.
D.Boys are more likely to have mental health problems than girls.
65.What would be the best title for this text?
A.How to Reduce Teenagers'Screen Time Effectively
B.Differences in Mental Health Between Boys and Girls
C.Screen Time vs.After-School Activities:Which Is More Important
D.Screen Time vs.After-School Activities:Exploring Teens'Mental Health

impossible.I worried about my weight and 66 such as no-fat,low-fat,5:2,only
bananas,no bananas-I almost went bananas,too.
67 that said instead of asking“Am I fat?”I should be asking“Am I fit?”68
Once I started thinking about fitness rather than weight, things began to change.Instead of
saying "I want to lose three kilos",I would say "I want to run two kilometers in eight
minutes"or "I want to be able to do 30 push-ups".Rather than cutting out the foods I enjoyed,I
added healthy foods to my meals.I could still have a hamburger now and then, but 69
Finally,I stopped comparing myself with actresses and models and looking for things
that were wrong with my face or body.70 By being positive about myself and my body,I

Dear Alex,
I'm glad to know that you are interested in Chinese calligraphy.Let me tell you something about it.It is a kind of
traditional art with a history of over 3,000 years. It is written with a brush, and there are many different styles like regular
script, running script, and cursive script, each of which has its own features and beauty. It is not only a form of art,but also a
way of self-expression.Learning Chinese calligraphy can improve our attention, patience, and creativity. It can also help us
relax and reduce stress.Besides, studying its history and culture can deepen our understanding of Chinese art.So I hope you'll
fall in love with it and have a try.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
