It might be fun to use your smartphone, but be careful. Too much screen time may be harmful (有害的) to our health.
First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause eye strain (劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect (影响) how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.
Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.

②“In a word, it is a very good thing for animals to sleep with their people.” said Dr. Dana Varble, the chief veterinary (兽医学) officer for the North American Veterinary Community.
③According to Varble, pets who share their human’s bed may have a “higher trust level and a closer relationship with the humans that are in their lives”. Also, sharing beds with humans is good for pets’ health, including increases in oxytocin (催产素) and dopamine (多巴胺).
④Then, is it good for you to sleep with a pet? That may stop people’s sleep,” said Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky, a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
⑤But recent studies have shown that pets in the bedroom could be good for people with depression (抑郁) or anxiety because they can make those people feel better.
⑥Although the new science has told us good news, we still need to think twice about bringing our dogs, cats or indoor pigs into our beds. “It is bad for people with insomnia (失眠) or for patients with other sleep disorders,” Polotsky said.

People of your age, like your classmates and friends, are called your peers. When they try to influence how you act or get you to do something, they bring you peer pressure.
Peers can have a good influence on each other. They learn from each other and make progress together. Sometimes, however, peers influence each other in bad ways. For example, a few classmates might get you to cut class, or a friend might want you to try smoking.
Some children give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked or they worry that other children might make fun of them if they don’t follow the group. Others go along with the group because they want to try something new that their peers are doing. So sometimes, it’s hard to be the only one to say “no” to peer pressure. But you can do it.
Paying attention to your own feelings about what is right can help you make the right choice. You can simply stay away from peers who ask you to do something wrong. When you find it difficult to deal with peer pressure, you can talk to someone you trust. Don’t feel sorry if you’ve made a mistake. Speaking it out can help you feel much better.
Remember, true friends will respect your choices. If they pressure you into doing bad things, they aren’t good friends. Stay strong, trust yourself, and choose peers who encourage you to be better. Saying “no” now can save you from bigger troubles later.
34.What is peer pressure?
35.Why do some children give in to peer pressure?
36.What can you do if you find it hard to deal with peer pressure?
37.How can you choose the right friends? Write 30 words or more.

1.My best friend Lucy studies really ________ and is ________ absent from classes.
A.hardly; hard B.hard; hardly C.hard; hard D.hardly; hardly
2.It’s 5 years ________ we last met. I can’t stop ________ you.
A.after; to miss B.since; missing C.when; miss D.since; to miss
【答案】B
【知识点】从属连词辨析、since引导时间状语从句、动名词作宾语、can't/couldn't stop doing sth.、miss 落下
after在……之后;since自……以来;when当…… 以来已经多久了”;can’t stop doing sth.
3.Make sure ___________ you have posted the letter, will you?
A.to B.that C.this D.it
【答案】B
【知识点】that引导宾语从句、to、this、that、IT
to到;that引导宾语从句,无意义;this这;it它。
4.We ________ draw in the library book. We should follow library rules.
A.may B.must C.mustn’t D.needn’t
【答案】C
【知识点】must否定表示禁止、mustn't、must、May
may可以,可能;must必须;mustn’t不准,禁止;needn’t不必,不需要。根据“We should follow library rules”可知,此处强调“禁止”涂画书籍。故选C。
5.The price of the house is too high for us, so we can’t ________ it.
A.afford B.avoid C.sell D.send
【答案】A
【知识点】动词辨析、send(sent sent)、sell(sold sold)、avoid、afford
根据“The price of the house is too high for us,”可知,房子的价格太高了,我们负担不起,故选A。
6.He was reading in the library ________ it was raining ________ outside.
A.when; heavy B.while; heavily C.when; heavily D.while; heavy
7.—It is too hot. Would you mind ________ the window?
—Certainly not. It’s good for our health.
A.close B.opening C.open D.closing

根据“mind”可知,mind doing sth.“介意做某事”,固定搭配,结合“It’s too hot.”
8.I don’t want this jacket. Please show me ______.
A.others B.the other C.another D.the others
【答案】C
【知识点】other/another/the other/others/the others、others、another
others其他人;the other指两者中的另一个;another另外的一个;the others指其余的人或物,后不接名词。根据“I don’t want this jacket.”
【点睛】the others, another, the other, others的区别和各自的用法:
1. the others:其余的,相当于the other的复数形式,特指某一范围内的其他全部。
如:Two boys will go to the zoo, and the others will stay at home.

A.called B.calling C.to call D.calls
【答案】A

To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t use screens for long hours.

①For better sleep, people often ask if they should share their bed with a pet. Before we get to that, let’s think about the other side: Is sleeping with you good for your pet?
②“In a word, it is a very good thing for animals to sleep with their people.” said Dr. Dana Varble, the chief veterinary (兽医学) officer for the North American Veterinary Community.
③According to Varble, pets who share their human’s bed may have a “higher trust level and a closer relationship with the humans that are in their lives”. Also, sharing beds with humans is good for pets’ health, including increases in oxytocin (催产素) and dopamine (多巴胺).
④Then, is it good for you to sleep with a pet? Experts have traditionally said no because you might not get a good sleep. “Sleep of dogs (and cats) is not continuous (连续的) and they will get up and walk on the bed, stepping on people.
30.Why do experts think sleeping with a pet is not good for people?
A.It may be bad for the relationship between pets and their people.
B.Pets may awake people from sleep by walking on the bed or stepping on people.
C.Pets in the bedroom could make people with depression or anxiety feel better.
D.It could cause insomnia for old people or patients.

A.an animal lover with depression B.an old man with insomnia
C.a child tired of noise D.an adult with heart problems

36.I can talk to someone I trust.
37.True friends respect my choices and encourage me to be better. I should avoid those who pressure me into doing bad things. Good friends help me grow, not lead me to trouble.

Others go along with the group because they want to try something new that their peers are doing.” Because some children want to be liked by others, some worry about being laughed at if they don’t follow the group, and others want to try new things that peers are doing.
36.根据“When you find it difficult to deal with peer pressure, you can talk to someone you trust.” I can talk to someone I trust.

Dear Tom,
How is everything going? I am writing to tell you something about my family’s 4-day trip in Youyang.
The first day of my trip was on 18th, April, 2022. My parents and I went around Youyang city and visited the Custom Street. Besides, we tried a lot of local food, like fried cakes, green bean rice noodles and oil tea. How delicious they were! We also danced Baishou Dance. But we were not good at dancing at all. It’s just for fun. On the second day, we went to Taohuayuan. Then we went fishing and watched folk culture performance there. We visited Dayou Cave as well. On the third day, we visited Gongtan Ancient Town. Do you believe that we went boating there? There were also a lot of old buildings for us to enjoy, and we also enjoyed the beauty of Wujiang. On the last day, we went to Changpu Prairie. We went horse riding and had a picnic.
How time flies! We are so relaxed after the trip. I hope to have a trip again.
Best wishes,

Life on weekends is an important part of our daily life. How can we make our weekends more meaningful? Here are some of my suggestions.
First of all, the weekend is a great time for family to get together. It’s good to help our parents do some housework. That can help us understand each other better and show our love for them. Secondly, we should spend time developing our interests and hobbies at the weekend. For example, I would like to choose some books to read and communicate with others after reading. Thirdly, we can take part in volunteering activities, like visiting the old people’s home or doing some cleaning in public places.
