A. afford B. manage C. control D. supply

A. That’s too bad. B. It’s not a big deal.
C. How come? D. I should be careful!

In China, a group of people help old people by using a red card, known as the Pat Card. The card, attached to (附在) their backpacks, carries the message, “If you need help, just pat (轻拍) me.” Behind the idea is Zhao Chen.
Zhao’s story began in 2014. “When my daughter was born, my mother came to Xi’an to help but got lost. A student helped her find the way to the hospital,” Zhao said. “I was moved by the kind act and decided to do something similar to help old strangers.” Zhao even created the Pat Card to help old people.
Zhao kept his acts of kindness private until early 2024. In September 2024, Zhao saw an old man moving slowly through a subway station in Xi’an. Zhao guided him out of the station, called a taxi, and sent him home. Along the way, some strangers joined in—a food seller offered the man a cheap meal, and the driver gave them a free ride. This made Zhao realize the power of working together. Then he created an open call for mutual (相互的) help, and many volunteers came together to help old people.

Summer brings high temperatures to many parts. This is both good and bad news for gardeners and their gardens. Jessica Damiano, a gardener from New York, knows this well. She says the heat has both positive and negative effects on gardening.
Some plants don’t like hot weather at all. Luckily, there are ways to help them. First, give them more water so the soil stays wet. Cover the soil with thick materials—this keeps the ground cool and saves water. For young plants, provide shade for them. “Even a simple umbrella works,” says Jessica.
However, heat isn’t all bad for gardening. Some plants grow well in hot weather, and the heat can stop some pests (害虫). For example, certain pests that hurt onions and corn cannot survive in hot weather—the heat naturally keeps them away. Besides, some plants flowered two weeks earlier because of the heat.
Some pests enjoy hot weather, but gardeners can still stop them. Soapy water (肥皂水) works well for killing these pests. Salt also kills pests, but don’t use too much—it’s not good for the soil. Another method is to use broken eggshells (蛋壳). The sharp pieces keep pests away, and later, the eggshells help plants grow.
With these simple tips, gardens can grow healthy plants and beautiful flowers even in hot weather.
66. What can we do to help plants that don’t like hot weather?
A Give them less water. B. Add some salt to the soil.
C. Put thick covers on the soil. D. Provide young plants with more sunlight.
67. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Some plants. B. Onions. C. Corn. D. Some pests.
68. Why does the writer write this text?
A. To encourage more people to grow plants.
B. To show how to protect onions and corn.
C. To share tips for gardening in hot weather.
D. To describe Jessica’s daily work in the garden.

Many people believe that what they eat before bed can change how they sleep and what they dream about. Some even say that eating cheese at night can give them bad dreams. Some scientists think your bedtime snack might be part of the reason.
In Canada, some researchers asked over 1,000 university students questions about their food, sleep, and dreams. The students also shared what they thought about how food might change their dreams.
One out of every three students said they often had bad dreams. About 40% of them believed eating late or eating certain food made it harder to sleep. Only a few—just 5.5%—said they thought some food changed their dreams such as sweets and dairy (乳制的) food.
The study also showed that people who were allergic (过敏的) to some food or couldn’t drink milk were more likely to have sleep problems and bad dreams. This might be because eating dairy food when you can’t digest (消化) it well makes your stomach hurt. It can cause you to have bad dreams.
A researcher named Tore Nielsen said that for some people, changing what they eat could help stop bad dreams.
But he added that they needed to study more people of different ages and with different eating habits to learn more about this.
69. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. Many students eat a lot at night.
B. Most students sleep well after dinner.
C. Some students think food changes their sleep.
D. All students believe food makes them dream.
70. Which group of people might need to be careful about bedtime snacks?
A. People who sleep a lot. B. People who eat lunch late.
C. People who don’t like cheese. D. People who are allergic to some food.
71. Why may some people have their bad dreams more easily?
A. Because they go to bed early every day.
B. Because they always eat the same food at night.
C. Because their sleep isn’t good because of food.
D. Because they have happy dreams that turn bad.
72. What needs to be done next according to Tore Nielsen?
A. Testing people from many different groups.
B. Stopping the study and trying something else.
C. Giving students only one kind of food.
D. Asking people to eat sweets at night.
【答案】69. C 70. D 71. C 72. A
【解析】

第四段指出“…eating dairy food when you can’t digest it well makes your stomach hurt. It can cause you to have bad dreams.”结合上文提到食物会使“harder to sleep”,说明因为食物导致的睡眠质量差是产生或感知噩梦的原因。
【72题详解】
最后一段指出“…they needed to study more people of different ages and with different eating habits to learn more about this.”这表明Tore Nielsen认为下一步需要对来自不同群体(不同年龄和习惯)的人进行测试。

阅读下面短文,并用英语回答问题,请注意每小题后面的词数要求。
Leo was a twelve-year-old boy who always wanted new things—a better bike, the latest games. One summer, he wanted money to buy a special soccer ball. His parents said, “Why not make it?”
Leo saw his neighbor, Mr. Clark, an old man with a big, messy garden. “Can I help with your garden for some money?” Leo asked. Mr. Clark smiled, “Yes, but I can only pay a little.”
Leo agreed. He worked hard every afternoon. He pulled weeds (杂草), watered plants, and swept the paths. It was hot and tiring. Mr. Clark often sat nearby, telling stories about the flowers and the trees he planted.
One day, after three weeks, the garden looked beautiful. Leo felt proud. When Mr. Clark gave him the money, it was much less than the ball cost. Leo was upset.
Seeing Leo’s disappointment, Mr. Clark said softly, “Look at this garden now. You didn’t just grow plants; you grew beauty and peace.”
Leo looked at the colorful flowers, the clean paths, and Mr. Clark’s happy face. He suddenly understood. He felt a warm, happy feeling inside—much better than getting any new toy.
Leo bought a simpler ball with the money and kept helping Mr. Clark. He learned a very important lesson: True happiness often comes from helping others and seeing the good change you can make.

A. Give them less water.

C Because their sleep isn’t good because of food.
D. Because they have happy dreams that turn bad.
72. What needs to be done next according to Tore Nielsen?
A. Testing people from many different groups.
B. Stopping the study and trying something else.
C. Giving students only one kind of food.
D. Asking people to eat sweets at night.
