He was most kind, and, as it turned out, much faster and more comfortable than a bus. I outfitted him with an elegant blanket, but even so, the first few days I was embarrassed when I went out with him. Everyone pointed at me. Many people laughed. “Look at that crazy man with the elephant,” they said. And the traffic police gave me such dirty looks that I was ashamed.
