At just 12 years old,Mia DaPonte has made history by becoming the youngest female Master Scuba Diver in the
United States. This honorable title, awarded by organizations like PADI,represents an advanced level of training that
most divers never achieve.Mia's remarkable joumey began with a simple inspiration:leaming that her mother had
been a certified diver since high school.
Despite her early interest,Mia had to wait until the minimum age of 10 to begin formal training. On her tenth
birthday, she started in the challenging waters near her Rhode Island home-known for cold temperatures and poor
visibility.Eaming her initial Open Water Diver cerificate required persistence,a quality her instrctors immediately
recognized. One noted,"She sets her mind to something and gets it done."
Over the next two years,Mia dedicated herself to the demanding process.PADI courses combine practical diving
with classroom study, and Mia progressed through several leaming skills like first aid, underwater navigation, and fish
identification. Her mother became her constantdiving buddy"by nrolling in the same courses, providing crucial
support.Mia's commitment is reflected in her78 logged dives, far more than the 50 required for master certification.
The final step presented a unique challenge:Mia had to wait until she tumed 12 to take her last two required
courses. To completc the Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver certifications, her family traveled to Mexico. There,
on her 12th birthday, she passed the advanced course. The next day,she faced the strenuous Rescue Diver test.which
included multiple dives and demonstrating the ability to rescue and bring back to life an unconscious adult diver-the
most difficult task of all.
While proud of her accomplishment,Mia sees it as just the beginning. She plans to pursue further diving
education and dreams of becoming a marine biologist, with a special passion for studying sharks through tagging and
tracking.

A.A lack of qualified diving instructors.
B.Challenging storms and currents.
C.Cold and low-visibility water conditions.
D.The absence of required persistence.
25.What was key to Mia's progress during her two-year training?

The dawn chorus of birdsong has inspired poets and nature lovers for thousands of years, but the reason why
birds start the day this way is a lasting mystery. Now,a series of experiments in zebra finches()suggests that
while darkness prevents singing, birds build up a stronger motivation to sing in the night that causes them to burst into
song at dawn.
Satoshi Kojima at the Korea Brain Research Institute in Daegu,South Korea, and his colleagues studied
laboratory-raised zebra finches in carefully controlled lighting conditions to adjust the timing of light and dark cycles.
The team first pushed back the time at which the finches were exposed to sudden bright light to 3 hours later than

the actual dawn. The birds were awake but stayed silent in the artificial darkness, and when the light eventually did
come on,the birds sang more intensely than usual. When the lights came on 3 hours earlier than true dawn, the birds
still broke into a chorus, but without the same intensity as when they were forced to wait.
"The birds are alrcady awake in the dark before the lights come on,"he says."But their natural singing is held
back by the darkness. This holding back increases their motivation to sing, leading to a high rate of singing as
rebound immediatcly after the lights are turned on."
While this study only looked at one species, similar drivers may apply to other bird species,Kojima says.Diego
Gil at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid,Spain, calls for caution. There are "numerodifferences
between species in how, when and what birds sing in the dawn chorus",he says."This explains why many different
explanations have been proposed to understand the phenomenon."
28.What did the zebra finch experiments aim to discover?
A.Where birds stay at night.
B.Why birds sing at dawn.
C.When birds sleep most.
D.How birds communicate.
29.How did the researchers carry out the experiment?
A.By changing the timing of artificial dawn.
B.By adjusting light strength in the lab.
C.By comparing darkness and dawn behavior.
D.By recording songs after real dawn.
30.What does the underlined word "rebound"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Sudden drop.
B.Delayed effect.
C.Rapid response.
D.Repeated action.
31.What does Diego Gil suggest about applying the findings broadly?
A.It is widely applicable.
B.It needs careful thought
C.It depends on species'habits.
D.It ignores key differences.

Hydrogen fuel-cell(氢撚料电池)vehicles aren't just sources for science fiction or far-out experiments.Cars
fueled by hydrogen, like the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, are already here, and hydrogen fuel-cell technology is
actively evolving and benefiting from billions of dollars in research. So,why are hydrogen cars virtually non-existent
on U.S.roads today?
"The answer is simple:economics,"Sergey Paltsev,a senior scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative told Popular
Science.Politicians and automakers once advocated the fuel cell, which turns the chemical energy of hydrogen into
electricity to drive an electric motor,as the future of passenger automobiles, but the falling cost of batteries and a large
mumber ofelectrical fueling infrastructure (have propelled battery-electric cars well into the lead.
A big switch to hydrogen cars would require cost-cutting and enormous infrastructure development. The
Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center shows 55 public hydrogen fueling station locations in the U.S.
today, almost only in California, while more than 68,000 active public electric vehicle charging stations across the
country.
"Nothing is going to change next year,or probably not in the next five years, but there are brighter pathways for
hydrogen vehicles,"said Paltsev. It turns out that hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles have advantageous applications in
medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks and aviation ()Besides,battery electric vehicles can be problematic when
you have problems with range, fueling time or heavy loads.
The current impractical application of hydrogen passenger vehicles in places like the U.S.is not a reason tojust
give up"on hydrogen fuel-cell tech."We may need it for many other reasons in the future,"cautioned Paltsev, noting
that geopolitical issues could prevent access to raw materials for batteries, thus making hydrogen cars suddenly more
economically workable.
32.Why are hydrogen cars not commonly seen on U.S.roads today?
A.Lack of public awareness.
B.Unavailability of hydrogen fuel.
C.Limited research and development.
D.High costs and insufficient infrastructure

33.What is Sergey Paltsev's attitude towards hydrogen vehicles in the future?
A.Hopeful.
B.Doubtful.
C.Indifferent.
D.Confused.
34.What can be learned about hydrogen fuel-cell tech from the passage?
A.It is already cost-effective for passenger vehicles.
B.It fails to solve the problems with range or fueling time.
C.It is practicable due to potential issues resulting from geopolitics.
D.It has unsatisfactory applications in heavy-duty trucks and aviation.
35.What would be the best title to this passage?
A.Battery-Electric Vehicles:A Glorious Era
B.Hydrogen Vehicles:Struggling Yet Promising
C.Why Are We Not Driving Electric Powered Cars?

"Why are you wearing your red dress?"asked Sherry,a girl in my sixth-grade class. The look on my face must
have indicated that I didn't understand the question. She asked again."Your red dress..Why are you wearing it?Today
is a blue-dress day."
I rarely noticed what other people wore,so it never occurred to me that anyone would notice I had only two
school dresses:a red dress with little yellow flowers and a blue one.The red dress was my favorite,so I wore it on
Mondays and Tuesdays, the blue one on Wednesdays and Thursdays, then back to red each Friday.
"Oh,"I stammered."I dropped chili on it yesterday.I,uh,can't wear it until Mama washes it."There wasno
judgment in Sherry's question, just curiosity. For the first time in my life, though,I wondered,"Do my friends feel
sorry for me?Am I poor?"
After school,I hung my red dress in the closet I shared with my sister and went outside to sulk ()I
climbed to the lowest branch of an oak tree and stared at my tiny house. My mother had bought it six months earlier,
shortly after my father died from a heart attack.
I made friends in our new town and visited their homes.Sherry lived in a brand-new house with a piano in her
living room;another friend's huge old house had more rooms than I could count.Still,my friends preferred coming to
my house probably because they were crazy about my mom,who baked chocolate cakes or buttered biscuits, played
board games with us after supper, and read books in her soft voice.Their parents were nice but never played with us.
I'd never compared my clothes,my little house,or my life with anyone else's until that day.
Mom called through the screen door for me to set the table.I climbed down and shuffled into the kitchen. She
was mashing potatoes in a big bowl.I reached for dinner plates, asking softly,"Mama, are we poor?"
