I’ve been skiing (滑雪) since I was eight or nine years old and I’ve been to many places like China, Pakistan, Nepal and so on. But in my home country, the USA, I came closest to death.
It was April 1st, 2011, I was skiing in the Tetons with my friends Jeremy and Xavier. That day, I heard someone cry loudly, I turned around and saw the whole mountain start to move behind me. It was a massive avalanche (大雪崩), cars, buses (积雪) was coming straight down the mountain behind me. I felt the snow push me forward, hundreds of meters and then cover me. It was so heavy that I couldn’t breathe. And then it pushed me forward again and up, and could see the trees at the bottom (底部) of the valley (峡谷). For a few seconds I actually stopped being afraid. “OK, I’m going all the way to the bottom!” I thought. Then the snow pushed me again down the mountain another 450 meters. In the end, I felt the avalanche slow down and I was just pushed right out of the snow at the bottom of the valley. It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to reach me. They couldn’t believe it when they saw me, I was so lucky.
Has the experience changed me? Do I think about life differently? I don’t know, maybe.

A desert(沙漠) is a difficult place for animals to live, and some have unusual ways of making a living. The Texas lizard has a strange way to keep itself safe. When a predator(掠食动物) gets too close, blood goes out from the lizard’s eyes. Then it breathes in much air to make its body look bigger. Another interesting desert animal is the javelina. To make a predator afraid and run away, the javelina bravely faces the animal. It makes a big noise with its teeth. It raises the hard hairs on its back to make itself look bigger. The javelina also gives off a strong smell as a warning when it is afraid. This smell is so strong that javelinas are also called “smelly pigs”. Javelinas keep safe by staying close to their family, so there’s a good chance they can make a predator change its mind!
You might think a rain forest would be easier to live in than a desert. After all, there's plenty of food and water in a rain forest. But that also means a lot of animals live there. Being able to climb trees is a useful skill in the rain forest. It allows an animal to keep away from predators. The sloth spends most of its life in the treetops. Its strong, curved claws(爪子) help it climb and hang upside down from branches. The sloth also moves very slowly. It does this so it’s not noticed. The aye-aye lives only in the rain forest of Madagascar, near Africa. The aye-aye is a night animal. This helps it to stay safe from daytime predators. However, the number of the aye-aye keeps going down and they may die out. People have hunted it because they think it brings bad luck. Also, much of the rain forest in Madagascar has been cut down, which has destroyed the aye-aye’s home. Today there are laws(法律) to keep people from killing it.
27.What is the passage mainly about?
A.What the animals in the desert look like.
B.How the animals in the rain forest find their food.
C.How the animals in the desert and in the rain forest stay safe.
D.What animals are in danger of losing their living environment.
28.How does a lizard protect itself when a predator gets too close?
A.It climbs trees. B.It makes a big noise.
C.It gives off a strong smell. D.Blood goes out from its eyes.
29.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The aye-aye is a welcome animal in Africa.
B.There is no food, no water and no danger in the desert.
C.The lizard and the javelina can make their bodies look bigger to keep safe.
D.It is really dangerous for the sloth to live in the forest no matter where it is.
D
About six years ago, I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy — who could not have been more than seven or eight years old — replied. “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident remained in my mind because it confirmed(证实)my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed”, that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school.
Undoubtedly(无疑),a change in children has increased steadily(平稳)in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.
Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?
Human development is depended not only on born biological states, but also on patterns of gaining social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves(牵涉)learning the secrets of the new social positions. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages(分阶段). Traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation(揭示)machine has been equipped in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation(诱惑), many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more attractive moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children will gain. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
30.According to the author, feeling depressed is ________.
A.a sure sign of a mental problem in a child
B.a mental state present in all humans, including children
C.something that cannot be avoided in children’s mental development
D.something hardly to be expected in a young child
31.Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world ________.
A.through connection with society B.gradually and under guidance
C.naturally without being taught D.through watching television
32.According to the author, today’s children seem adultlike because of ________.
A.the widespread influence of television B.the poor arrangement of teaching content
C.the fast pace of human scientific development D.the rising standard of living
33.What does the author think of communication through print for children?
A.It enables children to gain more social information.
B.It develops children’s interest in reading and writing.
C.It helps children to read and write well.
D.It can control what children are to learn.
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Do you like to travel alone? Or do you think it’s better to travel with friends? If you’re still deciding, please read on. I will explain the advantages of both ways.
One of the great things about traveling alone is that you can decide where you go and what you eat. You’ll be surprised at what you discover about yourself without any influence.
Traveling alone really shows you what you’re made of and helps you to discover inner strength you didn’t know you had. Besides, it also gives you time to think, learn and grow. When your eyes are wide open, you’ll get a whole new outlook on the world.
It’s easy to think that traveling alone is lonely. Although that may sometimes be true, you’re hardly ever alone. When you travel in a one-person team, this can provide a chance for you to enjoy the most interesting part of travel—communicating with the local people.
In fact, traveling to know more about the world is not easy. There’s research to be done, flights to be booked and choices to be made. One of the main advantages of traveling with friends is being able to share these things and support each other through the process, even if it’s just someone who will wait with your bag when you go to the bathroom.
Just as your mother always says, it’s true that traveling with others can give you a sense of safety, especially if you’re new to travel. You know that if you get lost or have your wallet stolen, there’s someone to hold your hand when you try to explain your situation in a foreign police station. There’s no right or wrong way to travel. Whether you travel alone or team up with friends, it is up to you.
34.What can you decide when you travel alone?
35.According to the writer, what is the most interesting part of traveling in a one-person team?
36.Why isn’t it easy to know more about the world by traveling?
37.What do you think of traveling with friends? Why? (List at least two reasons.)

【答案】30.D 31.B 32.A 33.D
根据第二段“As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were ‘depressed’, that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school.”可知,作者认为对于如此小年龄的孩子来说,抑郁是很难想象的。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据第五段“Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages(分阶段). Traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.”可知从传统意义来讲,小孩应该在成年人的指导下逐渐了解世界。故选B。
32.细节理解题。根据第六段“Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults.”可知,是电视的普及,让孩子出现了这样的特征。故选A。
33.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children will gain. ”可知,作者认为通过印刷的方式可以控制孩子所学的东西。故选D。

【答案】
34.You can decide where you go and what you eat.
35.Communicating with the local people.

The Resolution Made Me Better
I’ve made many resolutions in the past two years. There’s no doubt that if I never give up, the resolutions can make me better.
One of my most unforgettable resolutions was in my Grade 7. In my final examination, I received a terrible score. I was so afraid of facing my parents. It reminded me that I used to play on my phone while doing my homework. It made me feel ashamed. When parents talked with me in the evening, I made a silent resolution. I decided to hand the phone over to Mum. At the beginning, it was hard to control myself. Gradually, I got used to doing my homework without the phone.
Now, I fall in love with basketball instead. When I finish studying, I like to play it with my friends. I got to know, as long as I stick to my resolution, everything is possible.

When I was in primary school, I enjoyed learning about interesting things. But one thing 13 me. I could never get a perfect mark on my math tests like some of the girls did.
Every time I brought home my report card, before my mom read it, she could guess what the math score was — it had always been sitting just above 90. My mom even 14 about it. She said sweetly, “Could you bring home a perfect mark just once?”
One day I talked to my mom about this. She asked me to think about why this was so. I thought about it. After a lot of thinking, I understood what my problem was.
“Mom, some questions are really simple. I know how to solve them right away. So I work them out fast.” “Oh?” Mom listened carefully. “Yes. They are so easy that I get 15 . And I make mistakes like copying my answer with an extra (额外的) zero. And I don’t check.”
“I see,” Mom said. “When the questions are simple, you are not careful enough. So any mistake 16 you the perfect mark.”
She continued, “But I don’t think copying an extra zero is a 17 mistake. If you’re calculating (计算) a number of a spaceship, extra zero may cause a total failure of the launch (发射).”
“I see. I’ll try to be fast and careful, too.” Our 18 continued. “How about the difficult questions?” asked Mom.
“I tried to solve them, but they are hard.”
Mom laughed, “Difficult questions take a long time to solve. The first thing you have to do is to understand the question. Then you do your best to solve it. And you never give up easily, right?”
Mom’s 19 made it really easy. I could hardly 20 until the next math exam.
You know what? A few weeks later, I did finally get a perfect mark!
