In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera performed in London by professionals from Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. Ghaffar fell in love with the beautiful voices, colorful costumes, excellent shows and so on. So after a year, he arrived in China alone and became a student of Beijing Opera. At the age of 32, he had to learn with teenage students every day, starting from the most basic training of the legs and waist. At that time, he was mostly troubled by the dialogue in Beijing Opera. To him, it was the biggest problem. But he tried his best to practice it. 4 years later, he began to learn to perform the Monkey King. He usually arrived at the workroom an hour earlier than the other performers and he also bought books and CDs to understand the character better. Finally, he once won a top international prize for performing the Monkey King. To help more people enjoy Beijing Opera, Ghaffar often teaches the traditional art form in schools in the United States, Britain and other countries. That’s an easy question to answer. Art is a painting, a drawing or a sculpture. Now there are new items to add to the list. Art is a dead shark in a glass case. Art is an unmade bed. Art is a video of a group of people standing completely still for sixty minutes. A new group of young artists began to produce work that challenged the accepted idea of what art is and the role the artist should play in society. This group came to be known as the YBAs — the Young British Artists. The art of the YBAs does not just stick to painting and sculpture. It uses all kinds of different materials to express the feeling of the artist. Damien Hirst is the most famous of the YBAs. The Shark in the Box is his work and is meant to express his own fear of dying. The shark stands for death. Right now, it is harmless. But eventually it will come for you. There is nothing to be done about it. Traditionally, artists have a message. They use their skills to lead us to enlightenment (启迪). The message of the YBAs is that they cannot do this. They are just as mixed up and confused as everybody else. A journalist once asked Damien Hirst what his next idea was for an artwork. “I don’t know what I’m going to do next. I never know what I’m going to do next,” he replied. Another YBA, Tracy Emin recently produced a work called Bed. This is just her own bed with the sheets disarranged and dirty. And the message? “Look at me — I’m a mess.” Some artists work with the public in producing their work. Gillian Wearing filmed a group of people dressed as policemen trying to keep still for 60 minutes while standing on top of a table. At the end of that time, the table falls apart and everyone falls to the floor. You can try to be a good citizen and a respectable member of the community. But don’t try too hard or the pressure will be too much. Art mirrors the state of society. In the work of the YBAs we can see a society on the threshold (开端) of the future — a bit worried, a bit excited and wondering what is going to happen next. The YBAs can’t guide us, but they can make the journey more interesting. 5.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?( ) A.The shark. B.Death. C.The artwork. D.The fear. 6.What can be inferred from Tracy’s work Bed?( ) A.She needs to be taken care of. B.She sees the world as a dirty one. C.She compares herself to the bed. D.She hopes for better living conditions. 7.In Gillian’s work, which of the following refers to a person who tries too hard?( ) A.The table. B.The floor. C.60 minutes. D.The group of people. 8.What is the main purpose of the text?( ) A.To show the YBAs have made a difference in art. B.To spread the message in the YBAs’ works. C.To encourage more artists to join the YBAs. D.To introduce the YBAs and their artworks. C (2025·河南南阳期中)China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is known for its dynamic music and traditional dances dating back to ancient times. The Twelve Muqam, which is known as the mother of Uyghur music, is a musical form that consists of sung poetry, stories and music. It consists of more than 300 different melodies, some 4,000 lines of lyrics and takes around 24 hours to play in its entirety. Like other traditions in Xinjiang, the art is being passed on to future generations. Muqam music is not only an artistic creation with a long history, but also a record of communication between China and the countries to the west of it in human history. It can be found in 19 countries and regions in Central, South, and West Asia, and North Africa, and along the ancient Silk Road running across the autonomous region. In November of 2005, UNESCO (United Nations Educational Cultural and Scientific Organisation) declared the Art of Chinese Xinjiang Uyghur Muqam as a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of humanity. Xinjiang Uyghur Muqam is a mixture of songs, dances, and folk and classical music, and is characterised by a variety of content, dance styles, musical morphology, and instruments used. The songs differ in rhyme and are performed solo as well as in groups. The lyrics contain not only folk songs but also poems written by classical Uyghur masters. Thus, the songs show a wide range of styles such as poetry, proverbs, folk narrative, and popular topics such as the praise of love and reflection on life, showing the history and present-day life of the Uyghur society. Today, the Twelve Muqam is gaining more attention at festivals and special occasions in Xinjiang. And folk artists are making an effort to pass on this ancient art performance with energy. 9.The Twelve Muqam is made up of the following except .( ) A.paintings B.stories C.sung poetry D.music 10.What can we learn from the content of the Twelve Muqam?( ) A.It has nothing to do with history. B.It reflects history with no connection to present life. C.It fully reflects social history and present-day life. D.It has nothing to do with present life. 11.What can we infer from the passage?( ) A.The Twelve Muqam is only popular in Xinjiang. B.There are no solo performances in Twelve Muqam. C.Artists are not keen on passing on Twelve Muqam. D.The Twelve Muqam has artistic and historical significance. 12.What is the main idea of the passage?( ) A.Introduction to the Twelve Muqam. B.History of music in Xinjiang Uyghur. C.Importance of folk songs in Uyghur. D.Influence of the Silk Road on music. Ⅱ.阅读七选五 (2025·河南驻马店期中)Making art is good for your mind and body. Whether it’s woodworking, sewing or oil painting, the act of creation can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood. But is it hard to make art?13.( ) You don’t need to be an artist with a capital “A”. We tend to think that only people who are very skilled at art can call themselves artists. But actually, anyone can be an artist. 14.( ) No matter your skill level, you’ll be able to feel all the good things that come with making art. Figure out your mode of creative expression. Start with what you enjoy, but keep an open mind.15.( ) You can do that through numerous activities: finger painting, cooking, knitting (编织), etc. — the sky’s the limit. And don’t feel like you have to stick to one thing. Mix it up — do whatever you’re in the mood for. 16.( ) Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. Mess around! Let yourself get lost in the process and just play. That brings those feelings of stress relief and positive energy. You don’t even need to complete a project or like what you’re making to feel those health benefits. Sometimes, when we don’t like what we are making, it frees us up to play and explore new ideas, because we have let go of expectations. Think about making art like any healthy habit, such as eating well or exercising. Just as you make time to work, exercise and hang out with family and friends, you should make time for your artistic practice.17.( ) A.Everyone is able to express creatively. B.Making art is good for your mind and body. C.Focus on the making, and let go of expectations. D.And don’t feel like you have to stick to one thing. E.Anything that engages your creative mind is good for you. F.Here are some things you need to know to start your creative art habit. G.While there are no rules for how much time you should devote to it, do it as much as you can. 1.not your pity but your help 2.in the shade of the big tree 3.performed badly 4.is talented in 素养能力提升 Ⅰ. But he tried his best ...the character better. The Shark in the Box ...come for you.
