Section Ⅱ LESSON 1 ROOTS AND SHOOTS
ROOTS①& SHOOTS②
Most people suffer from what is known as “Just-me-ism③”.What is that?[1]Well, say you leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, leave a light on when you go out or you drop a piece of litter and can’t be bothered④ to pick it up.[2]You know that all those things are wrong, but so what? “What difference can it possibly make?” you say to yourself.“There are millions of⑤ people in the world and I’m just me.How can it matter if I leave one little tap running, one little light on or leave a little piece of litter on the road? And anyway, no one will know.” [3]Of course, it wouldn’t matter⑥ if there were just a few people in the world. But just think of all the millions of people saying to themselves:“It doesn’t matter. It’s just me.And, anyway, no one knows.” Millions of gallons⑦ of water would be wasted; millions of lights would be left on; millions of pieces of litter would be dropped. And all of this would be very harmful.

Do you want to make Roots & Shoots rooted in everyone’s heart? Do you want to be a part of a community for a shared future? You cannot be absent.
It is by acting together, in this exciting way, that we can involve thousands — millions — of people, and this is what is going to change the world.

(2025·杭州二中检测)Recycling is beneficial for the environment. It can also benefit a community in surprising ways. Mateo Lange, 15, knows this well. On weekends, he can be found sorting through glass and plastic bottles and aluminum cans in his hometown of Indian River, Michigan, where he leads a community recycling program.
Mateo launched the program in 2020 when he was just 11 and in the sixth grade, playing baseball with the Northern Michigan Cyclones, a new team that needed funds for traveling to tournaments. Mateo came up with a plan to deal with this need.
“There were cans and bottles always thrown around the road,” he recalled. In Michigan, these can be collected and exchanged for cash. With his dad’s help, Mateo started a bottle and can drive. It raised $7,500. “We collected so much money in just a few weeks,” he says. “So I thought, why not keep this going as long as we can?”
Since then, Mateo says, his recycling effort has raised $350,000 and helped at least 50 local youth groups. It has also prevented more than 2 million bottles and cans from littering the roadside and polluting Michigan’s lakes and rivers.
In 2023, Mateo was awarded a Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. “It feels humbling,” Mateo says, when asked about all he’s accomplished with his cleanup effort. “I am happy knowing that all these teams and clubs and kids around the community are benefitting.”
Mateo believes everyone can — and should — be of service. “Just do a little bit to help make the world a little bit of a better place,” he says. “Be creative,” he adds. “Have an idea and build on it.”

(2025·河南实验中学检测)A survey has found that more and more British people are taking steps to a more eco-friendly living as climate change becomes a bigger problem. According to the survey, green living is on the rise among British people, with 79% of participants saying that they are greener than they were ten years ago.
The survey including 2,000 British people found that four out of five British people say they are greener than they were a decade ago. 61% of participants believe that they have a duty to live a greener lifestyle, and 70% want to keep making lifestyle changes to be more eco-friendly.
What actions are people taking? The survey found that reuse, eating less meat and avoiding single-use plastics are the most common eco-friendly actions. It also found that people do not understand which actions can be the most helpful for the environment.
For example, 53% of participants didn’t know that cars have a higher carbon footprint (碳排放量) than trains, and only 19% are now trying to travel more by train to reduce the pollution.
Of course, this is just one study with a group of 2,000 people. Even so, there does seem to be a move towards greener living. For example, according to the official website, the reusing rate increased in England between 2010 and 2019. Research by NatCen Social Research found a big drop in meat eating between 2012 and 2018.
While we shouldn’t celebrate too soon — there is still lots of work to be done to fight climate change, any move towards greener living is certainly good news!
