Learning for life
[1]The more I learn, the better I know how much there is still left to
learn.[2]As I journey through my life, I have become aware that
acquiring knowledge is not only a means by which you can better

individual, you do not know. The ability to admit this should not be perceived as① a weakness, but as a strength.[3]I once had an art teacher, pointing out that it is not only what you can see that is important, but also

Earlier research had suggested we’re best
at learning grammar in early childhood. Then we hit a dead end around
age 5. It’s supposed to be much harder for older kids. The time when
people can learn the rules and structure of a language well appears to last
until around age 17 or 18. “But that’s not so,” says psychologist
Joshua Hartshorne.
Hartshorne asked friends to take an online English grammar test.
After completing the test, volunteers answered questions about where
they had lived, the languages they had spoken from birth and the age at
which they first started learning English. Hartshorne also asked how long
they had lived in an English-speaking country. As he had hoped, people
shared the test widely online. This let Hartshorne’s group study the
answers from 669,498 native and non-native speakers of English. The
researchers used statistics to find out when people with different English-
speaking experiences reached their top grammar ability.
If people moved to a new country and began speaking English by age
10 to 12, they finally spoke it as well as folks who had learned both
English and another language from birth. But both groups scored a little
worse than people who spoke English only, the researchers found. The
test results showed that around age 17, people’s ability to learn
grammar took a sharp drop. And those who started learning English after
age 10 or 12 never reached the same level of English skillfulness as people
who started younger. Why?The researchers think it’s because they had fewer years to practice before their skills dropped off at surprise:

Language learning did not end at 17. People’s English skills kept improving a little until around age 30, the new study found. And this was true among both native speakers and those who learned English as a second language. Still, most language learning happened by age 20, the new study decided.

Sara Thompson showed great effort in
getting a degree in teaching, something that not many students can do.
She was very happy when she finished school at the State University of
New York at Buffalo, and she was the first in her big family to get a
college degree.
Sara grew up with eight other brothers and sisters on a farm in
Buffalo, New York. Her dad had a job that wasn’t on the farm, and
her mom took care of the farm with the kids. Upon graduating from high
school, Sara went to a school close by to learn skills, and she worked
part-time to pay for her classes because her family didn’t have extra
money for college. After she finished that school, she kept working to
help her younger brothers and sisters pay for their education.
Now, Sara is married and has three kids. She decided to go back to
school to get a better job and to help her family better, while doing
something she really likes: teaching. She chose the program at the State
University of New York at Buffalo because it was close to her home. She
could drive to her classes and be back home in the evening to take care of
her kids. Sara’s family helped her a lot while she was studying: her
husband worked extra jobs to pay for things, and her mom, who was
65, sometimes looked after the kids.
Even though it was hard, she did well in school and graduated with

spending time with her kids and attending important family events.
“There were nights when it was very hard to choose between being with
my kids and studying for tests or writing papers,” she says. But her
kids learned a lot from seeing their mom get her degree. Sara is the first in

family — she shows that you can do anything if you work hard.

Mary Dickins had been a member of
the audience at poetry nights before and knew “the poetry clap”. She
made a polite tapping of fingers. But when she made her debut (首次演
出) as a performer at the age of 62 at the legendary Bang Said the Gun
night in south London, she said, “It was so wild — like nothing I had
ever seen before.” The audience stamped their feet and shook shakers.
“It felt transformative. I thought, ‘I’ve got to have more of
this,’” Dickins said. Becoming a performance poet has given her a
place on a stage of her own making.
All her life she has written is mostly without being seen or heard. Her
mother died when she was nine, and, after she went into a care home at
13, Dickins’ writing stayed in notebooks. Really, she says, a lot of
her adult life has been about getting over childhood shyness. At
university — she studied education — she met her husband of 40 years,
but in three years of seminars she did not say a word. Some of these
results come from her years at the children’s home. She says, “It gave
me a sense of what it’s like to be excluded. I never fitted in anywhere.”
After she graduated, she discovered that she loved working with
people with learning disabilities. She became an expert in inclusive
education. “That was my niche (称心的职业),” she says. She
published books and returned to the University of North London as a senior
lecturer in early childhood studies.
Dickins now sees that in adulthood she has been giving herself
permission to be silly. “The sillier I allow myself to be, the better the
writing is,” she says. Her observations are humorous.
“Putting things into words and giving shape to your emotions is an
important part of coming to terms with the things that happen in life,”
she says.
Does she still feel like an outsider?
“I think I’ve made it into a virtue. I celebrate the fact that I don’t
fit into a box. Finally! You have to wait till you’re 62 to feel
confident!” she says. “But I have a sense of who I am and I’m proud
of it. I wouldn’t be anyone else now — and it took me a long time to say
that.”
