Guanqian Street is one of the most famous shopping areas in Suzhou. Lying in the center of Suzhou’s old town, the street is a place where history and modern life dance together.
In the Song Dynasty (960—1279), the street was called “Tianqingguan Street” because of the temple’s (庙) old name. Later, during the Yuan Dynasty (1271—1368), people started calling it “Guanqian Street”. In the 1930s, the street became wider. After 1949, it was rebuilt with asphalt (柏油). In 1982, it became one of China’s earliest walking streets.
The biggest changes happened between 1999 and 2003. New shopping malls were built, but the street still kept its historical style. For example, buildings were low and painted in black, white, and grey to match Suzhou’s ancient buildings. Now Guanqian Street has six parts, such as modern shopping areas and traditional snack areas.
Today, Guanqian Street never sleeps! You can taste delicious spring rolls, try on traditional silk clothes, or watch artists paint fans. During festivals, the street shines with lanterns and lively music. At night, colourful lights make the street even more beautiful. Now, the street has also become a popular place for visitors with new things like 3D screens and themed (主题) cafes.

I’ve lived in a lorry (卡车) with my younger sister Sinita and my parents for over 200 days now! We’re travelling around Africa. The lorry is a bit like a house on wheels (轮子), but it has less space. However, we have everything we need for our journey. It’s not fast. That is OK - we’re not in a hurry.
Our schoolbooks are the same as the ones back home. My mum gives us lessons and then sends our work to teachers on the Internet. But my favourite way of learning is by going on special trips that my parents plan. We’ve seen so many wonderful places, people and animals during the trip.
In September, we went camping in the Kalahari Desert (卡拉哈里沙漠). We learnt a lot about the night sky. The Kalahari is not like other deserts because it gets such a lot of rain that some parts of it look really green. We had a guide, and he told us about all the lovely animals that lived there.
In November, we went on a whale-watching tour in South Africa and saw six whales. We said hello to them. One even swam under our boat. That was really thrilling. I knew whales were big, but I couldn’t believe they were so large.
In December, we drove to Boulders Beach in South Africa. There are thousands of African penguins on the beach. These cute black and white birds can swim, but cannot fly. Many of the visitors who went to the beach enjoyed seeing their funny walk, but I was really interested in how clever they were at keeping their babies safe.

“Hometown” is a word full of warmth and beauty. How would you show your love for your hometown? At the final of a national English-speaking competition, contestants from all, over China shared their own stories.
Wang Siqi from Nanjing International School, Jiangsu, talked about her hometown Nanjing. “I used to live in the US, and my parents kept telling me everything about Nanjing. When I came back at age 9, I felt even closer to this city. Tasting its foods and hanging around in its universities, I was like a child who had missed her mom for too long, ” said Wang. “The competition gave me a great chance to show my love for Nanjing. ”

I want to show others a different side of Shanghai, so I told stories of how people helped each other during Shanghai’s lockdown, ” said Lan. “I believe this is the power of public speaking,” Lan added. “By using logic and emotion, you can better share your opinions, promoting (增进) understanding and removing prejudice (消除偏见).”
Yang Zihan, 14, born in Hong Kong, she mainly lives in Shenzhen. “Unlike other people who are so familiar with their hometown, my hometown is a ‘stranger’ to me. Shanxi is in North China. It’s full of wonderful places. So, are you ready to take an exciting trip to Shanxi with me?
The Yellow River rushes all the way from the far west. With great force, it cuts through the cliffs (峭壁) and comes into Shanxi at Laoniu Bend (老牛湾). Look! Here, the Great Wall stands firmly, like a brave soldier (士兵) keeping watch over this amazing scenery (风景). As it continues its journey, the river winds (蜿蜒) south, clearly marking the border between Shanxi and Shaanxi. Then, it takes a sharp turn east, separating Shanxi from Henan. At Jixian county, the Hukou Waterfall makes a loud noise, with the sound echoing (回响) far and wide. In winter, long, shiny icicles (冰柱) hang from the cliffs like crystal swords. On sunny days, a bright rainbow stretches across the waterfall, connecting Shanxi and Shaanxi.
The Taihang Mountains (太行山) run hundreds of kilometers from north to south, covering Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi, and Henan. These mountains are home to many precious (珍贵的) animals. Look carefully for the hard-to-find North China leopard, the colorful brown-eared pheasant (棕耳雉), and the forest musk deer (林麝). Some cliff faces are like giant, strong rock walls. To get around, people carve (开凿) tunnel-like roads on these cliffs. When you drive on these roads, it feels like an adventure movie! You can even see small mountain streams flowing along the way.
Shanxi lies on the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau (黄土高原). Rolling loess terraces (黄土梯田) seem to go on forever. On the hillsides (山坡), local people dug cave dwellings (窑洞) into the mountains. These caves are like natural shelters. In the winter, they stay very warm. In the summer, they are very cool. People living in these caves lead simple, happy lives, sharing stories and traditions passed down through generations. On festival days, the caves are decorated with red lanterns, filling the air with happiness.
