Section Ⅲ Integrated skills

“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!” “No,” said Dad.“It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”...“We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!”
结果:Mary and her family will stay at home waiting for rescue.
What safety tips can be used to protect themselves? Will there be any emotional changes?

Dad was listening to a weather report ① on the radio ; The radio says the city has already been flooded; “Mary, don’t worry.Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to ② comfort Mary; Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and ③ hugged his wife and daughter.
After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground.
“Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum.
“OK, Mum.If that’s what you think is best,” Mary replied uncertainly.
So they went upstairs and waited.Downstairs, water started flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had enough supplies, including food and drinking water.
Finally, the rain stopped, but Mary and her family could not leave while the house was still flooded. They listened to the radio and learnt that rescue workers in boats were coming to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. They waited for a boat to arrive at their house.Their home had been badly damaged, but they were all happy to be alive.
I’ve always known that I’m very quick with my hands. If someone throws something, I catch it almost before I’m aware it has been thrown. When I was young, I had no idea how useful this skill would become.
Last week, I was going to visit a friend with her newborn and was on my way to a toy store to buy a gift.I’d once lived in the neighbourhood and I decided to head back to my old cupcake shop for a coffee.Sitting alone at a table outside with my drink, I was approached by an older man, who in a calm and very matter-of-fact way told me to call 911, because there was a baby on a fire escape.
I jumped up to see where the baby was.I was so surprised to see him, wearing a little onesie (连体衣) and lying on the fire escape railings (栏杆) between the second and third storeys.I was nervous, so the baby boy became my only priority.
As I was on the phone to the emergency services, I made eye contact with the bady, keeping him calm, telling him to stay there. Some people were going up the stairs to find the parents, who were apparently sleeping through the whole drama.
I just wanted the bady to feel safe.I hoped he’d stay there until somebody could rescue him.Apparently he had slipped through pieces of cardboard placed next to an air-conditioning unit in the window, and without bars to protect him he’d crawled (爬) out and up the fire escape towards the next storey. He was only 16 months old.Even for him to climb up and balance in that position was incredible.
Then he slipped.Instinctively (本能), he grabbed on the railing as he fell, hanging by his arms.I knew he couldn’t hold on, 25 feet above the street, for long.I sensed people had gathered behind, but my attention was purely focused on my intention to catch the baby.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I made sure I was positioned to catch him.
The moments after he was saved were exciting.
I made sure I was positioned to catch him.The firemen had not yet arrived, but the baby seemed unable to hold on.There was a lot of people around, but no one had a good idea to save him.The baby’s parents still did not appear.I tried to open my eyes against the glare of the sun to locate the baby.Suddenly the baby let go of the railing and dropped rapidly.I caught him as quickly as I could. At that moment my hanging heart finally fell down.
The moments after he was saved were exciting. The crowd moved out of the way and the firemen arrived.Everyone felt nervous when the doctor examined the baby.A lot of people also expressed their admiration and respect for me.A woman took the baby out of my hands and explained to me that she was the mother. And then she sincerely thanked me.While everyone was circling around the baby, I left silently and walked to my friend’s house.

A
Can you survive an unannounced storm? Although there is expert broadcasting and we are equipped with cellphones, there are still some examples when the violent weather takes us by surprise.
While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warnings, sudden Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day’s time, endangering everyone and everything in their paths.
There have been oil workers trapped off the coast when sudden storms appeared.Field archaeologists have been stuck in seaside areas without storm warnings.A few decades ago, a Texas National Guard group was trapped on the beach by rain-forced flooding and had to ride out a major hurricane during a training exercise. There’ve been a few cases where travelers were trapped on an island or in a seaside area and unable to escape in time.
Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is generally a choice for most of us — but not for all. Each year thousands of islanders across the Caribbean face the danger of hurricanes without a public shelter to hide in.Most ride out the storm in their homes.
But there’re a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies.Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. If you’re headed outdoors for a few days or weeks, you should always carry a flashlight (手电筒) with extra batteries, a GPS device (装置), and a basic medical box.If you’re traveling in your car, remember you may suffer from high winds. You’d better not stay inside to avoid being blown away along with your car.Keeping your head and your courage up is crucial to survival in any type of danger.Let common sense guide you and always be prepared for the worst.

Over the last two days in December last year, nearly 30 tornadoes caused great damage across six states — from Arkansas in the south to Illinois in the midwest.More than 100 tornado warnings were issued — the most ever for a day.The tornado in Kentucky caused at least 50 people’s deaths, which was described as the worst in this state’s history.
As one of the largest countries in the world, the United States is also one of the most geographically various countries — from deserts to forests to miles of coastline. While this comes with many advantages, it unfortunately leaves the country easily damaged by all kinds of natural disasters.
Different parts of the United States face different types of natural disasters. The west coast is at risk of wildfires, earthquakes, and even volcanic eruptions. The southern part of the country is frequently hit by tornadoes, and the east coast faces the threat of serious hurricanes every year.Midwestern areas near rivers are often flooded by huge floods, and these are the worst floods in American history.
The governments reviewed the weather event in each state’s history that caused the highest number of deaths to determine the worst natural disaster in every state. Thanks to their location and geographic research, some states made preparations ahead of time to avoid mass-casualty (重大伤亡的) weather events.
However, many other parts of the country have been less fortunate, experiencing massive storms and floods. Many such events, like the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston of Texas, killed so many people that it was impossible to get an exact number of final deaths, especially during that time.
American weather continues to become more changeable. In 2018, there were 14 weather events that caused over $1 billion in damage. And in many parts of the country, these weather events could become even more destructive (毁灭性的) because of global warming.

Lightning (闪电) strikes more than eight million times a day worldwide. That’s about 93 times per second. What a phenomenon!
How hot is a lightning bolt? About 50,000 °F — five times hotter than the surface of the sun.Yes,it really can rain frogs, fish, and other decidedly odd things. It’s a rare meteorological (气象学的) event, but scientists say strong winds from a tornado or from a storm can be powerful enough to drive animals and objects high into the air, and they have to come down eventually.
It is a bad idea to take a shower during a thunderstorm. If lightning hits your house,it can travel through your plumbing (管道设备) and shock anyone who comes into contact with water flowing through it.People have been shocked or killed while bathing, washing dishes and clothes. This is also why indoor pools often close during storms.Rubber tires are not what protect you from lightning when you’re in your car. You’re protected because when lightning hits a car,it travels around the outside of the metal structure to get to the ground.Just be careful not to touch any metal areas inside.
Lightning can strike the same place twice — and it often does, especially objects that are tall, pointy, and separated. The Empire State Building, for example, is hit almost 100 times a year, according to the CDC.
You can be struck by lightning even when it’s not raining.About 10 per cent of lightning strikes take place when there’s no rainfall. In the 1980s,NASA flew one airplane through 1,496 thunderstorms. It was struck by lightning more than 700 times.Today, a commercial airplane will be hit by lightning about once a year on average, typically with no ill effects. It has been decades since a US airliner crashed as a result of a lightning strike.
To deal with such a frequent phenomenon, every day, twice a day, weather trackers,at the same time, launch giant balloons from almost 900 locations worldwide. The balloons measure above ground weather data such as temperature, humidity (湿度),and wind speed, and they provide vital information that meteorologists use to make forecasts and predict lightning.

B.Swim in a pool.
C.Avoid metal things.
D.Stand under a tall tree.
11.What can be inferred from the text?( )
A.No sign of rainfall means no lightning.
B.Efforts have been made to keep aircraft safe.
C.Commercial planes can escape lightning hits.
D.The Empire State Building faces most lightning strikes.
In the 1980s, NASA flew one airplane ... as a result of a lightning strike.
12.What reduces the damage of a lightning strike?( )
A.Lightning location.
B.Measurement balloons.
C.Changing wind direction.
D.Weather forecast and prediction.

How to Survive in an Earthquake
Earthquakes have happened in many places recently, causing significant damage. So how to keep safe during an earthquake has become an important issue. Here are some guidelines.
Above all, don’t be nervous and try to keep calm.If you are outdoors, it’s necessary to get into an open area away from trees, buildings, walls, power lines and anything else that might fall on you.If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place such as under a strong desk.Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect yourself from falling objects. Finally, never use the lift.
Actually we can reduce the damage that earthquakes bring us if we take right measures.
