Ban Chao: The Scholar Who Became a Conqueror of the West
Ban Chao was born into a well-educated family in China during the Eastern Han Dynasty. As a young man, he worked as a clerk, copying papers every day. Tired of his boring job, he said, “A real man should do great things in war, not spend his life writing!”
Soon after, he joined the army and was sent to the Western Regions (now Xinjiang and Central Asia). At that time, these lands were ruled by unfriendly tribes who caused trouble for Han Dynasty traders. Ban Chao led a small group of soldiers on brave trips, using both talking and fighting to make local kingdoms friends with China.
His most well-known success happened in the kingdom of Shanshan. When the Xiongnu (strong nomad enemies) sent messengers to make Shanshan fight against the Han, Ban Chao told his men, “We must attack first, or we will be killed here.” That night, they secretly attacked the Xiongnu messengers and burned their tents. The surprised king of Shanshan then promised to be loyal to China.
For more than 30 years, Ban Chao worked as the leader of the Western Regions, keeping the Silk Road safe and making Han power reach farther than before. Though he missed his home, he wouldn’t leave until his work was done. Finally, at age 70, old Ban Chao went back to the capital, where the emperor called him “the man who controlled the West with only 36 men”.
Ban Chao showed that bravery and strong will can change a person’s life — and even a whole country’s future.
