Dr.Cindy Lee Van Dover is an outstanding leader for women in marine biology, specifically in deep-sea biology and exploration. In 1982, she dove for the first time in the human-occupied vehicle Alvin during a biological research expedition to hydrothermal vents (热液喷口) on the East Pacific Rise.Van Dover became an Alvin pilot in 1990, eventually making 48 dives as pilot-in-command of Alvin and participating in over 100 such dives in total.
During these expeditions that have taken her to many of the known vent fields in the Atlantic and Pacific, as well as to deep-water seamounts and other significant seafloor features, Van Dover discovered many new species of marine life, including some unique organisms (有机体).
When asked about her advice for young women interested in a career in science, Van Dover emphasises that she makes no distinction between making a discovery as a scientist and as a woman scientist. She advises aspiring (有抱负的) scientists to seek opportunity, do their homework, know something about what they want to do, find out who does it well, and seek advice. Her journey involved some rejections, but she persevered to achieve her goals.
Van Dover’s primary area of research is oceanography (海洋学), but she also studies biodiversity, biogeochemistry, conservation biology, ecology, and marine science. In addition to research and policy development, Van Dover authored a popular book for the lay audience about the deep sea and her experiences as an Alvin pilot (Deep-Ocean Journeys: Discovering New Life At The Bottom Of The Sea). She is also the author of the first textbook on hydrothermal vents (The Ecology of Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents).
Van Dover’s devotion to deep-sea biology has earned her several awards and financial support. She credits her work habits to her parents, and her love for nature and technology to her mom and dad, respectively. She also credits her professors in college and graduate school for having a great influence on her as an individual and a scientist.
1.What impact did Van Dover’s work with Alvin have?( )
A.It helped develop methods of deep-sea mining. B.It renewed public interest in oceanography.
C.It found previously unknown marine life. D.It helped improve submarine technology.
2.What qualities might Van Dover value most in a scientist?( )
A.Creativity and great ambition. B.Open-mindedness and curiosity.
C.Adaptability and critical thinking. D.Warm-heartedness and generosity.
3.In what way does Van Dover extend her influence to the general public?( )
A.By writing books. B.By leading public campaigns.
C.By teaching underwater photography. D.By managing ocean conservation projects.
4.Who inspired Van Dover’s passion for nature?( )
A.Her father. B.Her mother.
C.Her college professor. D.Her high school teacher.

National Geographic Pristine Seas, in partnership with the Governments of Niue and a local nonprofit organisation Tofia Niue, conducted a scientific survey to document marine biodiversity in the small island nation known for its pure clear waters alive with sea life.Pristine Seas researchers and filmmakers and regional experts aimed to survey the fully protected, 127,000-square-kilometer Niue Moana Mahu Marine Protected Area (MPA), established in 2020 by the Niue government.
Located in the South Pacific, about 1,500 miles northeast of New Zealand between Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, Niue is one of the largest elevated coral atolls (环礁) in the world. The small island nation has made recent moves to gain recognition as a unique cultural and ecotourism destination with draws like respectful interactions with nursing humpback whales and spectacular star watching in the world’s first Dark Sky Nation, serving as a role model for global marine conservation.
Pristine Seas played a critical role in supporting the establishment of the Niue Moana Mahu MPA.In 2016, the Government of Niue and Tofia Niue invited the team of scientists and filmmakers to help the island community survey and document its unique underwater environment in an effort to ensure the long-term sustainable use of its resources. When they arrived, Beveridge Reef (贝弗里奇礁) was largely unexplored and many Niuean residents had never seen the images of the reef and its rich underwater biodiversity and breathtaking beauty. This was a critical factor in gaining the full support of the entire nation to protect these important natural treasures.
The Pristine Seas Niue expedition is the third stop on The Global Expedition, an ambitious five-year cooperation with central and western Pacific Island nations. The Pristine Seas team is working alongside island communities, Indigenous (土著的) People, government officials and local marine scientists to assess the potential benefits of expanding protection in waters that are critical to the survival of what these countries call the Blue Pacific Continent.
5.What is the main goal of the Pristine Seas expedition?( )
A.To promote local tourism. B.To explore new shipping routes.
C.To record the variety of sea life. D.To establish a new research center.
6.What does paragraph 2 mainly suggest about Niue?( )
A.Its location. B.Its ancient history.
C.Its cultural reputation. D.Its ocean protection success.
7.Why was the Beveridge Reef exploration important for Niuean residents?( )
A.It brought immediate economic benefits.
B.It offered them new tourist destinations.
C.It highlighted the need for scientific education.
D.It introduced them to the reef’s ecological value.
8.What can be inferred about The Global Expedition?( )
A.It focuses on promoting indigenous cultures.
B.It seeks to strengthen local fishing industries.
C.It works to expand marine conservation efforts.
D.It aims to plan new tourism strategies for island nations.
