In Japan, new laws have been introduced to improve cycling safety, especially regarding mobile phone use. Starting Friday, cyclists caught using their phones while riding could face up to six months in prison or a fine of 100,000 yen. This change comes as the number of cycling accidents has increased since 2021 when more people began cycling instead of using public transport.
The new regulations also address cyclists riding under the influence of alcohol. Those caught can receive a penalty (处罚) of up to three years in prison or a fine of 500,000 yen. Just hours after the laws took effect, authorities in Osaka reported five violations (违规), including two cyclists who were caught riding while drunk. One of them collided with(与……碰撞) another cyclist, but luckily, there were no injuries.
Under these new rules, cyclists who cause accidents can be fined up to 300,000 yen or face up to a year in jail. Although the overall number of traffic accidents in Japan is decreasing, bicycle accidents are increasing. In 2023, more than 72,000 bicycle accidents were recorded, making up over 20% of all traffic accidents in the country.
In 2024, there were two deaths and 34 serious injuries from accidents involving cyclists using their phones, the highest number since 2007. Between 2018 and 2022, there were 454 accidents caused by cyclists using phones, a 50% increase compared to the previous five years.
These new laws are part of a broader effort to enhance safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.Last year, it became mandatory (强制的) for cyclists to wear helmets, and in May, Japan's parliament passed a bill allowing police to fine cyclists for traffic violations. How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA,carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people. This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems.
But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who have high scores as well, displayed just average collaborative(合作的) skills. “One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they see schools as places for competition.”“However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today's society.” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls can be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes towards relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to other's opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment can influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication such as class debates, students might have better attitudes towards collaborating.

A. work with other people B. get high scores on tests

( )22. What do Chinese teachers and parents think of working together now?
A. They like it a lot. B. They can't stand it.
C. They think it's important. D. They think it's unnecessary.
( )23. What can we know from the findings of the survey?
A. Boys are better at working with others than girls.
B. Students who do well on tests are worse at working with others.
C. Collaborative skills are less important than scores for students' futures.
D. The classroom environment can influence students' ability to work together.
( )24. What can be done to improve students’ ability to work together according to the passage?
A.Giving students high scores on every test.
B. Helping students to get used to exam pressure.
C. Making girls work with girls rather than boys.
D. Arranging more communicative activities in class.
( )25. What's the passage mainly about?

E. Bluebirds usually live in dead or nearly-dead trees.
F. Larson saw a bluebird going in and out of a dead tree around his house.
Al Larson is also known as the“Bluebird Man”. He first began his work of love after he read a passage in National Geographic. 26 Then he started to fix up little boxes that could serve as homes for bluebirds. His work is helpful. It shows building birdhouses can help to control their falling populations.
At first, he started the work as a hobby to spend time in his retirement. 27 After almost forty years of experience, he has recorded over 30,000 bluebirds, thanks to the 350 birdhouses that he has built across southwest Idaho. He often travels over 5,000 miles to check on all of his boxes during the summer nesting season.
28 Their population began to drop after the invention of the electric chainsaw(链锯) in the 1920s. It made it easier for people to cut down dead trees. Cutting down dead trees broke bluebirds’homes. The use of pesticides(农药) caused an uncertain future for the bluebirds in Idaho.
29 It has shown us that if we take a moment to understand the needs of a kind of animal, we’ ll find a way to deal with the problem.
Now that he is about 100 years old, Larson shows no signs of slowing down, what's more, his encouraging story has been turned into the Emmy award-nominated movie(艾美奖提名电影) Bluebird Man.
“Larson is a living example of how much one person can achieve when he sets his mind on a task. But he's also an example of the advantages(有利条件) that a project like this can have for people,”filmmaker Matthew Podolsky said,“ 30 ”
And they are truly the secret to his long.
