Also known as the Big Apple, New York City was a foreign place that I had never visited before. From movies and media, I conceived (构想) the idea that the city would be busy and run-down and that the people would be rude and loud. That all changed, however, when my family and I went on a road trip there in July of 2016.When we reached New York, we walked around the city, looking at the amazing buildings, the wonderful museums, and the restaurants lining the streets.
Later that day, we decided to join in a tour of the Empire State Building.Standing just outside, I felt like a little ant looking up at the 1,250-1,454-foot building. We went to the top and though I had a preconceived idea that the city was crowded, dark, and dirty, the view from above all the buildings was breathtaking and made me realise I was wrong for the first time.
Afterward, we visited Grand Central Terminal and I was able to see people run around and go about their day, which proved one of my beliefs that New Yorkers are always busy. However, this was soon invalidated (证明……错误) when we passed Bryant Park and I saw so many people reading, having picnics, and simply enjoying their day.
The following day, we traveled to Times Square. To my surprise, most of the people there seemed to be locals selling photos with childhood cartoons and characters from different movies and television shows, which I had never seen before and thought was somewhat strange.
After three days, our trip sadly came to an end.Despite being on opposite ends of the East Coast, I noticed that Marietta and New York City had many similarities within their communities. What I knew about New York City was based on stereotypes (刻板印象) and the opinions of others; I now know I should make my judgments (判断) with my personal experiences instead of making assumptions.

Tracey Lawko is a textile (纺织品) artist and the mind behind a Canada-wide art project called the Maple Leaf Project.
Lawko found herself interested in the “history of Canada”.“Wouldn’t it be nice to do something that shows the diversity in our country?” The project is a response to the question she asked herself.
The completed artwork will feature an eight-foot textile tree with branches decorated by 180 unique, textile maple leaves designed by indigenous peoples and immigrants in Canada.“I see the differences between our cultures as being like the differences between individual leaves,” said Lawko.“Yes, we’re different. But fundamentally, there are a lot of things that are the same.”
While each textile leaf will begin with the same model for consistent (一致的) sizing, the rest of the design and creative process is completely up to each participant (参与者).“I want the leaf to be a total expression of the participant and of their cultural heritage,” explained Lawko.“So the design on the leaf, the materials they choose, the technique that they use, those are all the choice of individuals.”
Kleo Skavinski, who is Dene from Wrigley, is the project’s indigenous advisor.“I like the idea that we have a representation of this land and of the people in the community here ...without the thought of Canada itself,” said Skavinski.“It’s about place and it’s about home. And I think that’s pretty magical.”
The 180 groups will include 120 immigrant groups and 60 indigenous groups.“My expectation is that the tree will continue to grow over time,” Lawko said.“People will say, ‘Well, you haven’t got my culture.’So I’m hoping that ...we really will have many more leaves over time.”
5.Why did Lawko start her art project?( )

6.How does Lawko look at cultures?( )
A.They set immigrants apart from indigenous peoples.
