They talk about the straw that broke the camel's back, but really it should be the password that wiped out my memory bank.
I was going along the -with instant recall of my bank PIN(密码), my mobile phone number and the date of my cousin's birthday before I downloaded a gas station payment app for its new customer discount. It asked me to create a password. When I typed in “gas 1”, it was rejected for not being complex enough. I tried again: “I Hate Hearless Oil Companies@”. But that was too long and didn’t include “at least one number”. But here is the thing: as soon as 1 added the fresh password into my memory, I instantly forgot all the others. My brain had hit its limit for passwords. I now know nothing.
I had entered some passwords in a notebook. Of course, I didn't write down the actual passwords, in case it fell into the wrong hands. Instead, I masked them in a way that only a family member could figure them out. For example, I combined my bank PIN with our postal code, then added it to a list of phone numbers. It would fool even Albert Einstein.
Maybe we need a system like the one we use to remember people's names. You know, you form an association between a person's characteristics and their name by whispering “Skinny George, Skinny George”in heart after meeting them. The risk is that, upon seeing him, you’ll burst out the phrase. “Skinny George” might not mind, but it’s possible “Boring Betty” will. As for remembering passwords as you change them, you could simply use the first and last letters of your favorite singer's greatest hits, together with the year of their release.
Maybe I’ll try that one out—but only after describing the system in the notebook. Then I'll hide it in a place so secret that I'll never remember where it is.
4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. He fell for a marketing trick. B. He was driven mad by passwords.
C. He had a serious memory disorder. D. He was rejected by the gas station.
5. By mentioning Albert Einstein in paragraph 3, the author intends to ______ .
A. show how secure his passwords were
B. challenge the intelligence of scientists
C. prove the uselessness of his passwords
D. promote a more scientific password system
6. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To encourage readers to use password notebooks.
B. To recommend a password-remembering method.
C. To complain about the trouble caused by passwords.
D. To point out the importance of using complex passwords.
7. What is the tone of the text?
A. Inspiring. B. Indifferent. C. Humorous. D. Serious.
B 5. A 6. C 7. C

Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
8. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2?
A. Your weight changes little during a day.
B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
9. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months?
A. You will weigh more.
B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body fat will increase.
D. Your body composition will change.
10. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body?
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds.
C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Why Do We Gain Weight?
B. How to Work Out Effectively?
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body?
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?
B 9. D 10. C 11. D
根据第二段第一句““A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says.(他说:“一个人的体表质量是肌肉、脂肪、骨头、血液,甚至是我们肺中携带的空气的组合。”)”
根据第三段的“When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease.(当你开始通过锻炼来改变你的身体组成——通过增加更多的肌肉量和减少体脂——你的体重可能会增加,而体脂率可能会降低。)”
根据倒数第二段“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight(水大约占一个人体重的65%到90%)”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.(你是否一直在锻炼,饮食也很健康,但当你站在秤上时,秤上显示你胖了几磅?“这很正常,这并不意味着你的锻炼没有效果,”佛罗里达州迈阿密海滩的运动生理学家Jeffrey A. Dolgan说。)”和第二段的“Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.(在例行锻炼后,身体各个部位的质量百分比会立即发生15%的变化。所以,如果你在锻炼和健康饮食的同时体重增加,这可能不是你想的那种类型的体重增加。)”可知,文章主要分析了坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后体重不降反增的原因。D项“Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?(为什么我锻炼后体重反而增加了?)”

In the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, millions of monarch butterflies find shelter in the oyamel fir forests after a tough migration from Canada and the United States down to Mexico for the winter. Now, as rising temperatures, droughts, and disease threaten the forests of the monarch reserve, scientists are hoping to help these trees migrate.
“We’re doing something different,” says Sáenz-Romero, a researcher of the reserve. “If we don’t do this, the trees in the monarch reserve are going to die.” By 2090, the reserve’s forest habitats are expected to deteriorate, as temperatures warm. Using a technique called assisted migration, researchers might be able to move these trees to the nearby volcano.
Forests move naturally; they shift in many directions and elevations as climate changes. Assisted migration helps the forest move more quickly than it would do so naturally. You collect seeds from a place with a specific climate, like the monarch reserve, and move them to an area that will have a similar climate in the future, explains Sáenz-Romero.
The experiment began in 2017, when Sáenz-Romero and his team gathered seeds from oyamel fir trees in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve at various altitudes. For two years, the plants grew in a shade house and then for another year in a nursery at around 9,800 feet to help them adjust to the altitude. Then, in 2021, they worked with the local community to plant the seedlings under “nurse plants”, which protected them from difficult conditions. In 2023, six years after planting the seeds, they found that at two of those heights, 11,800 and 12,400 feet, nearly 70 percent of the seedlings had survived even at the higher elevation.
“These types of experiments are tremendously important,” says Sally Aitken, who wasn’t involved in the study. However, assisted migration outside of a tree’s normal range comes with concerns, Aitken says. Oyamel firs don’t normally grow at this height on Nevado de Toluca’s slopes. Moving a species could have unintended ecological fallout for other species present in that ecosystem.
For now, in Mexico, Sáenz-Romero hopes this new study convinces conservationists and government officials that assisted migration can establish new potential wintering sites for the monarch butterflies.
12. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Form. B. Expand. C. Worsen. D. Melt.
13. What can we learn about assisted migration from the experiment?
A. It has achieved some intended targets. B. It expands the species of nurse plants.
C. It takes way too much time and effort. D. It saved monarch butterflies worldwide.
14. What might assisted migration lead to according to Aitken?
A. Presence of new species. B. Change of the local weather.
C. Reduction of Oyamel firs. D. Disturbance of the ecosystem.
15. What does Sáenz-Romero suggest Mexican officials do?
A. Build more natural reserves for the monarch butterflies.
B. Support assisted migration to protect monarch butterflies.
C. Learn more relevant knowledge about insect conservation.
D. Convince conservationists to establish observational centers.
C 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第二段“If we don’t do this, the trees in the monarch reserve are going to die. (如果我们不这样做,黑脉金斑蝶保护区树木就会死亡。)”以及后文“as temperatures warm (随着气温变暖)”可知,如果不采取行动,森林里的树木会死亡,所以当气候继续变暖,黑脉金斑蝶的栖息地会不断恶化。故划线词意思是“恶化”。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In 2023, six years after planting the seeds, they found that at two of those heights, 11,800 and 12,400 feet, nearly 70 percent of the seedlings had survived even at the higher elevation. (在2023年,也就是播种六年后,他们发现,在11800英尺和12400英尺的高度,近70%的幼苗即使在更高的海拔上也能存活下来。)”可知,辅助迁移已经实现了一些预期目标。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Moving a species could have unintended ecological fallout for other species present in that ecosystem. (一个物种的迁移可能会对该生态系统中的其他物种产生意想不到的生态影响。)”可知,根据艾特肯的说法,辅助迁移可能会导致生态系统的干扰。故选D。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“For now, in Mexico, Sáenz-Romero hopes this new study convinces conservationists and government officials that assisted migration can establish new potential wintering sites for the monarch butterflies. (目前,在墨西哥,Sáenz-Romero希望这项新研究能说服环保人士和政府官员,帮助迁徙可以为帝王蝶建立新的潜在越冬地点。)”可知,Sáenz-Romero建议墨西哥官员支持辅助迁徙,保护黑脉金斑蝶。故选B。

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Are you able to cook a healthy meal? Are you able to manage your money well? Are you able to sew on a button? ___16___ This highlights a significant gap in modern education, which heavily prioritizes academic achievement and strict testing, often at the expense of practical life skills.
Schools have done well in preparing us to be academic achievers in school, but may not have prepared us well enough in developing life skills. ___17___ For those without these basic skills, the pandemic lockdown was a rude shock. With restaurants closed and home services stopped, it would have been satisfying to cook a meal or fix a light bulb. It’s a shame that schools produce scholarly individuals who are unprepared for simple home tasks.
___18___ For example, financial management fosters responsibility and caution, while lessons on investment teach wealth growth. Equipped with this literacy, students can better discuss financial goals with parents, and budgeting knowledge can steer them away from overspending. Thus, in our complex world, schools must teach beyond academic subjects.
After all, all the responsibility cannot be transferred to the home. The argument for parents teaching practical life skills overlooks modern realities. Many working parents lack the time, and some may not possess the proficiency themselves. ___19___.
Sandra Carey, a writer, puts it appropriately: “Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life.” School is not simply a place to pass knowledge and prepare us for a career. ___20___
A. Thus, a balanced approach is needed early on.
B. For instance, many communities offer evening classes for adults.
C. Instead, it equips us with the wisdom to construct a fulfilling life.
D. Not many of us can confidently nod our heads to these questions.
E. Consequently, the central role in bridging this gap must fall to our schools.
F. By integrating practical skills, schools can teach a more complete set of life values.
G. Yet practical skills such as cooking and housekeeping are essential in the real world.
D 17. G 18. F 19. E 20. C

C To complain about the trouble caused by passwords.
D. To point out the importance of using complex passwords.
7. What is the tone of the text?
A. Inspiring. B. Indifferent. C. Humorous. D. Serious.

A. Thus a balanced approach is needed early on.
