情境导语:The “Nan Rendong” Star.
文体:说明文 难度:★★★☆☆
词数:约280词 建议用时:7分钟
15
In the autumn of 2025,when the new term began, a text
was added to the Chinese textbook—There Is a “Nan Rendong
Star” in the Sky. It tells the story of Nan Rendong. Born in
1945, he got the top scores in science of the College Entrance
Exam in his hometown Jilin Province when entering Tsinghua
University in 1963.
In the early 1990s, Nan wanted to build a radio telescope
500 metres across. At that time, the biggest one in China was
less than 30 metres across. To realise his dream, Nan led the
FAST project in 1994.
The first challenge Nan and his team faced was finding a
suitable location—a problem that took the scientist 12 years to
solve. Finally, Nan discovered a large crater(洼坑) hidden in
Guizhou Province.
The cable-net construction(索网结构建设) of the
telescope was another challenge. During the process of solving
the problem, Nan and his team had nothing to refer to. “During
every failure, Nan was there, trying to find out a solution,” said
Jiang Peng, Nan’s helper. “Most of the scientists working on the
FAST project have their own fields, but Nan knew everything.”
After more than twenty years of development, the project
was successfully completed when FAST, the largest and most
sensitive(灵敏的) radio telescope in the world, opened in
2016.
FAST is able to receive signals from 10 billion light years
away, and Nan hoped that FAST can collect information for us
to explore the origins(起源) of the universe and life. “The
reason humans evolved(进化) from lower forms of life to
what we are now is because we’ve always kept the spirit of
exploring the unknown,” Nan said. Sadly, FAST, also known as
China’s Sky Eye, had just started to “watch” the universe, while
the founding father of the project closed his eyes forever.#1.1.8
