Many English learners like to write long sentences in their compositions (作文).
They want to impress others with their vocabulary and mastery of grammar. But remember, “wordy” sentences, or sentences that are unnecessarily long, can prevent us from communicating clearly. In a good sentence, every word should serve a purpose and appear in the right place.
Let’s look at an example of a wordy sentence: “There is currently a lively, ongoing debate (辩论) among many university teachers and other experts who study human nature, during which arguments are being presented about what it means that so many young people who live in our society today are so interested in stories about superheroes.” Can you easily understand this 46-word sentence? Well, you’re not alone if you can’t. In one interview, only 25 percent of people understood it.
Now, compare it to this simpler sentence: “University teachers are discussing why young people like superhero stories.” See? It’s much easier to understand and still shows the same meaning.
Here are some tips to help you avoid wordy sentences.
Tip 1: Use active verbs instead of passive ones. For example, say “The family bought a new car.” instead of “A new car was bought by the family.”
Tip 2: Avoid wordy phrases. Instead of “as a matter of fact”, just use “in fact”.
Tip 3: Put sentences together when possible. For example, instead of “Ann likes the book, and her best friend Margot likes it too,” say “Both Ann and her best friend Margot enjoy the book.”
By following these tips, you can make your writing clearer and more enjoyable for your readers.
21. Why do many English learners prefer to write long sentences in their compositions?
A. To increase the number of words in compositions.
B. To get higher scores in their writing.
C. To help their readers better understand.
D. To show their vocabulary and grammar skills.
22. What is the main problem with “wordy” sentences according to the passage?
A. They are very difficult to write. B. They are unclear in communication.
C. They are not creative at all. D. They are easy to make mistakes.
23. According to the passage, what percent of people couldn’t easily understand the 46-word sentence?
A. B. C. D.
24. Which of the following is an example of Tip 2?
A. Use “Jim read the book” instead of “The book was read by Jim.”
B. Use “have the ability to” instead of “can”.
C. Use “The book was read by Jim.” instead of “Jim read the book.”
D. Use “can” instead of “have the ability to”.
25. Who is the passage written for?
A. Parents. B. Teachers. C. Language learners. D. English experts.
【答案】21. D 22. B 23. A 24. D 25. C
【解析】

【23题详解】
第三段提到“In one interview, only 25 percent of people understood it”,这意味着有75%的人不能轻易理解这个46个单词的句子。
【24题详解】
第四段中关于Tip 2提到“Instead of ‘as a matter of fact’, just use ‘in fact’”,说明要避免冗长短语,用更简洁的表达,D选项“Use ‘can’ instead of ‘have the ability to’ ”符合用简洁表达替代冗长表达这一要点。
【25题详解】
文章开头提到“Many English learners like to write long sentences in their compositions”,且全文围绕英语学习者写作文时避免冗长句子展开,所以这篇文章是写给语言学习者的。

I’m Albert Bandura, but you can call me Bert. This is the space where I can help you with your daily life problems, one-on-one. Go ahead and ask away!
Dear Albert,
I think I am quite active and energetic. I’m always ready to take part in school activities. However, some of my classmates try to keep me out of these activities. They even laugh at me when they win prizes. This makes me feel upset. What should I do?
Tony
Hi, Tony,
I understand how you feel. It hurts when others don’t include you or laugh at you. But please remember, being active and willing to join school activities is a great thing! You should feel proud of yourself for trying your best and showing courage.
I once had a similar experience. When I was in my school’s track and field (田径) team, I sometimes felt out of place (不自在的) and was made fun of because of acting differently. Later, I joined the school quiz team instead. There, I met new friends who accepted me, and I finally felt like I belonged. It taught me that everyone has their own group out there where they fit in. Sometimes, people laugh because they don’t understand others or want to feel better about themselves.
Here are some of my suggestions. Try not to let their words stop you from doing what you enjoy. You can also make friends with classmates who share your interests. If the problem continues, try talking to a teacher. They can help you find a good solution and make sure everyone feels included.

阅读A、B两篇材料,并做每篇材料后的题目。从每小题所给的四个选项中,选出能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的最佳答案。
A
Many English learners like to write long sentences in their compositions (作文).
A Parents. B. Teachers. C. Language learners. D. English experts.

A. 回答问题
请阅读下面短文,根据所提供的信息,回答5个问题。要求所写答案语法正确、语义完整切题。
I’m Albert Bandura but you can call me Bert.
Bert
