You may have experienced the feeling. Your mouth feels like it is on fire. Your eyes start to water. You just ate one of nature’s hottest foods—the chili pepper (辣椒)!
Chili peppers, also called chilies, are found in dishes around the world. They are in dishes like Indian curries (咖喱), Thai tom yum soup (泰式冬阴功汤), and Mexican enchiladas (墨西哥玉米卷饼). Chilies come from the capsicum (辣椒) plant. They are “hot” because they have something called capsaicin.
Capsaicin is very good for your health. It helps you breathe better, and it may even help keep you fit. Capsaicin makes you feel less hungry. It also makes your body burn more calories (卡路里).
We can measure (测量) the heat (辣度) of chilies in units (单位) called Scoville heat units (SHU). The world’s hottest chili is the Carolina Reaper. It sometimes measures up to 2 million SHU!
Eating a hot chili can be uncomfortable, but some people love to eat them. Anandita Dutta Tamuly, a woman from Assam, India, became famous for eating chilies. She ate 51 hot peppers in just two minutes! The peppers were Naga Jolokia (“ghost peppers”). They grow in Assam and are the third-hottest chilies in the world.
“I found eating chilies was a great way to stay healthy,” says Tamuly. She began eating chilies when she was a child. She eats chilies when she doesn’t feel well, too. “Every time I have a cold or flu, I just eat some chilies and I feel better. To be honest, I hardly notice them now.”

C. I almost don’t feel the heat of the chilies. D. I want to eat the world’s hottest chili.
42. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to eat very hot chili peppers. B. Ideas for cooking using chili peppers.
C. The facts about hot chili peppers. D. Why people don’t like chili peppers.

In 2025, China’s love for football was woken up by the Jiangsu Football City League, called “Suchao”. This local league has done more to make football popular again than any other program in years. Here’s why it worked.
First, the government helped a lot. The Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau ran the league, and the provincial government gave strong support. This made sure the league had good policies to follow. Second, the 13 cities in Jiangsu have strong economies (经济) . They used this to build great stadiums, like Zhongnan Stadium in Nantong. These places made games fun for both players and fans.
But the best part was the idea of “universal participation+city honor”. Each city had a team with its own name. This made people feel proud of where they lived and excited to join in. The teams had different players—some were pros (职业选手),some were students, and some just played for fun. Their good games showed how much people love football in Jiangsu.
Social media also helped. Cool slogans and tags about the league went viral (爆红) online, so more people knew about it. And it wasn’t just about football. The league became a war for cities to share their culture and tourism. Cities showed off their looks, brought in tourists, and helped each other grow.
With ideas like teamwork, hometown love, and fun, Suchao has brought new life to football in Jiangsu. It shows that small, local efforts can make a big difference for a country’s sports culture.
43. How many teams are there in Suchao?
A. 11 B. 12 C. 13. D. 14.
44. Which of the following is NOT the reason for Suchao’s success?
A. Government help. B. Strong economies.
C. Social media. D. Professional (职业的) players.
45. Which of the following words has a similar meaning to “honor” in paragraph 3?
A. Excitement. B. Fun. C. Pride. D. Name.

(Father enters, seeing the letters on the bed. )
F: Oh, Chris... no, please...
C: The latest letter says she’s in London. It’s her handwriting in the letters-they’re real. Facts never lie. But you told me she died. You said it was a heart problem. She left us and you lied.
F: (Kneeling, tears in his eyes) I’m so sorry. Please don’t be angry with me.
C: But why did you do that?
F: I was deeply hurt about her leaving... and I was scared that if you knew the truth, you’d want to go to her. Then I would lose you, too.
C: You lied to me. For two years, one month, and four days. Everything you told me was a lie.
F: Can you…can you forgive (原谅) me?
C: No, never!

If you want to be a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading? Some people read very quickly, while others read very slowly. But which one is better? The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down to read instructions carefully. The slow reader may be a good reader. But he may spend too much time reading a story for fun. So the reader who reads everything quickly or the one who reads everything slowly isn’t really a good reader. Here are four things to remember about the speed of reading.
Knowing why you are reading will help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly. Some things should be read slowly from beginning to end. Examples are instructions for making or doing something. Math books, science books and grammar books are full of important information. You must read these things slowly to understand and remember every important idea.
Some things should be read quickly throughout, such as stories for enjoyment, letters from friends, and some news from newspapers.
In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast. You will need to read some pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas.
50. Which of the following should be read slowly according to the passage?
A. Three Pigs. B. Jiaxing Daily. C. Letters from friends. D. Directions for using iPhone 14.
51. Whether to read fast or slowly depends on ____.
A. our habits B. our feelings C. the time D. the reading materials
52. Which one can be the best title for the passage?
A. How to be a good reader
B. How to read quickly
C Reading slowly is better
D. Reading is a good hobby

C: “Christopher Boone.” That’s my name. But the date of the letter is after my mother’s death. This doesn’t make any sense! The letter reads, “Dear Christopher, ____46____ Though we’re far apart, the wet weather reminds me of the days when we sat by the window, listening to the rain together... ”
(Christopher rushed out with the letter in his hand. )

根据Scene1中Christopher看到死去的狗时的台词“Poor dog... there’s no breath at all”,以及他流泪的状态,能看出他此刻的心情是难过的;在Scene2中,邻居Mrs. Alexander告诉他“your mother is still alive”,Christopher立刻反驳“That can’t be true”,结合他说“ I don’t like surprising news. It makes me feel upset and nervous”,可知这个消息让他非常震惊。
a. Christopher 在花园发现死去的狗 Wellington(Scene 1 开头);e. Christopher 在笔记本上记录发现狗的时间(Scene 1 中 “He writes carefully in a notebook”);d.
根据“the wet weather reminds me of the days when we sat by the window, listening to the rain together”可知,这句话的核心是潮湿的天气和雨,因此空格处的句子需要和“雨天”相关。故选C。

C. Reading slowly is better
D. Reading is a good hobby
