M:You're a lifesaver!I was afraid I would lose all my work.Is it all right if I leave it here for a while?
W:No problem.I see you're studying history. Are you taking Mr.Fallon's class?I was in his European history
class last year.
M:That's our teacher,but we're studying African history.It's quite interesting.
W:I didn't know he was teaching that.I'll have to see if I can sign up for it next semester before I graduate.I

Text 10
W:The Ancient Cherokee Village in northeastern Oklahoma is an excellent place for a school field trip. The
village was built in 2012 to show how the Cherokee Indians used to live, according to stories from long ago.
As you walk through the village, you will see houses made from mud and wood, some small sports fields,
and two community buildings.Along the way,you will find tour guides explaining the ancient lifestyle there.
You can try your hand at stickball,a traditional game that may remind you of baseball. You can also see a
woman making food out of local nuts and plants. As you move to the center of the village, you will find a tour
guide making arrows. He will explain how the arrows have always been made. You may even be invited to a
shooting match using some of his bows and arrows.Although the Cherokee Indians who work here no longer
live in simple villages like this one,it is interesting to learn about the history of these people. After your tour
of the village,be sure to visit the museum or relax in the gift shop. After the village closes, you can even stay
for a special show in the evening,in which locals act out important events from Indian history.

Is it Good to Pursue Perfection?
I believe it's good to pursue perfection to some extent.
Once,I aimed for perfection when preparing for an English speech contest.I polished my script repeatedly,
practiced pronunciation, and adjusted my body language. As a result,I won first prize.
Perfectionism drives us to surpass ourselves, opening doors to extraordinary results. Also, the process of
striving for perfection helps cultivate crucial qualities like perseverance. However,we mustn't overdo it.Being
excessively focused on perfection may lead to burnout.
In conclusion,we should embrace the pursuit of perfection in a balanced way, using it to achieve greater
success.

Visionary architects design buildings which speak for themselves. From towering concrete
pillars to sculptural modernist domes(),the work of Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi defined
Indian architecture for the latter half of the 20th century.Known as B.V.Doshi,he was a
versatile modernist architect-he designed everything from accessible housing projects to the
Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore.Sadly, the great architect died on January 24,
2023,at the age of 95,leaving behind a fascinating legacy.
Born on August 26,1927,in Pune, southeast of Mumbai,Doshi grew up with his father
and grandfather,a furniture maker. As a child he came to appreciate how their house grew and

changed.In 1947,shortly before Indian independence,he began architecture school.However,
he never finished,a fact which he'd later point to in life as an advantage. He married his wife
Kamala Parikh in 1955.When she passed away,Doshi lived in a house he designed and named
for his beloved wife.后人t吴f还O
Doshi was influenced by the famous Swiss-French architect known as Le Corbusier.Doshi
studied with him in Paris and then returned to India to supervise the architect's work in
Ahmedabad. In 1956,Doshi founded his own firm called Vastushilpa. He traveled the world
lecturing at universities, worked with other famous architects, and even founded the Center
for Environmental Planning and Technology now CEPT University)focusing on
understanding,designing,planning,constructing and managing human habitats.
"We did not want to imitate someone else's approach,"he told the Louisiana Museum of
Modern Art in 2018."We wanted to find our own identity."He drew from his pride in Indian
culture to create a style distinct from Western designs."I think of my buildings as my friends,
my family,"he said."I have a conversation with them,and that's how I create niches and
staircases and openings and gardens...My buildings are not only pure and clear but designed
to anticipate changes."
Aside from his modern works,Doshi was devoted to creating works to benefit the poor.
He designed the Aranya Low Cost Housing Project in Indore. The photographer Iwan Baan,
who photographed some of Doshi's works, described the artist as "the most approachable
architect I know."Even very poor people in his public housing projects knew him, which is
exceptional.

A team from Newcastle University and Northumbria University in the UK has found that
the thin,root-like threads produced by many fungi (can potentially be used as a
biodegradable, wearable material that's also able to repair itself.
In their tests, the researchers focused on the Ganoderma lucidum fungus, producing a
skin from branching thin threads, which together weave into a structure called a mycelium(
)With a little more work, the fragile skins could serve as a substitute for leather,
satisfying environmental and fashion tastes.
"The results suggest that mycelium materials can survive in dry and unfavourable
environments, and self-repairing is possible with minimal intervention after a two-day
recovery period,"write the researchers in their published paper. However, the process used
to produce these materials tends to kill off the fungal spores()that help the organism
regenerate itself.
(五)·英语第4页(共8页)
A new approach involving a mix of mycelia, proteins, and other nutrients in a liquid
encouraged the growth of a skin. The results are currently too thin and delicate to be turned
into a jacket. However, the researchers are confident that it's possible that future innovations
could turn it into a tougher skin, possibly by combining layers or plasticizing in glycerol.
Crucially, the production process didn't kill off the fungal spores.Tests on the material
showed that it was indeed able to replace holes made in it.The material was as strong as
before, though it was still possible to see where the holes had been.
"Due to their functional properties, the ability of this regenerative mycelium material to
heal micro and macro defects opens interesting future prospects for unique product applications
in leather-goods replacements such as furniture,automotive seals,and fashion wear,"write
the researchers.
There's a long way to go here before you'll be wearing clothes made out of fungus. The
growing and healing processes take several days to happen at the moment for example,
something which could be sped up over time.
28.What did the team find in their tests?
A.An alternative to fungal spores.
B.Thin threads shaped like roots.
C.Many different fungi.
D.Mycelium materials with self-healing function.
29.What is mainly presented in paragraph 3?
A.The recovery period of fungal spores.
B.Crises of mycelium materials'survival.
C.Imperfection in producing mycelium materials.
D.The method of intervening organisms'regeneration.
30.What can we learn about the new approach?
A.It speeds up the creation of mycelia.
B.It keeps fungal spores from destruction.
C.It makes the holes in materials invisible.
D.It combines the liquid with layers of skin.
31.What is the prospect of mycelium-based materials?
A.A flash in the pan.
B.Promising but challenging.
C.Inspiring but unachievable
D.A growth and decline cycle

Chinese scientists have identified a new protein that restricts HIV infection,a discovery
that could pave the way for the development of new drugs against the virus. The protein,P-
selection glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1),which exists in human cells, can inhibit (the
process by which HIV reproduces, according to research published in the science journal
Nature Microbiology this month.
However, the study also showed that PSGL-1 can be negatively affected by Vpu-an
accessory (protein of HIV-which can neutralize the ability of PSGL-1 to resist HIV.
Further research is under way to develop a drug that can inhibit the HIV protein so that
PSGL-1 can restrict HIV,according to Tan Xu,a researcher at Tsinghua University's School
of Pharmaceutical Sciences,a leading author of the study.
Several other proteins in human cells that could resist HIV have been discovered over the
past 10 years, but the virus can also evade (them.PSGL-1 shows particular promise in
that it can inhibit HIV in multiple ways-especially by blocking the infectiousness of virus
offspring,Tan said.
"We are starting to research into small molecule (compounds in the hope of finding
one that can restore PSGL-1's anti-HIV function. In this way,we can develop a very effective
antiviral drug for people with HIV/AIDS,he said.Tan said it will require at least three to
five years for the research to reach the preclinical stage, and more time after that before a
clinical trial is possible. The research was conducted by researchers at Tsinghua University in
Beijing,Fudan University in Shanghai and George Mason University in the United States.
(五)·英语第5页(共8页)
Existing treatment methods for people with HIV/AIDS,which mostly rely on a
combination of different drugs, can prevent the disease from progressing but cannot cure it,
and long-term use of drugs can result in drug resistance.
An estimated 37 million people in the world live with HIV,according to the Joint United
Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.The study provides new leads to developing antiviral
drugs,Tsinghua University said in a statement.
32.What can we learn about PSGL-1 from the passage?
A.Both the protein PSGL-1 and the protein Vpu are HIV proteins.
B.PSGL-1 can restrict the function of the protein Vpu.
C.PSGL-1's molecule compounds have been identified.
D.The protein PSGL-1 functions better than others in resisting HIV.
33.What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?
A.The existing treatment for AIDS are far from perfect.
B.It will be a decade before the antiviral drugs is put on the market.
C.American scientists played a leading role in the research.
D.HIV/AIDS will no longer be a deadly problem owing to the new discovery.
34.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.There is a long way to go before curing AIDS.
B.More people are faced with the threat of HIV.
C.Chinese scientists are leading the way in curing AIDS.
D.A new protein to resist HIV was confirmed by scientists.
35.Where is this text most likely from?
A.A guidebook.B.A fiction.
C.A magazine.
D.A brochure.

A company's culture is like an ecosystem involving a complex network, which includes
employees,the technology,and systems,etc with which we need to work.Just like that,we
have variations of individual's personalities,as business culture can vary from company to
company.36 Cultural fit is basically just about pairing people with business culture.
A culturally fitting employee is someone who fits smoothly within the company's
organizational culture:the value systems, leadership structure, and practices of an
organization.Everything from the way an employee interacts to their communication behaviors
all shapes the culture of an organization.37 This is the reason why the concept of cultural
fit is so widespread today.
The history of cultural fit goes back to the 1980s.According to the article,Guess Who
Doesn't Fit In at Work by researcher Lauren Rivera,"The original idea was that if companies
hired individuals whose personalities and values (and not just their skills)were in line with an
organization's strategy, workers would feel more attached to their jobs, work harder and stay
longer."38 With the evolving research on this topic in academia, companies also have
begun to draw their own interpretations and styles of hiring.
39 As an employer, you would want to hire someone who shares the company's
goals,and priorities.Therefore,the stakes (of finding a cultural fit are pretty high.If a
company doesn't have a great cultural fit with its employees,it will likely have trouble with
leadership and disagreements within the organization about its values.40
A.Of course, cultural fit is not absolute but relative.
B.It may break an organization's efficiency,at its worst.
C.Cultural fit is beneficial for both employees and employers.
D.Many firms felt a strong connection with the ideas in this article.
E.An immoral person can untie what keeps enterprise culture united.
F.That is why some people fit into one particular working environment.
G.In 2007,a collection of studies on cultural fit in the workplace came out.

raised one child. But shortly before her husband died, their daughter had moved to Australia.
Now Rose was alone in Canada.Traveling to see her child was impossible as the trip was
incredibly expensive. To save up for a visit to Sydney,Australia,Rose took a job as a window
cleaner in a big apartment building.
Getting the job in the first place had been difficult because no one seemed willing to give a
physically demanding job to a woman of her age;but Rose had managed to convince the
building's manager to give her a chance. It was a challenging job for her,but Rose wiped each
window like it was a work of art. What's more, she went above and beyond and always helped
out with the residents. What she earned went straight into her savings account.but the money
was piling up painfully slowly.Rose's excellent work and warm heart did not go unnoticed by
