“Someone once asked me, ‘What's the tool you would want to give any student?’ And I said, ‘A mask and snorkel (潜水通气管) set,’” the ocean biologist Thys says in a video. And Thys explains, “About seventy-one percent of the Earth is the ocean. It's worth a view.”
Thys has devoted her career to seeing the ocean, and to helping others watch the great diversity of the underwater world.A big part of what motivates her work is the chance to let people develop a sense of respect for the grandness of the ocean, and to get people to participate in efforts to protect endangered ocean ecosystems.
Since studying ocean biology, Thys has focused her research on how sea animals live. One animal she particularly studies is the ocean sunfish.“It's so different from any other fish,” says Thys.“It looks like a mistake.Where does the tail go?” Thys adds.“The sunfish provides an entry point to understanding more about the behavior of creatures in the ocean, and about how environmental changes impact underwater ecosystems.”
Thys's work also takes her above ground, where she's looking at ways to create new connections between human populations and natural environments to help address social and environmental challenges. For instance, she's working on nature's effects on mental well-being.
Thys's passion for her work is evident in every lecture, video, and public appearance she makes.Using the media, Thys encourages people to learn about the ocean and love it.Due to many ocean research projects and activities from the media, Thys is up to her neck in work every day.She could hardly spare plenty of time for a good rest.Thys's devotion to her work as an ocean scientist and ecological warrior is infectious. She's a role model and an inspiring guide to ocean life.

Space Exploration Events You Don't Want to Miss
Space exploration has always fascinated humanity, and now, there are some amazing events on the horizon. Here are three space-related happenings that are worth your attention.
The Mars Rover Expedition
The latest Mars rover mission, led by a joint team of international scientists, is set to launch next month. This rover is equipped with state -of-the-art technology. It will search for signs of past or present microbial life, study the planet's climate and geology, and collect samples that could be brought back to Earth in future missions. The launch will be broadcast live on major science channels, and there will also be an online Q&A session with the scientists involved after the launch.
Space Telescope Upgrade
The well-known space telescope, which has been providing us with breathtaking images of distant galaxies for decades, is getting an upgrade. Scientists will install new, more sensitive instruments that will allow the telescope to detect fainter objects and study them in greater detail. A virtual tour of the upgrade process will be available on the official website of the space observatory. This upgrade is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the early universe and the formation of stars and galaxies.
International Space Station Open House
For the first time ever, the International Space Station (ISS) is hosting an open-house event. Although it's a virtual one, it's still a great opportunity for space enthusiasts. Astronauts on board the ISS will give live tours of the station, showing the living quarters, the laboratories where various scientific experiments are conducted, and the observation decks. They will also answer questions from the public about life in space, the challenges of conducting research in zero-gravity, and the future of space exploration. The open- house will be streamed on multiple platforms, making it accessible to people all over the world.

When Sarah Lee was a child, she loved to watch the birds in her backyard and wonder how they could fly so effortlessly. As she grew older, Sarah became interested in the science behind flight and decided to study aerospace engineering in college.
After graduation, Sarah began working for a company that designed airplanes. However, she soon realized that the traditional methods of airplane design were not always efficient or sustainable. She began to wonder if there was a way to design airplanes that mimicked the natural world.
Sarah started to study birds and insects, observing how they were able to fly with such grace and efficiency. She asked questions like: How do birds adjust their wings to different wind conditions? How do insects use their wings to hover in place?
With this knowledge, Sarah began to design airplanes that incorporated biomimicry, or the imitation of nature. She created wings that could adjust their shape based on wind conditions, just like a bird's wings. She also designed planes that could hover in place, like a dragonfly.
Sarah's designs were a hit. Her company began to produce airplanes that were more efficient and sustainable than ever before. They used less fuel and emitted fewer pollutants into the air.
Sarah now travels around the world, giving talks on the benefits of biomimicry in engineering. “Nature has been solving problems for millions of years,” she says. “We can learn a lot from the natural world if we just take the time to observe and ask questions.”

The far side of the moon has been a point of fascination for scientists since they first peered at it in black and white images captured in 1959 — and realized how different it was from the side facing Earth. The far side appeared to show a record of impact — covered in craters (坑) of different sizes and ages.
Decades later, and some five years since the Chang'e-4 mission made China the first and only country to complete a soft landing on the far side, scientists both from China and around the world have high hopes for the information that can be collected from the samples.
“It's a gold mine,” said James Head, a professor of planetary geosciences at Brown University, who together with European scientists, collaborated with Chinese scientists analyzing samples from the Chang'e-5 mission that returned near-side samples. “International scientists are totally excited about the mission,” he said.
Experts say analysis of the composition and physical properties of the samples could help advance efforts to learn how to use resources on the moon for future lunar and space exploration. “The Chang'e-6 mission is focused on answering specific scientific questions, but the lunar soils collected from the mission can also support future resource utilization,” said Yuqi Qian, a planetary geologist.
Lunar soil could be used for 3-D printing to produce bricks for construction of research bases on the moon, while some scientists were already working on finding more economical and practical technologies to extract gases like Helium-3, oxygen and hydrogen from the soil, which could support further lunar exploration, he said.
Once they receive the samples, Chinese scientists are expected to share data and carry out joint research with international partners, before Beijing later opens the samples for access by international teams, according to statements from CNSA officials.

A small device no bigger than a toaster has generated oxygen on the surface of Mars, bringing the chances of surviving on the red planet a step closer.
The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, better known as MOXIE,has been generating oxygen from the atmosphere on Mars, as part of NASA's Perseverance rover mission.
MOXIE produced breathable oxygen in seven hour-long tests conducted in various weather and atmosphere conditions since landing.During each test, the device produced six grams of oxygen, about the same as a small tree and enough to sustain an astronaut for 15 minutes. It's also found that even in extreme temperatures and after a Martian dust storm, MOXIE continued to produce high-purity oxygen.
“This is the first demonstration of actually using resources on the surface of another planet and transforming them chemically into something that would be useful for a human mission,” said Jeff Hoffman, a retired astronaut and professor at MIT.
NASA and the MIT team are planning to build a bigger version of MOXIE, as they hope advanced models will produce enough oxygen to support a crewed mission to Mars.“We have to bring a lot of stuff from Earth to support a human mission, but oxygen is a big problem. If you can make it there, go for it and you're way ahead of the game,” Hoffman said.
The device uses pumps that absorb in carbon dioxide which is heated to 800 ℃ and processed to separate the carbon and oxygen.Carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) is emitted as waste while the pure oxygen is left behind.
Expanding the device to support a human mission to Mars presents challenges. It is needed to run continuously for 400 days, a leap from the one -hour tests and its inner temperature should be controlled stably.MOXIE has proved to endure the extreme conditions on Mars, however, and the team plans to assess the machine's limits in the coming months when atmosphere is thick and carbon dioxide levels are high. They say they just want to set everything as high as they dare and make as much oxygen as they can.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Several years after humans successfully put their first object into space, it's much easier to launch a satellite. But space will be a lot messier once we're up there. 16 There are around 5,000 satellites in orbit with fewer than half actually working. When a satellite stops functioning, it keeps orbiting at very high speeds, making a great threat for the useful ones.
So space sustainability has become a big concern. 17 One suggested solution is to refuel the dead satellites and bring them back to life.Another concept is to use a robot with four arms to catch a dead satellite before pulling it into the atmosphere to burn it up.
18 Operating a robot from hundreds of miles away is tough. And the world hasn't yet reached a consensus (共识) on why we should clear the space junk and there are no real rules that govern how we work out there.
First, why should we keep things clean in orbit? We use satellites to check the weather, find our way around, and for financial purposes.Space data gives us not just beautiful pictures of the earth, but also information about climate change, natural disasters and other things that can help humans with earthbound challenges. 19
Then how can we humans think as one big community? Governments should make powerful regulations.Companies ought to engage in shared practices and scientists are expected to think up practical methods. 20 Only in this way can we keep those orbital highways open for the next generation and beyond before they are deadly blocked by space junk.
A.They provide services closely related to our life.
B.This is hard both technically and politically, though.
C.Anyway, we should quicken the pace of clearing up.
D.Space is getting increasingly crowded and dangerous.
E.So we depend largely on space and it needs to be tidied up.
F.Scientists are struggling for strategies to tackle the problem.

参考范文:
Dear Jim,
I am glad to share with you more details about my passion for moon exploration.
In Chinese culture, as opposed to the masculinity of the sun, the moon is often compared to a quiet and elegant lady. Also, it reminds people of their family and friends far away. People feel reassured knowing that they are watching the same moon as though the moon could serve as their messenger.
Human beings have never stopped exploring this closest neighbor. I believe it is of great significance. And I think moon exploration shows an important human trait, that is, curiosity about the unknown, which is the driving force that has brought our species this far.
I hope you find what I've mentioned above interesting and reasonable. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Marcus was really excited to watch a solar eclipse (日食) in Bloomfield on a sunny Saturday afternoon. He set up the telescope he'd borrowed from his teacher on an open area near the baseball field, where the school baseball team was practicing. Marcus didn't like baseball; he was more interested in the stars. A solar eclipse was a special event, and he didn't want to miss it.
While the baseball team practiced, Marcus paid no attention to them. As he looked through his telescope at the sun, the moon started covering it, creating a cool crescent shape (月牙形). Marcus was amazed by it. He wished he could share this moment with someone who loved it as much as he did.
Then, the baseball coach, Bernardi, announced over the loud speaker that the baseball game was put off for 30 minutes because of the solar eclipse. Coach Bernardi's announcement brought Marcus back to reality. He realized he was alone near the baseball field, holding his telescope. He had been so into the eclipse that he didn't notice a baseball flying toward him. It hit the telescope and broke the lens (镜片).
Marcus was angry, and he shouted, wondering who had thrown the baseball at him. He picked up the ball and headed toward the baseball field. He was worried about telling his teacher, Mr Baker, about the broken telescope. Sure, it wasn't his fault, but he had positioned the telescope near the baseball field, and he still felt he should take responsibility.
As Marcus stepped onto the baseball field, he realized some fans and players were watching the eclipse. Each person was trying to get a chance to look through the telescopes that some fans had brought to watch the eclipse. Marcus noticed a boy running toward him. “I'm really sorry about what happened with your telescope. I didn't mean to break it. I should have been more careful,” said the boy, with a sincere expression.
注意:1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Marcus understood that it was just an accident.
After a while, it was Marcus’s turn to look through the telescope.
参考范文:
Marcus understood that it was just an accident. He appreciated the boy's honesty and forgave him immediately. Sensing Marcus's disappointment, the boy offered to share his own telescope with Marcus, which he had brought to watch the eclipse as well. Grateful for the boy's kindness, Marcus accepted the offer, and together they marveled at the wonder unfolding above them. The eclipse was a shared experience, turning a moment of frustration into a bonding opportunity.
After a while, it was Marcus's turn to look through the telescope. As he peered through the lens, the damaged lens of his own telescope was momentarily forgotten. The crescent sun was a breathtaking sight. Marcus felt a rush of excitement, realizing that the beauty of the universe could bring people together in unexpected ways. He turned to the boy and thanked him again. Together, they continued to observe the eclipse. As the moon moved past the sun and daylight returned, Marcus left the baseball field with a newfound appreciation for the unexpected connections life could offer, and a lesson learned about taking responsibility and turning a negative situation into a positive one.

Do you know how the sounds of dinosaur roars in Jurassic Park are produced? A team of sound experts work behind the scenes to make sure a movie sounds as good as it looks. Take a look at how these sound experts do their jobs.
Production Sound Mixers
Production sound mixers are in charge of recording all dialogues and effects on set. These recordings are the basis for the rest of the sound in the film.
Sound Designers
Sound designers work with the director to decide on the overall feel of a film's sound. This includes creating sounds that don't exist in the real world. Sounds such as monster roars and spaceship zooms are made by combining several real sounds and sometimes changing the speed or pitch.
Foley Artists
Foley artists work in recording studios filled with thousands of props from flooring and fabric samples to shoes and bubble wrap. They use the props to recreate sounds like rustling leaves, creaking doors, and footsteps. On set, microphones don't always pick up these everyday sounds. Film locations can also have unavoidable (不可避免的) background noise. So foley artists recreate and add the sounds to the film later.
Composers
The composer writes the background music or score for a film. Before writing the score, the composer meets with the director and other members of the filmmaking team to decide how and where to use music. Each choice affects the movie watcher's emotions.

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked someone to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters' techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you've applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”

Hummingbirds are small birds but they're the Olympic gymnasts of the flying world. They have strongly muscled bodies and rather long wings. They fly around at remarkable speeds and fly in all directions, including backward and upside down.
To achieve such agility (敏捷), hummingbirds use distinct modes of visual processing to control different types of flight. Their brains can make rapid transitions from visual signals to motor outputs. They take in lots of complicated visual information and make a flight plan out of that. Recently, the researchers have uncovered a unique mode that guides hummingbirds' speed when they are flying forward.
The findings come from an experiment of more than 3,500 hummingbird flights inside a 12-foot-long tunnel with a branch at one end and a feeder at the other. Moving light patterns cast on the tunnel walls influence how the hummingbirds see things while flying.
The researchers expected that if the hummingbirds were using visual clues to control their forward flight speed, they would see the birds speed or slow with lights cast on the side walls. But instead, it seemed that they had their own way of knowing how fast to go for forward flight. When moving up or down, however, the birds based their motor commands on the cast light patterns they saw.
This special ability helps hummingbirds fly safely and quickly. This knowledge could be useful for improving drone (无人机) technology, helping engineers develop better ways for drones to predict and respond to changes in their surroundings. “If we can develop a mathematical model for this visual processing, it could be very useful for drones.” says Bo Cheng, a mechanical engineer, at Pennsylvania State University.

When it comes to lowering blood pressure, studies have typically shown that aerobic (有氧的) exercises are best. Recent research suggests another type of physical activity is worth including as an effective tool to prevent and treat high blood pressure.
Exercises that engage muscles without movement, such as wall squats and planks, may be best for lowering blood pressure, according to a large study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
This type of training is known as isometric exercise, according to the Mayo Clinic. Isometric muscle action happens when muscles contract but do not visibly change length, and the joints involved don't move, facilitating stability of the body. Isometric exercises can be done with weights or without, just relying on the body's own weight.
“These findings provide a comprehensive data-driven framework to support the development of new exercise guideline recommendations for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure,” said study co-author Dr.Jamie O'Driscoll in a news release.
The researchers looked into randomized controlled trials that had reported the effects of exercise interventions, lasting two or more weeks, on blood pressure between 1990 and February 2023. From a review of 270 trials with 15,827 participants, the researchers found that among HIIT (high intensity interval training), isometric exercise, aerobic exercise, dynamic resistance training and a combination of the latter two, isometric exercise led to the greatest reductions in blood pressure.
It's also important to note that there are other lifestyle changes as well as exercise that can benefit your blood pressure. These include keeping to a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, cutting down on salt, not drinking too much alcohol and ensuring that you continue to take any prescribed medication.
More research is needed to determine exactly why isometric exercise might be better for lowering blood pressure than other types of training, the authors said.

Four Tips to Promote Your Self-Confidence
The following tips might help promote your self-confidence, so you can feel more comfortable with whom you are.
16 Developing positive thoughts can serve as a good foundation, but the people around you can have a significant influence on your self-confidence as well. Consider surrounding yourself with people who build you up and encourage you to follow what you want in life.
Set goals for yourself. You don't have to set large goals: you might begin with small goals that you can easily achieve. For example, you might set a goal to take a walk every day after work. It may be helpful to keep a list of the accomplishments that have made you feel proud. 17
Think about what makes you feel attractive. It can be easy to fall into the trap of looking for imperfections in ourselves, both inside and outside. 18 You might begin with qualities that make you a good friend, parent or coworker. You can also find ways to bring out your natural beauty by making small changes. 19 For example, you might try a new hairstyle, buy an article of clothing that you like, etc.
Do something brave once a week. It can be frightening to put ourselves out there, but sometimes the risk can be worth the reward. Taking risks doesn't necessarily mean going bungee jumping or mountain climbing. 20 Perhaps you might talk to that person you're interested in. Even if it doesn't turn out the way you want it to, just taking the leap shows self-confidence and may make you feel proud of yourself.
A.Make influences on others.
B.Surround yourself with positivity.
C.Achieving large goals is one way to feel confident.
D.You can simply do something to step out of your comfort zone.
E.Instead, you might make a list of things that make you attractive.
F.You can use this list as motivation to get you to achieve your bigger goals.
G.Sometimes, even the simplest change can make us feel good about ourselves.
