Passage 1 .
话题:“天眼之父” 南仁东
难度:★★★★☆ 建议用时:9分钟
Born in 1945, Nan Rendong was the top scorer
of science in the college entrance exam(高考) in his native
Jilin Province when entering Tsinghua University in 1963.
3
In the early 1990s, a great idea entered Nan’s mind:he
wanted to build a radio telescope 500 meters across. At that
time, the biggest one in China was less than 30 meters across.
To realize his dream, Nan gave up a well-paid job at one of
the world’s top scientific research centers and returned to China
in 1994 to lead the FAST project.
The first challenge Nan and his team faced was finding a
suitable location—a problem that took the scientist 12 years to
solve. Finally, when Nan discovered a large crater (洼坑)
hidden in Guizhou Province, he knew he had found what he
was looking for.
The cable-net construction (索网结构建设) of the
telescope was another challenge thrown at Nan. When it came
to problem-solving, Nan and his team had nothing to refer to
and nowhere to ask for help.“During every failure, Nan was
there, trying to find out a solution,” said Jiang Peng, Nan’s
helper.“Most of the scientists working on the FAST project just
do well in their own fields. But Nan knew everything. This
project was made for him.”
After more than twenty years of development, the project
was successfully completed, the largest and most sensitive
(灵敏的) radio telescope in the world, opened in 2016.
FAST is able to receive signals from 10 billion light years
away, and with it, Nan hoped to discover the origins of the
universe and life.“The reason humans evolved (进化) from
lower forms of life to what we are now is because we’ve
always kept the spirit of exploring the unknown,” Nan said.
Sadly, FAST, also known as the China Sky Eye, had just started
to “watch” the universe, while the founding father of the project
closed his eyes forever.#1.8

Passage 5
话题:椰子的多种用途和价值
难度:★★★★☆ 建议用时:7分钟
Amazing Coconut:More Than a Fruit
45
You can put a stamp on it, you can write an address on it,
and you can send it through the mail. No, it’s not a package.
It’s the amazing coconut (椰子)! The coconut is different
from most other fruits because every part of it is useful. People
have been using coconuts in many different ways. Here are
some of them.
One exciting use of the coconut is as a kind of energy.
Scientists are working on using coconuts for energy because
46
they are cheap and clean. Coconut oil has already been made
into fuel (燃料).It can power cars, trucks, ships and many
more.
Students at Baylor University find that coconut husks
(外壳) can take in water very well. So mixing coconut husks
with dry soil (土壤) helps the soil to hold onto more of the
water. The students also find that coconut husks can take the
place of plastic in some cases. If this is possible, it will help
people use less plastic.
The husk of the coconut is a perfect package. It protects
the coconut from harm. That’s why some countries allow people
to send the coconut without any packaging. Each year, tourists
post about 3,000 of these “coconut postcards”.
Coconuts grow naturally in over 80 countries of the world.
They require only sun and proper rain. No special care is
needed. Every year, more than 61 million tons of coconuts are
produced. It is not surprising, then, that people want to find so
many uses for the coconut.#2.6

Passage 6
话题:动物们的特殊能力
难度:★★★☆☆ 建议用时:7分钟
Some animals can easily find their way home after a long
journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that
they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps
to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and
55
bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they
have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone
walking six kilometers through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can
smell even a single drop of water from their home in a large
sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able
to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the Earth’s magnetic field
(磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a
certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and
then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a
mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have
difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human
activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction,
but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all
night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some
lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a
lot to animals.#1.1.5

Passage 7
话题:无人机的广泛应用
难度:★★★★☆ 建议用时:8分钟
At the Badaling Great Wall in Beijing, it
used to take a 50-minute walk to get food and
water. Now, people can order on their phones, and drones
(无人机) carry these things in just a few minutes. These
drones also help by taking away garbage from tourists on their
65
way back. This is just one example of how drones are widely
used in China.
According to China Daily, by June 2025, over 1.87 million
drones in China had received permission to operate. The need
for professional drone pilots is growing. However, only about
225,000 people have the necessary licenses to fly them. This
means there is a need of almost 1 million licensed drone pilots
in the country.
“Since drones are used in many areas like farming, video
filming, and environmental protection, drone pilots can work in
various industries. The pay is also good. Some pilots get around
30,000 yuan per month,” China Daily reported. That’s why
more people are trained to get drone licenses.
In Hunan Province, a business offering such training has
seen 400 to 500 people graduate so far this year. Before, there
were only about 200 each year. To get a drone-flying license
for distances under 500 meters, people need to take 44 hours of
training. For longer distances, 56 hours are required.
Dong Jiamin, head of Xiaoxiang Yongxiang, said, “I believe
drones are the future.” The excitement around drones is linked

Passage 8
话题:无糖食品和饮料的风险
难度:★★★★☆ 建议用时:8分钟
Sugar-free cookies, sugar-free candy, diet soda… Do these
seem like healthier choices? Since sugar became a no-no in the
nutrition (营养) and fitness world, sugar-free food and drinks
have acted as replacements for once-beloved sweet drinks and
snacks. Claiming (声称) to be ZERO sugar means they are
75
healthier, better for diabetics (糖尿病患者), and help you
slim down, right?
▲ In fact, they are worse.
When a product is labeled “sugar-free”, it means that
artificial sweeteners (人工甜味剂) are used instead of real
sugar. The problem is that they do not come from natural
sources and can cause you more harm than good. Actually, most
artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than sugar, even 200—
600 times sweeter, so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why
many businesses market sugar-free replacements as “low-calorie”
or “no-calorie”.
But some of these sugar-free replacements still include
sugar and the chemicals your body often does not know how to
process. It also means that you get no nutritional value from
consuming them. What’s worse, when you eat this kind of
sweet food, your body continues to want it and even though
your body cannot metabolize (新陈代谢) these sugar-free
replacements, your brain does not know the difference either. In
turn, sugar-free replacements can lead to weight gain and Type-2
diabetes.
Similarly, artificial sweeteners also hurt your gut’s ability to
break down sugar, which affects everything you eat. In other
